WHAT IS PANCHAKARMA? Is Panchakarma Safe for Busy Women Over 35? #ayurveda

In this video Salila Sukumaran, a generational Ayurveda and yoga practitioner, addresses the common question among women over 35: Is Panchakarma safe and practical for them? She begins by framing Panchakarma as a root‑cause detox that fixes the underlying "leak" of chronic health issues that persist despite allopathic treatment. She explains the five core Ayurvedic therapies—Vamana (therapeutic vomiting), Virechana (purgation), Vasti (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal oiling), and Rakta Mokshana (blood purification)—and emphasizes that her approach tailors these actions rather than applying them rigidly. The video outlines age‑related dosha shifts, noting that women 35‑55 often experience rising Vata leading to instability, hormonal irregularities, and fatigue, which Panchakarma can ground and balance. Safety is highlighted through a checklist: contraindications such as pregnancy, menstruation, underweight, emotional instability, and the necessity of an authentic, experienced practitioner. Proper preparation (Purva Karma) with oil massages, steam, yoga, and supportive herbs is described as essential. Misconceptions are debunked, clarifying that Panchakarma is not an exhausting purge but a nourishing, gentle process that can fit into a busy lifestyle with remote guidance and flexible scheduling. Real‑world examples of professionals who completed Panchakarma while maintaining work and travel commitments illustrate practicality. The video concludes with a call to action for a personalized, supervised Panchakarma consultation, positioning the therapy as a sacred reset that revitalizes digestion, skin, hormones, and overall vitality for women over 35.

You probably heard about Panchakarma, the deep Ayurvedic detox treatment that promises radiant skin, better digestion, mental clarity, hormonal balance, and renewed energy. But if you're a woman over 35 and juggling work, home, health, you might wonder, is Panchakarma really safe for me? And even more, is it practical in my life? Hi everybody, my name is Salila Sukumaran. Hi, I am a generational Ayurveda and yoga practitioner based in sunny California. In this video, I'm answering a question I get all the time from clients around the world: Is Panchakarma the right choice for me at this stage in my life? Let's dive in. In this video, I am going to help you understand Panchakarma. But why do we need to know about Panchakarma? Because in today's world, If you have health issues that keep coming back even after you have taken medicines, Western or allopathic, then Panchakarma is the right answer for you. Imagine you've come home and you see that in your kitchen the sink is overflowing. What do you do? Do you start to mop the floor without first checking where the leak is coming from? You look for the leak, right? That sounds sensible. Right? But in today's world, the medicines that are given to us is a lot like mopping the floor without first fixing the source of the leak. Ayurveda Panchakarma is how we fix the root cause, the source of the leak. If the leak is not fixed for months, then what would happen? The leakage would lead to mold, damage the floor, walls, the cabinets of the kitchen, and our kitchen would become unsafe to use for cooking. Similarly, when the cause of energy imbalance is not fixed, our body becomes a difficult place to sustain life. It becomes home for pathogens, parasites, and our tissues start breaking down. We experience recurrent acne, frequent constipation, heartburn, brain fog, diarrhea, hair fall, disturbed sleep, and PMS. And then this starts to change into hormonal imbalance, infertility and cardiovascular issues, diabetes, the list goes on. Now let's get to know the powerful Panchakarma which helps fix all these health concerns in a few weeks. Panchakarma is one of the most powerful detoxification protocols found in any medical system worldwide, and I can say this with confidence because I have done this for the last 10 years, and as a practitioner living in the Bay Area, California, I have studied from traditional Chinese medicine and Korean herbal healers as well. Each medicine system has its own strong point, and panchakarma cleansing is undoubtedly Ayurveda's biggest strength and a gift to the world. The term pancha means 5 and karma means actions. These are 5 therapeutic procedures used to cleanse the body of deep-rooted toxins or ama. These 5 karmas include vamana, which is therapeutic vomiting to eliminate excess kapha, the sticky ama toxin we talk about. Virechana, purgation therapy to cleanse excess pitta or imbalanced fire from the alimentary canal. Vasti is medicated enemas, considered the king of all treatments for vata-related issues from the colon region. Nasya, which is nasal oiling therapy to clear toxins from the head and the sinuses. Rakta Mokshana is purification of the blood. This is useful in skin disorders that keep coming back. Now the way I do Panchakarma is not a rigid 5-step program. It's tailored, gentle, and focused on restoring balance using what is most appropriate for the client. Rather than going through each step one after the other. Women over 35 often find themselves in a whirlwind of responsibilities— career, family, aging parents, maybe even early onset of perimenopause— and your body begins to whisper that something needs attention. What I commonly see among women in this age group is sluggish digestion, bloating, hormonal irregularities, hot flashes, mood swings, trouble sleeping, chronic fatigue, brain fog, or emotional dullness. You will be surprised to know that Ayurveda considers that up to 70 years is a Pitta dominant phase of action in our life, activity, and a normal adult life enjoying the pursuit of a meaningful purpose. Ayurveda considers 55+ to be the phase when Vata begins to tip the balance and to dominate the body. However, due to modern lifestyle, we are now seeing young people, even as young as 30, showing signs of higher Vata or wear and tear due to old age. Vata energy governs movement and change, and without grounding This energy creates instability in the body tissues. Panchakarma helps to ground that excess Vata and calm the nervous system and support deep tissue nourishment. Panchakarma improves the Agni, the digestive fire we spoke about before, which is responsible for making sure all our tissues are strong and healthy. Panchakarma also balances the earth element, kapha, helping us lose weight. Some of my clients drop up to 14 pounds in a matter of weeks. They may have tried diet and high-intensity training and even with celebrity nutritionists and physicians, but when they apply Ayurveda therapies in the correct manner, the weight just sheds by itself. You might wonder, what does a panchakarma promise? Let's look at the shloka our ancient sages have mentioned about rejuvenative treatment like panchakarma. Dheergam aayush smriti meedham aarogyam, tarunam vayaha dehendriya balam kantim, naro vindet rasayanat. This means a long life with a lot of joy and happiness, powerful memory to remember important information, to ace exams, to ace presentations, become a good communicator. Intelligence to know good from bad, right from wrong. Health to live and enjoy without fear of falling sick. Youth to try new experiences where age is just a number. Strength of body and senses so you can dance, swim, drive well into your golden years. Great complexion so you look beautiful and can save cash on expensive treatments and procedures. And all this a person gains by having rejuvenative treatments like a Panchakarma. So if you're nodding a yes, yes, yes to everything that I'm sharing, hit the like button and subscribe. This will keep me motivated to bring even more amazing content for you. Now let's get into the core question: is Panchakarma safe? The short answer is Yes, but here's the real explanation. It's safe when it's done properly, under supervision, at the right time. Let's discuss some of the key factors that determine safety of a panchakarma. Number 1 is your current state of health. Panchakarma isn't suitable for everyone. If you're pregnant, you're menstruating, you're underweight, or emotionally unstable, it's not the right time. I recently had a client who was advised not to pursue panchakarma and focus on adding more meditative practices. Unfortunately, she took it as a challenge. When Vata is high, we are unstable. We are not able to withstand even a drastic positive shift. The authenticity of the practitioner. When you do a cleanse with with me, I bring my decade-old expertise working with clients worldwide. If you're doing a panchakarma at a center, it should be supervised by an expert Ayurvedic doctor. It should not be a spa offering detox with clever marketing tactics, which unfortunately happens in a lot of cases. Customization. A real panchakarma program is never a one-size-fits-all All the therapies, diet, herbs are all based on your dosha, your health goals, and your readiness. It is highly personalized. Proper preparation. Purva karmas should prepare the body to expel ama or endogenous toxins. This includes snehana, internal and external odiation, swedana, steam therapy, yoga, nasya, nasal medication, meditation, supportive herbs to help you digest the ama, to prepare your body for the actual cleansing once it starts. Think of panchakarma as seriously as a medical therapy-grade detox, but done with oils, herbs, and a whole lot of love. If you wouldn't do surgery without prep and recovery, you shouldn't do panchakarma that way either. Now let's talk about the misconceptions about Panchakarma. This is very essential. One of the biggest misconceptions is that Panchakarma is all about flushing things out, that it is intense, it is exhausting, or even scary. That's only true when it's done incorrectly. In truth, Panchakarma is deeply nourishing. Most of your days will involve rest, warm oil treatment, simple meals, gentle yoga. And there is a phase of elimination, no doubt, but it's a very small part of a much larger process. Another question I commonly get is, can busy women do panchakarma? Is it practical? And the answer is absolutely yes, but it requires intention and planning. Some of my clients who work with me remotely, taking my guidance as they cleanse and they purge, they attend reunions, they go on work trips. One even went for a wedding, and they hold down demanding career roles like physicians, surgeons, rocket scientists. What matters is not the duration but the depth of presence and the personalization. So if you're ready to explore a panchakarma cleanse in a safe, guided, and feminine way, click the link in the description below to start a consultation. Now let's go deeper into the situations where panchakarma should be avoided or carefully postponed, not because it's not effective, but because your body or mind may not be in a place to fully receive this. One is during pregnancy or immediately postpartum. Pregnancy is a sacred time of building, not cleansing. The body is in creation mode, and panchakarma is too intense for this delicate window. Similarly, after childbirth, the body needs nourishing, recovery, not detoxification. Wait for at least 6 months postpartum. 2 is during menstruation. Your menstrual cycle is your body's natural monthly cleanse. It's your natural panchakarma. During panchakarma, cleaning your body interrupts this process and can destabilize the hormones. Always schedule around your cycle, ideally starting panchakarma at least 3 to 4 days after menstruation ends. Ayurveda physicians even believe women live longer for this reason. Now, if you're emotionally fragile or have any trauma, panchakarma will stir not just the physical toxins but also your emotional ones. If you're moving through grief, depression, anxiety, or recent trauma, this may not be the time to detox. Instead, we begin with emotional nourishment, inner child healing work, breathwork, somatic movement, gentle routines, supportive herbs. If you're not under proper medical supervision, this is absolutely non-negotiable. Panchakarma is not something to download from the internet and try over the weekend. This is not a kitchari cleanse. It must be customized by an experienced practitioner who understands your prakriti, your constitution, your vikriti, your imbalance, and your current life context. So to my sisters over 35, if you feel like your energy has dimmed, your digestion is chaotic, if your skin is dull, your hormones are all over the place, I want to assure you, you're not breaking. A guided panchakarma cleanse can be the sacred reset you are craving, done wisely, with love and support, it doesn't just cleanse your body, it clears the path back to unleashing your Shakti, your inner dynamic energy of creation. Don't forget to like, hit that subscribe button, and share with a sister who needs to hear this.
