Suzanne Noble fell asleep on her vibrator and woke up uncomfortable. She uses the mishap to argue that masturbation is essential for pleasure and self-knowledge, especially for older women, and that talking openly about it improves sex with partners. Her practical tip: keep it somewhere safe.

I woke up this morning very, very early because I'd fallen asleep on top of my vibrator and it was really uncomfortable and it woke me up. I would definitely not recommend falling asleep on top of your vibrator, but you know, sometimes as older women we're so exhausted that, yeah, we're not even aware of this kind of stuff. We might not even have finished. And that led me to think about self-pleasure. Solo sex, whatever you want to call it, it's one of the great joys of life. And so much of the best sex I've had has been with myself. Very rarely disappoints me. Well, sometimes, or sometimes I'm just too tired. And but you know what, what goes on in our brain, being able to express that with ourselves and enjoy ourselves in that way is one of the great pleasures in life. And I think really if we don't know ourselves, especially as women, it's unlikely that we're going to be able to tell anybody else what turns us on. So it's important that we do these things. I know at my age it wasn't something that we discussed. I suspect it's still not something that very many people discuss, but I think it's important that we do discuss it and that we're not ashamed of it, and that in fact we do more of it, because the more we know, the more we are able to Explore that pleasure with others, and like I said, tell them what turns us on. And, but just one thing, if you do get on with yourself, um, try to put your vibrator in a place where you're not falling asleep on top of it because it's super uncomfortable.
