Do Your Best, Always!

Shawn Buttner, a high-performance coach, argues that limiting beliefs like being too old or inexperienced keep people from their best work. He defines high performance as consistently exceeding ordinary standards without sacrificing health or relationships, and says personal effort, not just outcomes, should measure success. He's hosting a live workshop Friday at 1 pm PST on three habits to break through barriers.

What gets in people's ways of trying your best? It's not believing in yourself, right? It's not having the self confidence or the feeling that you're worthy of success. And I have helped so many people deal with that tape in their head that says you're too old, you're not experienced enough, nobody really cares about you, what are you doing, these types of things, and it just takes a little nudge, it takes a little shift. Hey everyone. Welcome to Start yout Week. Great. Start your week with a coach. I'm your host, Shawn Buttner, certified high performance coach. And this week we're talking about how, how you should always try your best, right? And I know it's something that a lot of people hear growing up. It's a little cliche, but it's something that is really meaningful to me. And for the reason that, you know, we have people that really influence us in our lives. And one of those people is my dad. You know, growing up, he was always telling me and my little brother to be kind, treat people with respect to if you do something, put your whole heart into it, find something you're passionate about, and you know, things like if you put your mind to it and stick with it long enough, you can do pretty much anything. And so when I stumbled upon high performance and got certified as a high performance coach, the definition of high performance is to consistently beat whatever normal in your life without destroying your relationships or your health. And I really connected with that. You know, I didn't realize at the time, but that that was a different wording of a message I've had my whole life. And I'm not sure if you've ever had that feeling of recognizing maybe after the fact of a message that you've heard over and over again in your life manifesting in a different way and it draws you to it. And so the process of learning about high performance, becoming a high performer or on that journey, right? Because we all struggle, you know, it's really important that we always try our best. And so what gets in people's ways of trying your best, it's not believing in yourself, right? It's not having the self confidence or the feeling that you're worthy of success. And I have helped so many people deal with that tape in their head that says you're too old, you're not experienced enough, nobody really cares about you, what are you doing? Like these types of things. And it just takes a little nudge, it takes a little shift. You know, we can be so tough on ourselves and if you are tough on yourself, you know, I am. And I constantly have to think, how can I give myself a little bit of grace, a little bit of room, a way to judge if I'm doing the right thing or not. And for me, that yardstick has always been how hard have I tried at accomplishing that goal of pushing the business of writing the best code possible, of working and creating a high performance team around me. Those types of things, you know, that I did in tech, you know, or just in life, like trying to be the best guitar player I can be, even though nobody hears me because it's just for me, right? So this pursuit of doing the best, being the best you can be, has always been my measuring stick. And I think if you've had that feeling where you get to the end of the day and you think, you know what? I laid everything out on the table. I, you know, went all in, threw down my cards and either the hand was good enough to win or, you know, I lost everything. But at least I tried. I got into action, put myself out there, and I learned something, right? And that's the thing about always pushing that edge. If you're always putting forth your maximum effort, as Deadpool would say, if you like the Marvel movies. So if you're putting forth maximum effort, at the end of the day, you earn the right to be like, you know what? I did everything in my power today. I learned. I took away these things. I know what to do. I know an idea of something I can change to maybe get a different result tomorrow. But I honored myself. I honored my family. I was able to show the world and stand up tall and say, hey, I'm here. This is what I'm going after. I'm going to be here tomorrow, and you can't ignore me. It's that kind of feeling of almost defiance, you know, like, hey, I'm here and I'm making it happen, you know, and that's what I want for you. That's what I want for my clients. You know, I have had so many clients that, like I said, had that tape in their head of, you know, I'm not good enough, I'm not strong enough, I'm not experienced enough. And it's old beliefs, it's old habits, it's old ways of being that get in the way. And this art of high performance coaching process that I'm certified in to guide people through, to give them the map to figure out why is that a struggle? Why are you getting in your own way? How can we get you around that. And sometimes it's someone else who's unbiased, who wants the best for you, saying like, no, you're doing great. Just give yourself a little bit more credit. Have take permission to say, look yourself in the mirror and be like, I'm awesome. I've done accomplished all these things. There's all these things that I struggle with. And that's part of being a human. I'm a human. And let's go forward, right? Let's figure out how to not let that slow us down. And so that's what I want for you. That's the whole reason for this little video today, is to say, what are you doing that you're putting your full heart in? And if you're not, what's getting in the way, you know, send me a note, post a message below this video or whatever, wherever you're watching it. And you know what is holding you back? Because for everything that's holding you back, there's a perspective or a technique or a way of thinking about it or an idea that can get you over it. And I firmly believe we have that agency in our life to choose something different, to not get stuck in things that keep happening to us and to be that force of good and change for ourselves and our families. So, you know, what's holding you back? Put that below in the comments below. Yeah, guys, like, I wish I had more for you, but I just wanted to tell share a little bit of this story of why I'm a coach, of why I think you can do a lot more and not in a way where you could do a lot, everyone could do a lot more. I believe that. And I know if you're watching this, you're a high performer and you dream big. And when you dream big and you have that moonshot, you're going to fall short time to time. And that's okay, right? If you're going to fall short, you want it to be for something big and not something, you know, incrementally small, right? So if you're like, I'm going to go on a diet and you know, my big goal is to just walk outside once a day and then you don't walk outside once a day, you're going to really beat yourself up and maybe, you know, it's going to feel different than if you're like, I'm going to run a marathon and today I didn't run because my body's broke or today I didn't run because I don't know how to run. Right. And that space and time. Right. I'm gonna run a marathon in the next year. Maybe I missed today. Not a big deal, as long as I don't make this consistent. Right? Whereas if I just need to run every day, you miss one day, you're like, oh, I'm not a runner, and you stop. Right? I've seen so many people do stuff like that. Don't be that person. Be the person that has that big dream, you know, Think about your ambitions. What do you want from your life again? What do you want that's exciting and something to look forward to for yourself? Especially now at the end of 2021, as we're wrapping this year up and you know, a year and a half of weird quarantine type Covid status and all that stuff. Like we need to get back into dreaming. We need to be. Get back into feeling that positive expectation for our future and that's going to pull us up forward. This is going to make us succeed. And so I'll just end with that. Guys, what is your big dream? Go and just think about it. Think about how your life would be different if you're making those strides, trying your best towards that end goal. And I promise you it's worth it. The journey is worth it. And I firmly believe that. So if you do do that and you're still struggling, I want to let you know that on this Friday coming up, I have a transformative, transformative high performance workshop where we're going to work on three habits together on a live zoom call on how you can bust through whatever holding you back, get you thinking about your future again, get you into your energy and get you making any big decisions that you're putting off to make sure you finish this year strong. Because I believe anyone can learn these types of skills. Just takes a little bit of community, takes a little bit of that reflection time and doing the work. And that's why we're going to do this workshop for you next Friday. So if that sounds like something you're interested in, check out the link below and you'll get the zoom link for Friday at 1pm Pacific Standard Time for the transformative performance habits workshop. Okay, so that's the plug for the video today at the end of the video. Let's do our best. Let's dream big. And I hope to see you guys on that call next Friday. So take care, guys. See you then. Sa.
