#SYDWAC: Find Your Performance Edge

Sean Buttner explains how to find your performance edge by turning a dial up or down depending on context. He recommends 50-minute focused work blocks and deliberate rest, but warns that intense focus in the wrong moment, like with your spouse, backfires.

Sa. Hey, everyone. Welcome to start your day. Great. Start your day with the coach. I am your certified high performance coach, Sean Butner. And today we're talking about finding your performance edge. So this is a show where we usually talk about habits. And so Mondays and Fridays, we're talking about our weekly reflection. On Fridays, we're talking about our Monday motivations. And today on Wednesday, we just talk about something that can help you move your life forward. And so I have an exciting announcement for y' all there. I'm working on starting a podcast, so I'll tease a little bit more of that as we go on. But I recently was recording for that and had a really amazing conversation about finding your performance edge, meaning, you know, where are you challenging yourself? When are you in flow, when are you able to do that consistently over the long period, over a long period of time without damaging your health, without damaging your relationships? And it was really, really awesome. And the metaphor that was used for it was to flip the switch. And I've heard this in the context of athletes, you know, people in the NFL, you go on the field, you flip the switch, and you're going to, you know, inflict maximum amount of pain on whoever is opposing you. Or in a race, you know, cycling, you flip the switch and you're aggressive. And, you know, normally outside of your sport, you're a nice person, but in that moment, because it's just a game, you are singularly focused on how do you attack, how do you get ahead, how do you finish that race strongly and, you know, and win eventually. Right? But it could also be in the context of this idea of flipping the switch and going into parent mode, right? So you're cool, normal human being, but, you know, you have to lift a car for some heroic effort to help your kid out. You know, you flip the switch and, you know, monster mode, you know, in that kind of way. So there's all these areas where we have this idea where you can psychologically turn on, turn off, over analysis, turn off, you know, a lot of thinking, and you just go into being present and doing what you have to do in the moment to succeed. And, you know, context matters because it's not great to do that and flip the switch and trying to get something out of a particular relationship. So if you're with your spouse, that's a very bad thing to do. It could be a really bad thing to do when you're trying to network. You know, people can usually sense when you're not connecting, when you're not thinking about other People, essentially. Right. And so there's a tension between being in that singularly, you know, focused performance mindset and also being that collaborative, creative, buoyant force that we sometimes need in corporate America. Or, you know, hopefully you're doing that with your families and friends where it's a more of a collaboration versus you need to win and you flip that switch. So it's such an important idea that I wanted to explore with y' all today coming from that, that podcast that I'm referencing. So, you know, what areas in your life do you need to have that type of performance? Performance switch. Right. I think that's a really good place to start this conversation. Where is it when you are writing that book, you have to, you know, turn on and just be singularly focused and how are you taking yourself, taking care of yourself in that process too. Right. So, you know, as a high performance coach, we talk about block time. So you want to be able to, you know, work for a 50 minute block very consistently, singularly focused on accomplishing that thing that's really going to drive your life forward. How do you turn that off and recover your energy? You know, how are you resting and rejuvenating, keeping your energy and your health while you are really crushing it at what you do? You know, it's such an important thing. Also on the other side of that is, you know, where are those moments where you can get into flow and how are you creating those moments in your life? I think that's another way to look at it. It could be, you know, it sounds kind of harsh sometimes to just be like, I just turn off my emotions and turn off my thinking and I just do. Right? And yeah, you know, it could just be, how do you get into a flow state? Right. Maybe it isn't like a hard switch, but a dial. You're slowly amping up when you need to focus, when you need to be creative, when you need to perform, when you need to engage, when you need to connect. And so that question is different for everyone, which is why I'm a coach and why I love my work. Because in a one on one coaching conversation, we can really dig into where do you need that performance edge? Where do you need to be advancing your life? Where do you need that transformation that can really help you reach that next level of success, that next level of performance, your personal best or curse, you know, pr, all that kind of stuff in the context of sports and business and how you're showing up for your relationships. So, yeah, you know, what is that dial and what does that look like and what does that next setting look like for you? You know, I think that's what I love about high performance is another way it's just consistently trying to find the next setting on that dial. So, yeah, what is that for you? What does that look like? How do you manage to get there? The high performance process is a really great way to do it, that coaching process that I help guide people through, but that is what it is. We'll wrap it up here, guys. If you have any questions, post them below. If you know someone that needs to perform at that next level in, you know, either their personal life or professional life, please do me a favor and share this video with them wherever you're watching it and spread the good word because that helps me out and also lets me know what you guys like or what connects so I can do more content like that. So it helps everyone all around. That said, guys, we'll be back on Friday for the weekly reflection where we ask ourselves the same three questions every Friday to assess the week and a plan for next week. I know, I absolutely love doing that show, so hopefully you'll join me for that. So stay tuned for that. Same time, same place, you know, 9 o' clock Pacific Standard Time. Love to do that for you. So with that said, guys, go out there live with more joy, more personal growth and more impact in communities, and I'll see you all on Friday. Yeah, take care.
