#SYDWAC - Leaders See The Path Forward

Shawn Buttner argues that leaders distinguish themselves by finding the next actionable step when stuck and helping others do the same. He recommends daily journaling of intentions, linking actions to your values, and enrolling teammates in the solution as core practices.

Helps you ground the day with some type of personal development or high performance so you can build the life that you want. Now today we're talking about how leaders can see the path forward. Because what do you do when you don't know what to do? If you've ever felt impatient because the progress of a goal or a project has been going a little too slow, or you feel stuck, you don't know what to do, you're spending all this energy trying to figure out what, how do we advance this thing? You know what I'm talking about. If you felt like a relationship's plateaued, you know what I'm talking about. And you know, that feeling of impatience when we're not progressing as quickly as we want, maybe to start a family or again, finish that project or, you know, advance is normal, right? So we all experience this at different areas of our lives, at different times of our lives. But what separates a high performer or, or a leader in these instances is how they handle ambiguity and how do they get clear on that next step to get back into action, you know, and you know, I do a lot of this in my one on one work with clients. But you know, you have to believe that it's up to you to find the next step, you know, forward. And whether you are the leader on the team or the leader in, you know, planning the vacation for the family, or you're one of the kids or, or you know, you're just individual contributor or whatever, just a participant or just a part of the team, it's up to you to help everyone else get clear. Because not only does it show your leadership and you'll get noticed, which is, I think we all want that in our careers, in our families, but it also, it's a co creation process. Right. You know, you can have a personal goal to, you know, I'm going to get into the best health of my life. We talk about that a lot in certified high performance coaching. And you know, you could try a lot of things yourself. I think this is the way to do it. Or you can talk to a personal trainer, or you can talk to a nutritionist, or you can talk to, you know, a sleep specialist because you're not getting enough sleep. You know, there's a lot of this collaboration, right. A lot of times I think people think I do everything by myself, which, you know, ultimately you do your own actions, you own your own actions. We are in control of our own lives, but it's also in relation to other people's expertise. It's always in relation to our support networks and our family that cheer us on and, you know, being a part of, you know, helping others get clarity, you'll get it in return, it'll reciprocate. So that's pretty awesome. So you also have to constantly be questioning, how clear are you on your. Your goals, your next step, and helping those around you with that also. So, you know, it's like, am I on the right path? You know, is this really helping me get closer to the objective? It's questions like, how could we do this differently to maybe advance a little bit more quicker? You know, these types of common questions that I hope you're journaling every morning on with your day, like, what's my intention for the day? You talk a lot about that on the show, you know, and how is that in relation to your values and the values of the people you interact with or work with or, you know, your family members, or how does it interact with the values of the organization, the community of society at large? Right, because being able to understand that and connect the dots so that everyone is aligned towards getting the goal figured out is sometimes part of it on a team. But, you know, personally, like, it can help you think, like, oh, if I want to go on vacation, and I know that my spouse loves the beach and my son or daughter loves the snow, you know, where can you go that can kind of take care of all those different things. If you're trying to figure out a vacation, right, and you don't want to be the person that just makes a decision and then somebody's upset and it's a big mess. Right. So maybe not the best example, but something I'm trying to pull because it's a live show, folks. But the important thing is, is being very clear on what you want, what everyone else wants, and trying to come up with solutions that enroll people into the. The end result or the project or what's going on. Because if you're trying to build a high performance team, that enrollment is very key, especially if you want to keep the best talent, you know, in my experience, because, you know, people are smart, people want to contribute. And I think that's also a very key belief that people want to contribute, people want to be pushed forward. So I know we're going a little bit all over the place, but I'm trying to give some concrete examples of how being very clear in the path forward can really help you. So if you feel stuck on your team or, you know, your job as a leader is to help everyone else figure out a higher level of clarity because leaders, the people in the front, see the path forward and can help people navigate. And it's not in a vacuum. Right? You need to know where everyone wants to go. So that said, guys, that is our quick show today. And if you have any questions, you can always drop a line.
