Its Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And tonight, a local woman and business owner is sharing her story of strength as she battles another round of cancer. As News Channel 3's Alexa Bertola reports, Sue Sanshi is hoping to help other women by bringing knowledge and new technology to Humboldt county.
It was 12 years ago that I thought that my last journey was cancer was done.
Sue Sanchi, a Humboldt native and the owner of the spot at Personal Choice in Eureka, is in her third battle.
With cancer when it reoccurred this summer. What I really thought my first influx is to fight back and to raise awareness because I've been so proactive with health advocacy. I just thought that I knew what was going on.
She says she's realized that the things that she learned 12 years ago have changed. There's new information and new opportunities.
With so much on the forefront with genetic testing, the ability for new diagnostic system, something that my oncologist and I talked about 12 years ago, still hasn't really had the opportunity to come to Humboldt County.
She decided to kick off a campaign start Spa for a Cure and raise funds for a 3D mammography imaging machine for St. Joseph Health.
It's going to increase the detection rate by 40%. It's going to change the callback rate by 40%.
And she's the perfect poster child for this machine. The type of breast cancer that she has is not detected in a mammogram, but doctors caught it early.
So my encouragement to women is check yourself daily, get your mammograms, see your clinicians, and don't put your health care on hold.
Sue says during this entire process, she's really turned to the community and her work for strength. She's undergoing chemo and keeping strong each and every day.
The way that I fight back is to give back.
