#SYDWAC - What Are You Learning That’s Fun?

Shawn Buttner argues that constantly learning new skills beats staying comfortable, using his own struggles with camera gear and stream graphics as examples. He contrasts a learner's mindset with a coaster mindset, saying one leads to higher performance and the other to stagnation.

Sa. Foreign. Hey everyone. Welcome to start your day. Great. Start your day with the coach. I'm your host, Sean Butner. I don't know what's up with my camera here. I'm just gonna switch it to this. So super, super frustrating camera I think has been possessed. And we're live, so of course it's gonna go act all fake funky. So any case, today we're going to be talking about what are you learning that's fun? Because there's just certain times in our life where we're just in it. You know those times when you're totally in flow, you're focused, you're toiling, you're building, you're creating, you're doing the work and it's great. And there are those times too where we are going through hell trying to, to just get to the other side. And we sometimes wonder like, how will I ever get through this, right? If you've ever had like 50 different projects trying to finish up at the exact same point, that camera's still acting funny and wanting to switch on, you know, you know what I'm talking about? Where, you know, maybe there's been an unexpected event in your life, like a family member passing away or someone in an accident or, you know, just an opportunity that was too good to refuse and so you had to do it. And now you're stressed out beyond belief because you're like, how do I, how does this work? How's this gonna happen? So you know, what separates those two times though, when we're in it doing the work and then when we're stressed out and just miserable throughout the process. And the answer is it all comes down to the learner's mindset. Now what is the learner's mindset? It's the mindset that we are, we can learn, right? It's pretty self explanatory. But beyond that, it's that mindset that we want to operate at the edge of our capability and where we're constantly pushing our ability to, you know, do skills. I'm getting caught up in my head because of the stupid camera, because we're live folks anyways, you know, and so it's that learner's mindset that I want to learn, I want to grow, I want to push, I want to be better, right? I want to advance, I want progress in my life. And on the opposite end, we have the comfortably coasting mindset where we don't want to rock the boat, we just want to keep doing what we're doing because it works and we have it figured out and that's fine. But what ends up happening is, you know, the learner's mindset. We're constantly thinking, how can I do this better? How can I do this with greater service? How can I have a greater impact? And the coaster's mindset is that trying is really too hard. And so let's just do what we know. And over time, we know that the people that have that growth mindset, that learner's mindset, tend to perform a lot better than people that comfortably coast. And, you know, I saw this every day when I worked in tech because, you know, some new gadgets, some new functionality, some new pieces of software seemed to, you know, break every day at least once. Something, you know, and just got quicker and quicker throughout my career in tech. And so the people that thrived, we're able to go, okay, that's cool. Do I need this right now? Is this applicable? Maybe I'll do some research. We have the thing that works, but we want to think about what's coming next. How do we handle all this stuff coming at us in a way that's fun, in a way that advances what we're working on in a fun way. Super cool. The people that tended to fail in that environment were the ones that are like, okay, I figured out how to do this one thing really well, and the system has been. Hasn't changed in the last 10 years. Why do I need to change? And those people struggle. Those people tended to be a little bit more miserable at work. They tended to not be able to adapt to change well, and it impacted their ability to grow in an organization and impacted their ability to relate to others in the organization. So not super good. So, you know, another way to say it is learners experiment and play, and that's fun, right? Coasters will spend time fighting change and making a mess. So, you know, what are you actively doing right now that's, you know, part of that fun learning process for yourself. You know, what are you doing that is helping you advance your skill set, is doing something that brings a little bit of joy to your life, is helping you push the edge of your capabilities so that you're ready for what comes at you tomorrow? Or you're more adaptable, you're more agile. Right? You're more like lightning on your feet. So, yeah, real quick, for me, it's working on getting better at stream graphics and figuring out this dumb camera that it's so infuriating, guys. It's been like turning on and off intermittently. Like whether I'm at my computer or just in the room, like I think I need a old priest and a new priest to help come exercise whatever demons this thing has. It's really been kind of frustrating but also funny. So I can make jokes like that on the live stream. So but you know, it could be anything. So what are you learning? What's going on with you? And you know, adopting that learner's mindset can help you have fun and not burn out in the process. So that all said, I want to guys, I want to let you guys know that, you know, sometimes we need someone to help us get clear on our life and you know, help us push us towards our best selves or to be there through the ups and downs in life.
