#askacoach - Is there anything that can help me with brain fog?

Sean Buttner addresses brain fog in new parents by first ruling out medical causes, then recommending sleep, three liters of water daily, balanced nutrition, movement, and intentional breaks. He suggests tracking which habits actually boost your focus and using social support like childcare or accountability groups to make them stick.

Foreign. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Friday show of Ask a coach a Question. I'm your host, Sean Butner, certified high performance coach. And, you know, this show is all about answering the questions you guys submit throughout the week to help you advance your life and goals in your career or life in general. Relationships, health, that kind of stuff, and feel more joy, confidence, and engagement. So I'm really excited for this show because I had a question this week on, you know, is there anything that can help me with brain Fog? Somebody was like, yeah, you know, I have a young infant. I just always have that brain fog. And I was wondering if there's anything that might be able to help me out. So jumping right into that. First off, guys, if you have any questions or, like, this video, make sure you, like, share, subscribe, do all the social media stuff as you see the banner pop up. And yeah, if you have any questions, I'll schedule it for next Friday's show. So I really love doing these. It's exciting. It's stuff that's grounded in real questions people have. And so instead of just saying like, hey, like, high performance, you know, can help you, you can actually see it in action. And that's what I love about this show. So, okay, getting into brain fog. The first thing we have to believe about ourselves when it comes to if you have brain fog and you're struggling with it, is that you can create the energy that you want. And I'll caveat this, that, you know, this idea of, you know, not being as sharp mentally as you want could be for many different reasons. So you definitely want to check in with your medical professionals, your doctor, you know, because it could be something serious. It could be, you know, lack of sleep. It could be hydration. It could be nutrition. It could be allergies. It could. There are so many different reasons why we can. We could be staring at a computer for too long, right? And so there's all these different reasons. So we need to get clear on what is causing it. But we also have this. This belief that we can generate and create the energy that we want every day, right? So if you're asking yourself, how can I get rid of brain fog? You're probably already in that boat. And I want to honor that because, you know, you're. You're trying to figure out there's a, you know, but the other way is. So anyways, instead of getting tripped up on that, so get clear on what it is. Contact your medical professionals if it's something like that. And so if it's not something medical in my experience for myself and clients, you know, gotta, you have to review your energy creating habits. Okay, so if like for me I have bouts of insomnia and I know that when I have a terrible night's sleep, it's a lot of brain fog for me the next day. So I have to manage my energy with meditation, quick naps, if I can manage it more like walks outside, getting the body moving and so things of that nature to help me kind of brush that fog away. But it's also making sure I'm eating properly. You know, you don't want to be eating a lot of junk food if you're tired because that'll just kind of feed into the, the brain fogginess, the mental fatigue of it all. You need to make sure that you're drinking tons and tons of water. You know, so many times when we feel exhausted or we don't feel like we can think as clear, it's just we're not drinking enough water. So the high performance standard is like three liters a day. If you can manage, if you're active and sweat a lot, maybe six. All depends on you. Again, but that's another kind of avenue to attack it as an energy habit. You know, making sure that you're moving your body, you're exercising. You know, if you've been consistently sitting for long periods of time because of your career, it can, you know, that can have an impact of slowing down your mind. So you got to make sure you're getting up, you know, if you're standing when you can, if you're working at a desk and you know, just making sure that your body is, is getting worked right because it's counterintuitive. It might make you feel more tired, but it can sharpen your brain. And trust me, I learned that through marathon training. When you're running for forever, you know, miles and miles and miles, your mind eventually gets to a point where your body's tired. Your mind is like, okay, let's distract ourselves. So as a little anecdote, okay, so you got to review your energy habits. You need to make sure you're executing right. So it's one thing to know that you need to sleep well, hydrate, eat properly, you take care of the ABCs of, you know, maintaining your energy. It's another thing to be like, before lunch, I'm going for 20 minute walk outside. Or it's, I'm going to do jumping jacks before I go into this meeting. Or you know, I'm taking the proper Breaks, right? That's another habit I didn't mention on creating energy. But if you're staring at screens with lights on for a lot or for long periods of time, it's really important to take eyebreaks or to just break up your focus. So every hour, spend two minutes just closing your eyes, taking deep breaths in and out. You know, just. And little breaks like that consistently throughout the day can help you focus better, help you, you clear out the cobwebs. Okay, so we know you have to get clear on what's causing it. You have to review your energy creating habits. You have to execute on those with boldness and intention. We also have to review which ones are working for us. Right? So we might say, I always go for a walk, but I still feel tired. It's not really effective. So what are the habits that are really helping your energy? And then conversely, what are the habits that are draining your energy? So if you have that brain fog and you're making bad food decisions, you know, that's maybe a habit you need to kind of figure out and have healthier snacks or whatever you got to do to figure that out. I won't solve that in this video today. But just being aware of what is helping you focus and what it isn't helping you focus and being conscious of every week, what's going on there. So keeping maybe a journal to help you with that. And then finally it's to engage your social groups. So if it's, you're tired, and in this case there's a mention of a infant, you know, do you have people that can watch the kids so you can get a solid nine hours of sleep? You know, it's like the gold from what I hear. My friends that have kids, you know, is it making it a game of going out for walks and having a sticker chart where you're putting stickers on every time you're doing something healthy for yourself to build that energy so that you have a social reason to go out and do it, or getting a group of friends to go running or, you know, on and on and on. There's so many different ways we can engage our social networks to help support us in being more focused or generating the energy we need. So hope that answers your question. This is using the high performance walkthrough kind of like set of questions and areas that we focus on in high performance to address this problem. Of course, as always, having, you know, coaching someone in real time to get more information and to tailor and deep dive into what actually is going on is always way more helpful. And you can, you know, shoot me a note if you're interested in finding more about that. But really, guys, if you have any questions, if you like this, if you took away an idea from this video, comment in the video below, I'd love to hear from you. You do? Hashtag ask a coach. That would be really awesome. And again, you ask those questions. I'll come with them if you leave a comment. I'll celebrate you next week, too, because this is our community and I'm very grateful for it. So that's it, guys. Hope you had a or have a great Friday and a great weekend. This is Sean Butner signing off saying, live with more joy, personal growth and impact in your community.
