#SYDWAC - Do THIS When You Start To Feel Burnout

Sean Buttner explains how to spot burnout early: skipping workouts, meals, and social time. The fix is counterintuitive: add self-care back in. Three practices work: protect your workouts, take a 15-minute walk outside, and schedule intentional time with people close to you.

Hey, good morning, everyone. Welcome to start your day. Great. Start your day with a coach. I am your certified high performance coach, Sean Butner. And today is Wednesday where we do our high performance topic of the week. So today we're talking about what to do when you start to feel burnout or when you are feeling burnout, right? Because it's really counterintuitive when we start to feel like burnout. If we describe it, maybe it's, you know, some of the signs to figure that out are, you know, when you decide to maybe skip that workout because you got to do a little bit more work and you want to get to the hat. So you're going to skip the workout today or maybe you're gonna work at your desk or skip lunch because you need to act out a little bit more productivity. And really what we're doing is robbing us of the things that help us feel healthy, help us feel connected. Maybe we skip out again on doing the social thing because we need to re energize or get a little bit more work done. And what ends up happening is, is we then isolate ourselves so we're not working out, we're not taking care of ourselves, you know, with blood sugar and stuff by skipping lunch. And we're not being social in a way that helps us feel ready and energized and ready to get out there. So, and I'm saying that as an introvert, right? There is a lot of time where I need just time alone to, to get, you know, figure out my thoughts, how I'm feeling and be happy in the world and have enough energy to go out. But being able to connect with your important people is super important. So what do you do when you burn out? And it's like I said, it's counterintuitive because it's the last thing you want to do. You're going to add something to your day. You're going to add that workout and make sure it happens no matter what. You're going to add a 15 minute walk outside. You're going to add a intentional time where you're sitting with your family or you're sitting with some close friends where you can let go of the day, not focus that you're wearing out and really focus on rejuvenating, right? And so people get the, you gotta rejuvenate. They forget that part of it is letting go and not really paying attention to how kind of drained, how kind of wore out, how kind of maybe crushed you feel, right? And I say this, having worked on early on in my career, being around a lot of burnout right there, the organization I worked in had, you know, probably could have doubled the amount of people working on stuff, and then, you know, would have had enough space for people to have normal lives, right? So I was working like crazy. You know, I go and do meetings all day. I go home, I'd code and do work there. You're expected to work 50 hours a week regardless if you had stuff to do or not. And then you were expected to pick up slack when you got home being salaried. So it was this huge kind of crushing thing after a while, right, where you don't get half time to do your laundry or cook at home or. So you start making some sacrifices. And. And for me, things really turned around when I started to take my health really seriously. I started marathon training as a way to kind of manage that feeling of burnout, that feeling of constantly being tired, that feeling that when people would add stuff to my plate at work, when I didn't really feel like I could say no, that it would cause me to spin for a while, I'm like, how am I going to get this done? And everything else, and this is all the stuff that I'm doing that's not my project work, you know, and so that kind of sense of panic would happen. So how do you so. So making that time for the workout really helped me feel healthy, reduce stress, and training for a marathon is a lot of time to commit. So I don't suggest that everyone does that, but that really disciplined approach to the health helped me feel less burnt out later on, helped me get out of it, actually. I could, you know, quiet my brain down enough from the, like, emotionality of it to think like, okay, like, this is just like, you know, a time management problem, a financial problem or whatever problem. I can think through this. I'm smart enough to do that, and so are you. Everyone can do this, but it can be so hard to get past that emotionality. So that's the one thing you have to do if you feel like you're burning out. It's make sure your workout is on your schedule and you protect it like you would any of your work or any of the other important things in your life. Time outside in the sun is recommended and social. And if you can maybe combine all three of those, like, I had a running buddy also named Sean back in the day, and so we go run outside for an hour every day training for a marathon. Got all three of them. So super effective there. But those Three components I think were very, very important, just for self care, you know, taking care of yourself so that you can perform out in the world. Well, that said guys, if you are a little bit introverted like me and you need some help feeling less burnout or figuring out your next career because you need a change, it's time for something new, it's time for something exciting, something that you really have your heart in. Then there's a free video training below this video called the six Secrets of Highly Performing Introverts. Where we take the high performance science that we know works for everyone, apply it to those of us who are a little bit more introverted, less extroverted, but it works for both. The science says that that doesn't really matter, but I can speak to being an introvert in a large organization such as Apple and Walmart and thriving, right, being able to get promoted, getting noticed in a way that worked for me and I'd love to share with you a process to help you think through your life to get you to that next level. So if you go there, also there's a link or spot below that video to sign up for a free strategy session with me where we take those high performance principles, some of them what we share in this free video training and help you design a plan for your life to get, get you going, get you moving ahead, get you, you know, really in the game, feeling more confident, more present, happier, all that kind of good stuff. The opposite of burnout. So if that's you, check out that link below. If not, I'll be here on Friday for our Friday reflection. So Mondays and Fridays, start your day with the coach. We, you know, have these two habits where we ask three questions to start the week, three questions to end the week so that we are continually growing, progressing, figuring out the way forward and so we can move forward and not get stuck. So I hope you'll join me on Friday at 9 o' clock Pacific Standard Time. That'll be great. And yeah, do the social media thing. Share this with three people you think might enjoy it or might need to hear this message of how to overcome burnout. And if you have any questions, put them below this video. I'll get to them as soon as I can, as soon as I see them. So, okay guys, that said, have a great Wednesday. We'll see you Friday as Shabbat nurse saying, live with more joy, personal growth and impact in your communities. We'll see you on Friday.
