Sean Buttner walks you through a five-minute exercise to picture your ideal future across career, relationships, health, and well-being. He argues that crises trap you in survival mode and kill long-term thinking. The point: spot one thing you can do today to move toward that vision.

Welcome to start your day. Great. Start your day with the coach. I am your certified high performance coach, Sean Butner. And today we're talking about thinking about the future again. Now, if you've joined me in the show, the past or just new, I just want to remind you that, you know, the whole purpose of the show is to give you a daily strategy, a daily habit, a daily intention to make sure that you start the day great so that you have more consistent great days over time. So as a high performance coach, we're always trying to beat whatever normal in our life. So whether that is, you are burning, you know, the engine on all four cylinders, I completely buffed that. But we're live, so here we go. You know, whether you're going on all four cylinders, you know, in your career, your relationships and your health and how you feel and you're doing great and you're trying to get to that next level of performance or, you know, you're struggling with just everyday stuff, you know, job, career, that kind of stuff, where it's not going so well, these ideas and strategies should help you get to that next level. Now, why are we talking about the future and getting in the future? Because if you've ever been in that survival mode where you've had an unexpected event, like a death in the family, you've had an unexpected layoff, you've had, you know, multiple things that can go wrong in life, and you're struggling, you're. You have a divorce, you know, there's something strongly emotional, maybe physical, maybe, you know, you haven't really shook off the past year and a half of COVID and you're feeling angry, you're feeling anxious, you're feeling overwhelmed, then, you know, in those cases, with the people I've helped this past year, it seems to be we're so focused on today. We're so focused in how do we get through today, how do I get out of bed, how do I show up for the kids, how do I get to work and deal with the boss and all that, we've lost that spark and that excitement for our futures. We've really thought or stopped thinking about, you know what? I'm working to make this big contribution in my career, in my market, in my business. I stopped trying to make and be the best spouse for my partner and the best parent for my kids or the best friend to those that I hold dear around me, or stop thinking about how can I improve my health, right? How instead of doing the convenience foods or whatever available right now, how can I be more proactive in creating better health outputs in my life or how do I just feel better, you know, that kind of stuff. And so when we're in now, we don't think about any of that. We think about, okay, this is what I gotta do to survive. And the antidote and the hint is to take a beat. And it could be five minutes, maybe only half, five minutes with how crazy everything around you is. Everything seems really chaotic. But five minutes of thinking, like, where am I going? Because if we can get you to think about your future with a little bit more excitement, with a little bit more hope, you'll start to see opportunities today as you're trying to manage in that survival mode, to change and work towards that. And I firmly believe that. You know, I don't know how many times in my life I've had that happen to me. You know, growing up, you know, my mom had breast cancer, my dad worked construction, had a couple of pretty serious injuries that knocked him out for like six months at a time, you know, walls falling on him and the like. And so money was tight. And so many times you're like, okay, how do we pay rent? How do we make sure everyone's fed in the family? How do we, you know, make sure there's gas in the car? That those types of stresses. I remember growing up and you know, it could feel, you could feel sort of, it's like, why even try, why even save money if something's going to happen and just wipe out her savings account over and over and over again. Big things, little things, minor things, you know, and so that's the struggle. And I understand that I've had, you know, that in my personal life, you know, when I first started out in tech, I had student loans and all those other bills that I just listen listed and so had to like make choices of like, do I get like the fancy Mac and cheese, you know, like the actual Kraft brand, or do I do the 10 cent stuff you can find at Walmart? I ate a lot of 10 cent Mac and cheese growing up. Trying to, or early on in my career trying to figure that out. But ultimately what changed for me and what changed for a lot of my clients, what changed for my parents was this ability to say, you know, what I'm learning from this? Or hey, like, where are we actually trying to go? Like, what do I really want out of my life? How do I really want to feel? I don't want to worry about money, I don't want to feel stressed all the time. I Don't want to, you know, burden the people around me just feeling miserable, you know, and that change is everything. So the questions I have for you guys today, to get you into your performance, to get you beating, you know, that consistent feeling in your life, that consistent set of circumstances, and start maybe working towards that big future that I know you all have, that big ambition that you have. It's, you know, what would your life look like if your career was absolutely amazing, like it was fulfilling, it inspired you to get up in the morning, it made a difference in other people's lives and you were so enthusiastic every day to get to work, to do what you had to do. And same thing with your relationships. How if your relationship with your spouse and your kids and your family and your friends were amazing, like fantastic, like the model for everyone else around you, what would that look like and how would that feel and do the same thing with your health and your general daily feeling and well being. Because, you know, once we have identified one where we are, right, so you can say, oh, I'm struggling right now because of finances. I'm struggling right now because I feel sad. I'm struggling right now because I don't feel confident. And you see that in that future that can change, right? You could be more confident, you could feel better, you could find out whatever will create abundance in your life. That's where things can change. That's the first step as we move on our personal development journey. So I know think about those future lives. And then the last question for you before we sign off here is what's one thing you could do today to make a little bit of progress towards one of those four big ideal goals of career, relationship health or well being. Because just a little bit of momentum can do a lot for making you feel hopeful, making you feel inspired, making you feel motivated, making you, you know, see that there's possibly light at the end of the tunnel so it doesn't have to be a constant weight on you. You know, get a little bit lighter, get a little bit more going into the future and it's amazing. So with that said, guys, I hope you, you know, get back to dreaming again, right? Get excited for your future and, you know, make some moves today to help you move forward. Because I know it will make a difference in your life, just as it has with my parents, for myself and the people that I serve. So with that said, guys, I also, you know, go live with more joy, growth and impact in your lives. And before we go too, I want to let you know this Friday, I am doing a transformative performance habits workshop for free at 1pm Pacific Standard Time. So if you're interested in that, check the link in my bio or look below this video where you're watching it and you can get signed up for that free Zoom workshop where we'll talk about how to walk through, getting really clear about your future, getting excited about it, how to be a little bit more energetic, how to be a little more energetic, and also how to really make those big decisions if you're struggling with do I switch careers? Do I switch, do I move locations, Do I make a big purchase? You know, that kind of stuff that can really take a lot of brain space. There's a framework that I have that we'll work through. And so on this live workshop, we'll go through those three areas and then you'll have a chance to ask any questions about your particular circumstance so that, you know, we can make sure that you're getting the support that you need, that you are, you know, able to move forward. Just so it's not one sided. Right. I like building community. I like hearing from you guys. And I'll have a couple of giveaways too on that, so make sure you check it out. The link below again is either in my bio or below this video. Hope to see you then. See you guys tomorrow. Take care.
