#SYDWAC: Weekly Reflection - What's The Next Best Action?

Sean Buttner walks through a weekly reflection habit using three questions: what went well, what didn't, and what you'll do differently next week. He applies the "next best action" framework to gun control advocacy and everyday decisions in relationships and work.

Start your day. Great. Start your day with a coach. I am your certified high performance coach, Sean Butner. And today we're talking about the weekly reflection, our weekly habit of asking ourselves the same three questions to make sure that we feel progress in our lives. And before that, though, we're going to get into talking about what is your next bold best action? And I love this question. And because, excuse me, guys, I love this question because it's always in times of uncertainty, in times of turmoil, when you feel like you plateau. This question is so important on getting rid of the noise and taking the next best action. So this mostly came up from the news this week. I think, as we all know, the tragedy that happened in Texas and how terrible it is for another school shooting. And there's a lot of things being said, there's a lot of emotions flaring right now and we have to take a step back from that and think what is the next best action? And if you think about it in terms of we have policies right now that are the result of our legislators and people in leadership positions in our government who have led to this moment, who have let this happen. Right. And they have the power to change policies to protect our school children, to protect a majority of Americans from violent gun violence with practical common sense arms controls and, you know, gun controls, however you want to talk about it, it's arms controls really. And we can protect the Second Amendment and have these common sense things like there is a world where that exists. So I don't know where you are on that political spectrum and I don't particularly care about it because that's what I would consider noise. What really it comes down to is if there needs to be some productive action, we need to elect out people who support the nra, who are impeding action on these common sense things that we can move forward with. And I don't often share my personal beliefs on this channel because it's all about getting to the next level. But, you know, I feel like this is a moment in time where we need to take a quick breath as we reflect about the week and think, what are we going to do? You know, it's voting out people that are preventing these common sense gun controls, arms controls in the US it's people who are not imaginative enough to think that, yeah, we have constitutional rights and we do need to protect those. And that is important. And we also need to protect people from deadly weapons where all it takes is a bad day. You get drunk, you get really cut off in traffic, your anger takes over, you lose that judgment and for a split second, people die. Right. And that would not happen with a different type of weapon. If you didn't have a gun, you'd have to go up and beat up people and you would probably calm down before then. So I think it's super important to then in this particular circumstance, then, like, how do we elect people that want to lead in government and do the right thing and have some common sense changes that balance all of these competing interests? Because you don't hear that a lot on the news, or at least I haven't, but it is super important. So in that case, that's the next best action. Get involved in your local politics, the people in your town, the people in your state, when it comes to the midterms, and use that as a criteria of who is willing to be uncomfortable and work through this really complex issue in a way that results in action. Because thoughts and prayers not backed up with action is sinful in my opinion, too. And I use that word very particularly because we have free will, we have an ability to enact change. And if we see something going wrong and we're in a position to change it and we don't, then we are not. We're giving up our power. We. I don't know what's going on. Why did you volunteer to be in that particular position if you're not willing to step up and say, this needs to change? So that's a little bit more serious on the morning show than I normally do. So. But Trent, outside of that particular issue that you can't not think about this week, you know, this concept of choosing the next best action in your relationship, you know, if you have a spouse and you guys had a fight, is the next best action to try to heal, to try to mend that? Is it to do something nice to, you know, do something in service to that person, or is it to hold on to resentment and. And never forgive them ever again? You know, if you are struggling or in your career, like you need to find a new job or you want to switch jobs or you're trying to get promoted, what's the next best action that'll help you add value, get noticed and get promoted? Because you could complain about it, you could come up with all the other reasons why other people are keeping you back and whatever, but ultimately it's that next best action that will help us move forward and achieve the career and the fulfillment that we want from that. So, you know, just to give a couple of different contexts, not just the super heavy, serious one that we need to be talking about, we need to talk about even more in my opinion. So. All right, so that said, guys, you know, before we get into three questions, please do the social media thing like subscribe. If you have a question, question or comment, please post that below if you have a next best action that you've been struggling with. You know, this is what I do. This is my bread and butter as a coach. So I help people help figure that out and then have some accountability to follow through and see that to fruition. So I'll tell you about a way to work with me here in a little bit. So, but let's get into the three weekly reflection questions and this is, you know, taking a look at the week and our performance and our self discovery and really, you know, our relationships, our whole life and thinking like, how can we make next week better? Because I'm a firm believer that, you know, incremental change consistently over time is what leads to the big success it has in my life. I've proven it over and over again. I have tons of videos that talk about it. So I won't get into that too, too much. But the first thing to ask yourself this week when we get grounded here into our weekly habit is number one, what went well this week? What in spite of the news, in spite of, you know, whatever happened and you know, what really worked, right? What did you plan and got after and succeeded and celebrate that and feel that in your heart, what, you know, did you accomplish or what did you help? What did you do in service for somebody else and really consider and incorporate that into how you're feeling. That one helps you just kind of incorporate those wins, you know, so many times some of the people that I work with as a certified high performance coach are so productive, you know, have done so much and they never give themselves credit. You're like, I raised three kids, I had a full time job at a school, I did all these things but you know, was I a good person at the end of the day? It's like you raised three kids pretty well, you know, and they're great and you know, you got, you did the job thing too. Like, I can't stress how that's how you should be talking to yourself when you're thinking of things you accomplished this week. It should be with excitement, it should be with some joy, it should be with some appreciation for yourself. And I think that can really transform how you feel going into the weekend and how fired up you get for next week. Because I Love this stuff, guys. Okay. Anyways, question number two. What didn't go as expected this past week? And I love this question. And this is the high performance magic question, because it's, I planned this, I went after this. I did the work, I sweat, I bled, I cried a little bit, and it didn't turn out the way that I wanted to. And high performance and personal growth is a learning journey. And so if you can identify, like, okay, I tried this. This didn't work, or this kind of worked, maybe if I tweaked it this way, next week I'll get a different result. That's how you get mastery. That's how you get progress. That's how you really, over time, see success. And so asking yourself this question regularly and identifying the areas that don't make you a bad person or ineffective or lazy or any of those things, it's just like, okay, you know, I did not work enough in my business this week because I was goofing off, right? Check. Okay. How can I not goof off next week? And because that's the next question is, what are the things that you are going to try and do differently next week? You know, and just try to come up with three. Right. Doesn't have to be a long laundry list. But you're like, oh, I got distracted watching Netflix. Maybe I should cancel Netflix. I don't know, maybe you're crazy that way. Or maybe it's, hey, like, I, you know, reached out and sent 10 notes of appreciation to people in my. At my job, and people really love that. And I was connected. I felt really connected to that team a little bit more. Maybe you should do that again, you know, so it's as much redoing the things that worked and helped you win as it is to thinking like, okay, I need to tweak something that I tried and it didn't go the way that I wanted to. It's such. I know this might seem common sense, it might seem easy, but the reason why it's a weekly habit is it's a reminder for us to get into this concept and get into this work. So. All right, those are the three questions, guys. I hope they've served you. I hope you took some notes on it. I hope you're journaling about it. Hope it got you thinking in your head again. If you are struggling with figuring out your next best action, like we talked about it at the top of the video, top of the live, or you're really having some trouble kind of deconstructing what happened last week in this reflection process. Sometimes that's why you need a coach and I love to do that for folks. So if you'd love to work with me on that and help and we can co create a personalized plan for you. There's a link below this video or a link in my bio to the six secrets of highly performing introverts and click on that. There's a free training there that gives you six habits and that'll help you perform even more. But more importantly, at the bottom of that page there's an application to work with me. So you get a free one hour strategy session where we go through the five pillars of high performance and how it relates to your life and the things that are going on in your life. And we tailor some habits, some high performance habits. We help you learn a little bit about yourself, we help you really have that solid plan from that and then you go from there either, you know, at the end of that call, if it works for both of us, if I think you'd be a great comp client, we go ahead and figure out the coaching relationship afterwards. If not, we had an amazing talk and so many people love the strategy session. I love doing them. So if it doesn't work out, cool, you know, I think it's putting good out in the world and having some ripple effects of people getting into action, getting into their lives, transforming, leveling up, really just getting pumped and excited for their ambitions and the things they're going after. So I'd love to do that for y'. All. So hit the link below this video or the link in my bio and of course, you know, please do the social media thing like share, subscribe, hit the notification bell wherever you're watching. This helps me out and helps me understand what you guys like. So it's a co creation process and I do listen and I try to reply within the next hour or a couple hours if I can't catch you while we're live here. So. All right guys, that said, have a great memorial weekend. Hopefully you're connected with family and friends, you know, maybe doing some cookouts, that kind of stuff. I'm really excited I'll be doing that with some family and friends. So with that said, go out there, live with more joy, with more personal growth and more impact in your communities and we'll see you Monday for Monday motivation. Take care guys.
