You get to choose your happiness and 🤩

In this episode of the "Susie Unshaped" series, Susie Taaffe explores how we can free ourselves from ingrained belief systems, "shoulds," and subconscious autopilot that keep us disconnected from our heart. She contrasts spiritual self‑knowledge with the pull of 3‑D reality, emphasizing the need for tiny, repeatable reminders—post‑its, breaths, or simple mental cues—to bring us back into the present moment. Susie defines the present not as a meditative state but as a split‑second awareness of what we are doing right now, whether it’s drinking coffee, taking a shower, or taking out the trash. She introduces the "gratitude switch," a mental toggle that reframes any task or circumstance with appreciation, thereby shifting our energy and vibration. She explains that the body’s energy system does not differentiate between the object of gratitude; any genuine feeling of thankfulness registers the same beneficial effect. For moments of overwhelming stress, Susie shares the "put it on the shelf" technique: acknowledge the stressor, place it mentally on a shelf, and return to it later when more information or emotional bandwidth is available. Throughout, she stresses the importance of choosing actions that arise from the heart rather than external expectations, encouraging listeners to replace "shoulds" with authentic desires (e.g., choosing a cappuccino over a carrot). The talk concludes with a call to practice these micro‑moments of joy and appreciation in everyday routines, reinforcing that we ultimately choose how we feel.

Hi, welcome to Susie Unshaped. I'm Susie, and here we unshape all the belief systems and shoulds and expectations that we've been placing on ourselves our whole life, some conscious, some unconscious, and they are preventing us from living from our heart and enjoy every day. And the biggest thing I like to like play with is what we know, like, spiritually and in our heart about who we are versus 3D reality. And 3D reality bites you in the— because it is so fast to pull you back into those old patterns and programs and back into the subconscious autopilot and I think that that's the trick, is how to give ourselves little reminders. And like, is it Post-it notes? Is it just to take a breath? Everyone, let's do it. And come back into ourselves, like into— instead of just operating go, go, go, go, go, like coming back within and living in the present. And I know living in the present, it's like, what does that mean? Like, live— yeah, I'm present. It doesn't mean like kumbaya and sitting there meditating. It's actually just taking a split second to be aware of what you're doing, not like fast-forwarding through the rest of the tasks you have today or playing over what happened in the past. It's like the now moment, because the now moment is all that exists. There is no past. The past does not exist. You can bring it into the now moment if you want, um, but it's not serving you. Like, it's not serving you to live in your joy. The now moment is like, it's not gulping your coffee down while you're trying to race out the door. It's, I don't know, maybe investing in a travel mug so that you can actually enjoy your coffee on your way to work, and, and noticing that you're drinking a coffee instead of just jamming it into the routine. It's that split second before you have a shower to just actually be present in the shower and enjoy it instead of racing through it. And so it's just about that split second of awareness before you do anything, and then to see the gratitude and the joy in that task. I know you've probably read a million places, I don't have to do this, I get to do this. And that's switching. That's flipping the gratitude switch. And the gratitude switch is like the key to not living in autopilot and actually enjoying the now present moment. And sometimes you might be like, you might be not great, you might be stressed to the max. Like, I get it, I've been there. I'm there all the time, just to I'm just going to turn my aircon on because it's a bit hot. I'm wearing a jumper. Um, actually, the kids at my daughter's school tease her for saying jumper. They're like, you're wearing your jumper, because it's a US school and I don't think they say jumper in the US. But anyway, um, I digress. Anyway, the now, like the gratitude. Gratitude, if you can turn on gratitude and appreciation, like flip that switch. That is how you like create an abundance mindset. And I'm going to like— I'm going back to like the stress to the max. And like sometimes we are like overwhelmed, nothing feels like it's going right, and we can't see— what's that saying? The The forest for the trees, or the trees for the forest, whatever that's saying. I'm so bad at sayings, you probably know that about me by now. I can't ever get them right. I think it's the way my brain works. But yeah, anyway, don't get them, but it's one of those— can't see the forest, the trees for the forest, or something. You get what I mean. Um, anyway, like, sometimes we need to start really basic. Like, you might wake up in an anxiety panic Just bring it back. Bring it back to, wow, I'm so grateful my pillow's so soft. I'm so grateful, like, this doona feels so warm, or this, like, blanket feels so snuggly. Like, you can bring it back to— like, if you can't even feel that, maybe it's, I'm so grateful that the Earth is still turning. Because my son did an assignment and If the world stops turning, it's not good. Like, that centrifugal force is keeping everything in place, so we don't want the world to stop turning. Like, I'm so grateful my lungs are breathing without me having to ask them. I'm so grateful my heart is beating without me having to do anything. Like, it— when things seem really tough, bring it back, because I'll give you a little, like, shortcut, and that is that Our, like, energy system doesn't know the difference between being grateful for one thing and being grateful for another thing. So if you just feel the gratitude and the appreciation and, like, try and find the joy however you can, it might even be, I'm grateful that the sun is shining, like, I'm grateful it's spring, um, like something that is external to you, but your energy feels the gratitude and the appreciation anyway. So that's my little like tip for how to navigate this 3D world whilst living in the moment and living from our hearts. And the gratitude appreciation trick is the fastest way to get there, like especially like when you're doing a task that is so mundane and so routine that you're like, ugh, I don't want to be doing this. Like, that, that's the part when doing this trick and flipping the switch— and I know it's a cliché, like, I get it, it's a cliché— but I promise you, this is going to change your energy. Like, you might have heard of your vibration and raising your vibration. And living in, uh, is not a good vibration. So it's just that, that split moment to change how you view the situation. And as I said, if you can't view one part of the situation— maybe going through a breakup or something, you feel awful— like, you, your energy system doesn't know if you're being grateful and appreciative of that situation or of your nice soft pillow that's under your head. Or the rom-com you put on and laughed, cried too, that made you feel a bit better. Like, it doesn't know the difference. So that is like a life hack to feeling better now. Like, that's all you need to do to feel better now is to choose it. And if you need to compartmentalize it, I, I did a whole podcast once about putting it on the shelf. And so when I go through really stressful times, what I do is like, I'm aware of the situation, I'm aware of the parts that are causing me stress, I am aware of them, but I don't want to live in that stress. So I am aware of them, I am not like pushing them under the rug, I'm aware of them, but I put them up on the shelf. I know they're there, but then I can keep choosing my— like, each moment and choosing to see the gratitude and catch myself and like, wow, isn't that— isn't that way the sun's coming through those trees really pretty? Isn't that reflection of the rainbow through the door glass like pretty? Like catching those little moments. That thing that's causing me stress is still on the shelf, like it's still there, it's not going away, but I don't have to live in it every single moment of every single day. And then I might need to bring it down off the shelf, and I can sit in that stress and work out the next steps and write, okay, we've got the next plan, and then put it back up there. Because sometimes you don't have all the necessary information to be able to make a decision. And I say this to my kids all the time, especially my middle daughter. She loves to fast forward, like, but what about this? And what about this? It's like, I can't make decisions on that because I don't have enough pieces of data, basically. And so it has to go on the shelf because I can sit in it all day. I can't make a decision. I don't have enough data points to actually be able to come to a decision. So, and I might give it, okay, by this date I've got this going on, or by that date I'll know XYZ more. Then I can pull it down and then with the new information see where we're at. Still can't figure it all out, put it back up, and then wait till you get your next data point. Okay, I am like really digressing, but I'm just sort of like trying to explain how to get through stressful times without living in that stress constantly, because I can promise you it's not doing you any good. And when you're in that like panic, stress, anxiety, you can't like feel the clarity. Do you You know what I mean? You know when you've had those moments of inspiration and it's never when you're like looking in whatever's causing you the stress? Like, you've got to clear that away and clear— or do whatever feels good to you. Like, go for a walk in nature, go down to the beach, go near water, have a bath. Some people do good thinking on the toilet, um, probably because before phones, like, it was like a place where you didn't have any distractions. But I hope you're understanding my point because I am really rambling here. Um, the point is find that moment of joy and appreciation. If you keep like finding and choosing that, the split second, split second, split second, like before your shower, even if you're in a rush, it doesn't take you long. It's just, okay, I'm going to be present, I'm going to enjoy this shower. Like I'm gonna really enjoy it, and then notice like the warm water flowing over you. Like how good does that feel? And just it's it's instead of racing through life, it's just that split second to choose to be aware and to choose how you feel. So that's pretty much it. Like we get to choose how we feel. I know I know that seems crazy, and it literally is as. Simple as I am choosing to feel that appreciation of XYZ, whatever it is you're choosing. And then you train yourself, you train yourself to look for those moments of joy and appreciation. Like, I mean, in the mundane things. I mean, when you're putting out the trash, like taking the bins out to the bin collection. And that's sort of— that was one of my first things, and I'd be like, oh, Why do I always have to take the bins out? Well, because there's no one else to take the bins out. Well, when my kids were little, um, I still take the bins out. Who are we kidding? They don't take them out. But like, I would, as I was taking them out, I would catch myself in the, uh, and then I'll be like, okay, I'm gonna reframe that and find something around me. Oh my God, but the sun looks beautiful through those palm trees. Oh my God, but I can smell that jasmine scent. Spring is here. Like Find something to— I'm appreciative that I have bins to take out. Some people don't have bins to take out. Some people don't have trash collection that comes and takes the trash away for them. Like, you can find it if you choose. All you have to do is choose. Choose to find it. That's it. And then you can start choosing. Once you're choosing to find those moments of joy, then what you do is you start choosing to do the things that you want to do, like that you— that make you feel good. Like, not what you should do. We've covered shoulds a lot before, but not what you should do. Shoulds are an expectation, like an old outdated belief system. A should doesn't come from your heart. Should does not come from your heart, and you might even find that the shoulds are the ones calling you that causing you the uh because you don't want to do them, and you probably don't even know why you don't want to do them. Like I should eat the carrot because I've been told that's healthy for me, but I really want a cappuccino. Have the cappuccino. Like, your body wants a cappuccino, your heart wants a cappuccino. It's going to light you up with joy. Or are you just gonna like mundanely chomp through the carrot? If you want the carrot, that's great, but we've got to start tapping into our hearts and seeing what we truly want, not what we should be doing. So there we are, that's today. Today was put it on the shelf if it's worrying you, find the bits of joy in the mundane, take that split second to enjoy the routine of your life, like be aware of the coffee that you're drinking, be aware of the shower that you're taking in the beautiful warm water. And then the last point is to choose what you want. Seems crazy, doesn't it? It's that simple. But anyway, it was lovely to talk to you again. I haven't been here for a while. I've been doing a million different exciting projects, which I'll tell you about later. Okay, love you. Bye.
