#SYDWAC - Start The Thing And Learn!

Shawn Buttner says the way to break through feeling stuck on a big change is to define one concrete first step, work backwards from your goal, and stop waiting for perfection. He argues that mentors and community matter more than the myth of the self-made person.

A great start your day with the coach. I am your host, Shawn Butner, certified high performance coach. And we talk about things in personal development, in high performance, in anything that'll get you moving forward in your life, going after your ambitions and living and getting that better life that you want. Now, today we're talking about that time when you've ever decided to have a huge change in your life. Now, maybe you're thinking, I need to start a business or change my career, or maybe you're thinking, like, I really need to figure out my health. It's really a problem. I need to get in the best health of my life. Or maybe you decide that, hey, I would love to have deeper relationships or more support in what I'm going after in the world or the missions that I'm helping my community with, or just overall, like, I just want to feel happier. You know, that is a fair ambition also. And as you decided that, you're like, okay, something needs to change, and then you get stuck right away, right? You know, you knew what your big ambition was, yet you didn't see the path forward. You know, you wanted something different. And then you get frustrated right away because you can't get the traction or momentum as you need going forward. So in these moments, we need to get really explicit on what our next steps are. So, you know, it's like, if you're gonna run a marathon, you need to know what the first step of the race is gonna look like, because that first step gets you that much closer to 26.2 miles. So, like, if. If you're trying to start a business, you're like, okay, I can imagine myself opening the business, having customers come in, really making a difference, doing really great work, you know, feeling good that I'm helping people, making a better life for my family. You know, you get that image in your head, and then you're like, but I'm working at my day job right now, and I don't have the time. I don't have resources, I don't know what I need to do next. So, you know, we can take a look and, like, work backwards. So you have that business where it's awesome, it's thriving, and you're doing great. And then you say, okay, well, in order to start that, right, day one, where you have the business, you open the door, put the open sign on, you know, talk with your spouse, and get really excited about what you're doing. Before that, you had to have some type of paperwork with your local government, right? So state here in The United States. So then if you have to do paperwork, you have to make the decision, like, how do I organize the business? Is it a llc? Is it a sole proprietorship? Is it a corporation? That kind of stuff. And so you have to make that decision. And then, oh, if you're going to, you know, start a business, you also have to think, like, what do I bring to the table? How am I helping people? Or adding value to people in exchange for getting cash money, millions from them. So, you know, so you have to have the product, you have that the offer figured out. And, oh, you also, like, maybe you need a team. Depending on what you're doing, you have to think that through. And so there's all these decisions that lead up to day one, starting a business. And here's the key idea though, right? Whatever that is for you, whatever you're going after in health, you know, maybe you're trying to run the marathon and you're like, okay, I have to do all the training things and all that, or maybe it's starting a business or, you know, it could be anything, but you have that vision. You don't have to be a hundred percent right on all the steps that'll get you to that, you know, first initial thing, right? So crossing the finish line for a marathon, starting that business, day one, right, you're probably not going to have everything 100 correct. And if you can accept that, like, okay, I'll have to learn a little bit, give myself a little bit of grace, give myself a little bit of permission to be messy and to figure it out, you'll be more likely to succeed, but it also takes the pressure off, right? You don't have to have everything lined up, you know, perfectly in order to take the leap to make that transformation, to get started, to get in the game, right? Because as soon as you're in the game and you're like, okay, I think this is the first step. Is it getting me closer to the goal or not? Right? That's the only question you have to be asking yourself. And if not, okay, maybe this isn't the thing that I thought so, you know, this ability to be able to handle change, to be able to handle adversity, comes down to like, hey, man, I'm just learning, right? So at the first sign of hardship or challenge, you're not going to quit because you're just learning, you're figuring it out, right? And you got it. And you do. I think I can't think of any situation with a client, with myself, with friends or family, when you really were in it. But you didn't figure it out, right? Maybe not on the time that you wanted, but eventually people did. So, you know, here's the other thing to think about though is like you don't have to operate in isolation, right? You know, we're coming out of COVID a lot of isolation, a lot of people doing stuff at home for themselves and that's fine, you know, and you know, we have this idea in the US too of the rugged individual that, you know, the self made man that figured it out all by themselves, didn't have any help. And that's kind of BS in my experience. You need people to buy your stuff, you need people on your team to help deliver that stuff. You know, we are so more interconnected than we think. And as an individual you can make a huge difference and can make huge change and offer and create a lot of great things, but it's never a 100% you like, it's always in relation to people. But what does that even mean? I kind of ranting there but the idea is like as an entrepreneur or trying to get into health or trying to, you know, find a better support group, it's all about, you know, finding those mentors, finding your community, finding training or finding information that'll help you excel at what you're doing, do best practices, avoid common mistakes, that kind of thing. So, and if you are in a transformation right now and you'd like a process and support through that, I offer a free one hour strategy session at shawbutter.com coaching so make sure you check that out. So you have the social support, you have a process for breakthroughs. If you feel stuck, the stuff is so like all my clients absolutely love the one on one coaching process. So check it out if you're feeling stuck. But at the end of the day, you know, if you want to confidently go through a transformation, you need to have some beliefs about yourself that say I can do this, get out of your own way. You know the voices that say, hey, you're not good enough, hey, you can't figure this out. Hey, you know, whatever kind of self doubt type thing goes up, you need to have that in check and you need to be able to say no, no, I got this. Cause you do. And sometimes if you don't believe that, maybe you need someone else to tell you that. So like a mentor or someone else to say, hey, I believe in you, you're doing the right thing. Keep going, we're cheering you on, you know, and if you can engage others along the way on the journey of reaching that big transformation. I think you're going to be happier anyways because we are such social creatures. We love, you know, having people celebrate stuff with. So I hope to celebrate you in some, you know, near future on your big transformation, that big thing that you went after and accomplished, because we need more people, you know, striving. We need more people know, doing what is going to make their lives better. So. That said, guys, hope you like the Monday show. I'll be back here tomorrow, probably about nine or 10 again, you know, same time, same place for start your day. Great. Start your day with the coach. This is Sean Butner signing off. Take care, guys.
