#SYDWAC - Be The Optimist

Sean Buttner argues that constant complaining creates stress and hopelessness, but you can't control events, only your response to them. Finding small moments of joy and modeling calm energy shifts how you feel and inspires others to do the same.

Coach, I am your host, Sean Butner, certified high performance coach. And this is the show that helps you live better by applying ideas from psychology, from personal development and high performance. Today is the day where I'm calling on everyone to be the optimist. Now imagine a situation either with a co worker or someone you live with, maybe your spouse, you're sitting at breakfast and. And all they can do is complain. Or maybe it's you, who knows? But, you know, they complain about their job, they complain about how their favorite cereals run out at home, they complain about how tough their day and week is going to be. And being a good spouse or being a good teammate, being a good leader, you want to help, but how? Right? It can be very tricky to be the optimist in your family or at your gig because there are tons of terrible, annoying things out in the world. So let's acknowledge that, that the world isn't perfect, and let's choose not to focus on how imperfect it is. Because if that's all we're ever doing, all we're doing is creating stress, we're creating hopelessness, we're creating frustration and anger. And we lose control of how we want to feel each day, and we lose control about our ability to make change out in the world. So we lose sight of what we can do to positively, positively transform what's around us. Now, you know, the job might be stressful, the situation out in the world might be dark, but that energy doesn't have to define us. You know, and so much of personal development, you know, Dale Carnegie, and I'll paraphrase him as like, you can't control what happens to you, but you can control how you approach it. And so if we can still find small amounts, amounts or moments of joy during the day when we make a difference in a customer's life, or we can see the people we love at the end of the day, you know, we can focus on putting our good out into the world and to our families, into the communities and, you know, all the people around us and helping others realize that it doesn't have to be so heavy or they don't have to be defined by their negative expectations of their day, is just role modeling that for others, right? So if you can be that source of calm, that source of good energy, the source that, you know, when things are going cruddy, people are like, well, you're still pretty upbeat. Maybe I should lighten up a little bit, you know, crack some jokes. You know, if we can shift our focus and what's good in our lives. We can shift how we feel about the day, we can shift how we feel about the. The world, and it can keep us actively trying to change it. Right? So this is not a just be happy call to action. It's a lead with your energy, lead with your good work, lead with your good intentions and good actions out there. Because we need you. You know, especially after. You could argue the time period, but, you know, you take a look at the news or any type of media, right? Social media, news organizations, you know, when was the last time you felt really good reading or learning about the news? And is it triggering that fear in you? We don't want that. We want you to be out there putting forth your good energy. Because I believe that as terrible as things get, there are still things that we can learn, things that we can do to make things better, and that's the end of it. So if you needed to hear that message to be the optimist, I encourage you to do it. You know, go forth and put your good energy out there. And if this is making you more grumpy, well, too bad, you know, no worries too. Just have some grace with yourself. It'll pass. It'll get better. I think so.
