In this episode of the Up Level Podcast, host Sonja Hannus begins with a personal update about her family, her "Heal Your Hormones" coaching community, and the intense phase of life she is navigating as a mother, entrepreneur, and partner of an entrepreneur expanding his business to Sweden. She then moves to the core theme: how women can train effectively when their hormonal balance is disrupted – whether due to irregular or absent menstrual cycles, PCOS, endometriosis, acne, or the aftermath of hormonal contraception. Sonja stresses the importance of first clarifying why one wants to move, aligning exercise goals with life circumstances, and recognizing that training is a stressor that can be either beneficial or harmful depending on overall load. She shares her own evolution from high‑intensity, competition‑focused training to low‑threshold home workouts, daily movement with her children, and short, frequent sessions that fit her busy schedule. Key practical guidance includes: Reducing training intensity and volume when the cycle is missing or highly irregular, prioritising recovery, adequate sleep (8‑9 h), and nutrient‑dense meals with sufficient protein, carbs and fats. Using low‑impact modalities such as walking, gentle strength work, mobility, yoga (especially restorative or Hatha), and Pilates during hormonally vulnerable periods. Tracking menstrual symptoms, energy, heart‑rate variability, and sleep with tools like the Glue app or an Oura ring to detect when the body needs more rest. Tailoring workouts to the four phases of a typical cycle – follicular (light‑to‑moderate cardio, skill work), ovulation (peak performance, higher intensity), early luteal (maintain strength, watch energy), late luteal (short, low‑intensity, focus on recovery), and menstruation (very gentle movement or rest). Highlighting the dangers of excessive high‑intensity training for conditions such as PCOS, estrogen dominance, and cortisol‑driven insulin resistance, and recommending a temporary shift to lighter activity. Emphasising hydration, electrolyte balance, and timing of pre‑ and post‑exercise nutrition. Introducing an Ayurvedic perspective, matching exercise type to dosha (Vata – calming yoga, Pitta – balanced cardio/strength, Kapha – stimulating, heart‑pumping work) and noting that these typologies are optional tools for self‑awareness. Briefly touching on Human Design as another personal framework. Answering three common listener questions about training during menstruation, while on hormonal contraception, and doing high‑intensity work. The episode concludes with a promotion of the deeper "HelioHormones" coaching program, a request for listeners to rate the podcast, and an offer of a free micronutrient guide.
