I have two long marriages behind me of 15 and 20 years respectively. Most of my adult life was spent as a husband, but in many ways I was not a good husband. I spent a lot of time thinking about myself and my desires and my needs and things I wanted to do without really considering my wives. And if I'm to go into a third relationship— I'm in an open relationship at the moment with Suzanne Noble from this parish— and if I'm to go into the third relationship, I really have to go into it prepared to rethink the way that I behave within a marriage or a relationship or with other women, um, how I treat other women. And although I have my entire adult life, I think, tried to be a new man, uh, open to women and their rights and desires and needs, I think Thinking something in the abstract is very different to actually implementing it, and that's where I've been less good. And I would hope that if it comes to a third relationship, that I would not make the same mistakes again. And that is an important point to make, that when you go into a relationship You must not allow the baggage that you carry with you to weigh you down, to make it so that you make the same mistakes again. Um, and it very often— it is that awareness of yourself that is the thing that will help you to move into a new relationship. And at my age, uh, I can't really afford to fuck it up again, to be honest. Um, and there's always a danger of that, but that danger can be decreased if you actually work on yourself. You find out what your background has done to you, what your upbringing has done to you, and how that has made you into the person you are. That is an important first step on being able to conduct a new relationship on a new basis as a new man.
