When You Got to Dig Deep To Keep Moving Forward

Sean Buttner quit a stable job, moved to California with help from a friend named Dave, and built a business while getting certified as a high-performance coach. He argues that knowing who and what you're fighting for beats distraction and procrastination. Three questions guide the way: who is worth fighting for, what mission matters, and what legacy do you want to leave.

Foreign. Good morning, everyone. This is Sean Butner with Start your day with a coach and here's Monday. Welcome. And if you're joining me for the first time, say hi below. Or if you're joining me for the third or many more time, I'm not sure that's a word. Be sure to say hi. What's going on, Dave? And we're just going to jump right into it today, guys. And I wanted to talk about what do you got to do to dig deep to keep moving forward? Because you know, a lot of times when you take a look at the people that are really successful in their areas, whether it's athletics, business, science, teaching, you know, any, any field like welding, it kind of comes down to you need to know where morth. You need to really know why it's worth, you know, digging deep and going through adversity because, you know, sometimes so many people don't really ever think about what's really worth fighting for. And you know, when you don't know what you're fighting for, that's when the distractions win the day. That's when you, you know, Netflix goes on for months and you don't get anything done. That's when you're actively procrastinating. So you know, you got to get something done, but you're doing everything else. You know, you've cleaned your house for the 50th time this day trying to avoid doing that one thing, you know, you got to do. And it's really just you're not tapped into the necessity of why you need to perform. So now I'm thinking about this too, just because I've been, you know, working through some coaching clients and we're getting to the purpose sessions and the certified high performance coaching that I'm certified in. And you know, when you think about what are you really committed to and you know, this has been a crazy last year or so to have started a business, to quit a really stable, high paying job to follow my dream to help people, you know, really learn about themselves and become better leaders, become better professionals, become, you know, more productive people and a little bit kinder, all in the same way with a greater impact in the world. It's been a really scary time the last six months because, you know, we're still reeling from all these different factors out in the world. So and especially here, you know, locally in the United States, you know, with the coronavirus and all sorts of. So how do you, or I've been thinking like, how do I keep motivated? How do I keep showing up. How do I keep doing these morning shows? And it's really because I care and want to help people and want to be a force of a little bit of positivity. And I don't know if I'm doing that or not. I think I said morph. I created a new word. So that's my contribution value add. I'm done, guys. Just kidding. But, you know, really what it comes down to, it's a belief that we can connect, that we can, you know, by constantly thinking about how can we get better at what we do, what we do every day, what we do during the week, that eventually that'll ripple out into a positive influence in the world. So thank you for being on that journey with me. Thank you for struggling, you know, maybe through that. Sometimes when the coffee's a bit low in the morning here, and there's a couple of things that I think through and I tell my clients to think through when it comes to, you know, when you really need to find that. That. That deep source to persevere. Having a hard time with words this morning. How to persevere through adversity or to stay on mission when things get going tough. And the first thing and one of my favorite questions to ask is, you know, what or who is worth fighting for? So who are you role modeling for? Who really relies on you to be successful in what you're doing? Who looks up to you? Who are you leading? How are you modeling behaviors for other people? This is kind of the vein of that question, and it's so powerful because things that I would not do for myself because I'm like, ah, I just disappoint myself. Not a big deal, but I'll disappoint my wife if I don't get this business running. That's a huge thing. I'm not gonna be able to support my family if I don't get the business working or I don't have my career figured out, or I don't, you know, there's reasons outside of myself to really be excellent here, and I'm sure that you have that in your life too, whether that's your career or hobbies or, you know, you're just in the fat leading your family. So how are you role modeling? How are you fighting for them in your quest? Whether that's a mission or project or whatever. The second thing is, like, what. What mission or ideas are actually worth fighting for? If you have a worldview, an idea that, you know, you take a look at democracy, like, that's an idea worth worth fighting for, then, you know, why is that important to you? And it could be that you grew up in an area that did not have, you know, freedom of speech and stuff. So it's really important to you. It could just be that you realize that we can make a change if we fight for the institution that we live under. So, you know, what happens when you don't speak up? What happens when you don't engage politically as a citizen? What happens when you don't show up? Well, that idea could be in jeopardy. So it's an example of something we're fighting for. And then third question I like to ask, my question our clients is, what legacy is worth leaving? You know, one of the most powerful moments in my life was when, you know, you see Dave here. He so graciously allowed me to live for free in his spare bedroom in Oakland for a while. And that decision to leave a stable job at that time to start a business was, you know, the question that really got me motivated after years of him trying to be like, hey, you gotta move to the West Coast. And I'm very thankful for that effort, but. And the big question is, like, if you don't try this now, what would you tell your future kids? That. That story that you were trying to play it safe so you didn't actually follow your dreams? Like, I didn't like that idea at all. And I got to spend time with my cool buddy, so. And got to move out to California, which had been a dream of mine for quite a while, too. So it, like, all these different factors, but, you know, that idea that I was like, I'm going to choose my own adventure. I'm going to do what I think is right, what feels really good, which inspires me, what, you know, helps me, you know, be more in line with what I think I want for my life. And that's powerful. And that got. That overcame the inertia of feeling comfortable, of playing it safe, and be like, I need to take a risk. I need to see where this goes. And I landed on my feet and in ways that I didn't quite imagine would work out. You know, the. The plan was not as grand as what actually happened with getting a job at Apple, with being here, starting a business now, finding my wife, all these. All these great things. So, you know, what legacy is worth fighting for. I love that story a lot more than I'm stuck in a place where I don't feel com. Like, related or I don't feel connected to. That's the word I'm looking for. So thank you, Dave, again. I'm eternally grateful for that act of kindness of letting me move out. Of course. But, you know, so, yeah, who's worth fighting for? What mission or idea is worth fighting for? And then what legacy is worth leaving? So I hope that as you tell your story that you're very proud of the actions you've done. And if you're not, you can still make a change. You can change that right now. So. So what would it take to be living the story that you really want? And I'll leave you guys with that. So thanks again for watching the show. If you have any comments, leave them below. If you have any questions or anything you'd like to, you know, hear talked about in high performance and how you can get even more effective at your job, in your health, with relationships, that kind of stuff, I'd love to, you know, speak to that. So. All right, guys, have a great Monday. Go out there, build your legacy, fight for your mission and your people and make a greater impact in the world today.
