What does it mean to be in a negotiated relationship? I suspect as the cost of living crisis escalates here in the UK and our heating bills go up by 100%, many women, and not just younger women, will be considering entering into a negotiated relationship. This is a relationship typically where the man pays for certain things in your life. In exchange for services and going out for dinner and having some sort of companionship. Could be that he pays your utility bills, it could be he takes you out shopping, for nice dinners, to the theater, all sorts of lovely things that you wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. And yes, you provide things to him in exchange. And typically these relationships were often between older men and younger women who wanted to be seen with somebody younger and attractive on their arm. But more and more, as we discovered in a podcast that we recorded recently with a woman called Joy, it's not just younger women who are doing this, it's older women too. Older women who, because they have no safety net, have had to resort to entering into these sorts of negotiated relationships with men typically their own age or older who would like to have some fun and are willing to pay for it through perhaps, as I said before, paying your utility bills or your personal trainer or whatever it else it happens to be. And as the cost of living crisis really kicks in this winter, I wonder how many women of all ages will be thinking about negotiated relationships and whether that's a way to get to stay warm.
