A guide to post-date texting: send a safety-check text right after, a mid-week message referencing something from the date, then ask about weekend plans by Thursday. If there's no chemistry, say so clearly and kindly on the spot.

First date rules. I think it doesn't matter whether you're an old bird like me or whether you're a younger person, there are still some rules when it comes to how you behave after your first date. For me, if I've had a really good time, I do typically send a text after the first date to just indicate that it's been really fun and kind of leaving the door open to say, "Yeah, let's see each other again." Nice also to receive a message from the other person that says, "Hey, did you get home safely?" Even if you're an oldie like me and you think, "Of course she got home safely." Then 2 or 3 days later after that, sort of towards the middle of the week, it's really nice to get what is like a refresher text to just say, "Hey, how's your week going? What's been happening?" Maybe a reference to something that happened on the date. And then typically by Thursday, Friday at the very latest is, "What are you doing on the weekend?" Which for me is that signifier that, hey, I want to hang out with you, I want to know what you're doing on the weekend. That's the kind of door opener if that's what you're interested in. Things didn't go so well and you don't have any plans to see them again, I tend to like to just get that over and done with actually on the date itself, which is, "Well, it was really nice getting to know you, but maybe let's keep it in the friend zone," or just like, "Yeah, nice to know you, or, but I wasn't really feeling the vibe."
