Moving from Academia to VC | Lux Capital Investor Shahin Farshchi

Shahin Farshchi narrates his journey from growing up near Berkeley to studying CS/EE at UC Berkeley, working at General Motors, pursuing a PhD focused on MEMS and radio circuit design, and founding a small startup commercializing neural probes for research. That startup taught him that strong science does not guarantee a large market — emphasizing market size and dynamics before product development. He learned about venture capital via a UCLA class and cold outreach (circa 2005), built a relationship with Lux Capital, joined them as an associate in 2007 (moving to New York), and later helped establish Lux’s Palo Alto office.
