Suzanne Noble discusses why older adults are increasingly choosing open relationships and single-ish arrangements instead of traditional monogamy. Boomers raised with strict relationship norms are now seeking more flexible setups, though they face real obstacles on dating apps and generational misunderstandings about what they want.

We talk a lot at Sex Advice for Seniors about non-traditional relationships because at our age, especially as we're past having kids, they've left home, a lot of us are able to look at relationships differently and think about what it is that we actually want. It could be that we don't actually want to be in a relationship, or we want to be, as I've often described myself, single-ish, having somebody that I can hang out with, enjoy, spend time with, have some emotional connection without living with them. Similarly, I'm not a massive fan of monogamy, and I know that there are others out there like me who don't think that monogamy suits them or have been in relationships where it's been open and just found that that's a more preferable way of, of being in a relationship. But of course, the thing is that this is all quite new when you get to be an older person. There's lots of apps and things out there for younger people who want to have alternative relationships, but when you get older, certainly what I've discovered is that when you go on these apps, sometimes it just says there's absolutely nobody around that meets your criteria, and it is challenging. I don't know how to solve it, to be honest. I mean, I I suspect, you know, all of this, eventually we're all gonna end up living in a society where people have much more freedom, more flexibility, they are more open-minded when it comes to relationships. But I always feel like our age, the boomer age, is kind of stuck in the middle. There's— we grew up in traditional ways, and now we may want to operate in non-traditional ways, and it's not that easy. But yeah, I think that there is a growing awareness, especially as we age, that we can be in the relationships that we want to be in, but finding that ideal relationship, well, that may be pretty tough.
