#SYDWAC -Control Your Distractions, Control Your Destiny.

Shawn Buttner breaks down how construction noise, coworkers, and interruptions kill your focus, then walks through concrete fixes: noise-cancelling headphones, closing doors, moving to quiet spaces. He compares his open-plan cube forest at Walmart to Apple's closed-office setup to show what actually works.

So you can control your destiny. Now if you've ever been in the situation where it's day three of construction with the apartment or building right across from you and the regular bang is starting to drive you nuts in your home office or maybe that's going on and then the leaf blowers and the lawnmowers come on and there's nowhere in your home office you can escape to, to have a place of where you can be quiet and focus on your work. Or maybe you're at the office and there's nowhere you can hide from the loud sales guy that's screaming into the phone, trying to make a deal, right? Doing good things like maybe not being aware of what's going on around them or it's the people that are consistently coming to your desk, coming to your office and trying to talk to you. You know, these are all a very like wide array of distractions that can pull you off focus, pull you off track on what you got to do today, what you got to focus on. And you know, so everyone has these things that steal away their focus. But the thing to, to think about is what distracts you in your work environment, whether that's at home or in the office. And do you have strategies to cope with each one? So for me, you know, you noticed I listed a lot of noise related things. I one of those people that like to like have quiet or some distracting noise in the background. So when the construction across the way goes on or the leaf blowers start up, you know, I can put on some music if it's still bugging me. I have ear noise canceling headphones that, you know, help me eliminate that distraction so I can get to work on my coaching business at the office. There's this idea of, you know, closing the door whether you have a door or not. And how feasible this is. But you know, might require some negotiation. But you know, when I worked in at Apple, I had a door that I could close and I would just sit there and code, you know, and when the door is closed don't bug me. I'm focusing. I'm trying to keep all the things in my head that I need to in order to do a great knockup job. And so, but I also have worked, you know, when I worked at Walmart, I had lived in one of those cube forests. And so part of it was headphones on, part of it was actually going into meeting rooms in the building or going to a coffee shop, leaving the building so I could sit and you know, work on the code. Or the documents I needed to for my job. So, you know, everyone's going to be a little bit different. But the bottom line is you have to have your strategies, you have to have your tactics in order to get around the things that, you know, bug you. Right. Maybe it's the guy that never refills the coffee in the morning. So you have to bring your own coffee or you have your own contraption, like whatever it is. There's a million different things that could, you know, distract you. There's a million different ways to solve it. The thing is, do you have the strategies? Do you have someone to talk you through these types of strategies? And if you don't, you can always go to Sean Butner.com which I just updated my website, guys. It's really exciting.
