Hello, my beautiful friend, and welcome to the Mind Body Alignment podcast. I'm your host, Tessa Romero, and also your coach. I'm here to teach you powerful skills and tools to not only know who you are, but how to become exactly who you want to be with a mindset that finally supports you. I'm so grateful that you're here. Let's get started. New level of devotion. Who dis? It's your best friend. Your mindset coach tells you. Tessa Romero, stepping up, showing up to the podcast, that's what I told myself I really wanted to focus on this year. Was consistently pouring into the podcast. And, you know, I just gotta say, I'm really proud of myself for doing the dang thing. Okay, but this week's episode, we are talking about your mindset and your feelings. It's a very common question that I get asked in terms of, you know, how does mindset work with feelings? Because we have feelings and they're valid and they're meant to be felt. And then sometimes people get a little defensive, like, I'm just opposed to feeling things, and I'm so not. If you've ever worked with me, you know, I'm a huge advocate for feeling your feelings. All feelings are meant to be felt. But I want to really help you because I know not everyone's worked with me, obviously. So I'm going to help you out here. When it comes to building an empowered mindset through any feeling that you have, this is about to be really magical. I hope you're as excited as I am. So, number one, let's consider our feelings. Where do they come from? Ask yourself that. Where do my feelings come from? I would love. I would literally love to know your answer to that question. I'm going to have to do a poll on my Instagram asking where your feelings come from. But anyway, let's dive into it a little bit more, because your feelings come from your thoughts. Thoughts create feelings. This might feel a little bit triggering. And remember, everything that I say here, everything that I share here, is not to trigger you. It is because I love you. And these are all things, truly, that I wish someone would have told me, right? Someone would have shared a little bit louder so that I could have found it. But honestly, now that I'm in the position that I'm in, I'm really grateful that I didn't hear it from anyone else, because I got to learn it for myself and now I get to share it with you guys moving forward. But truly, your thoughts create feelings, circumstances. This is the part that might sound triggering, so. Ooh. Hold your breath. Bear with me. Just kidding. Don't hold your breath. Teach your body that it's safe. Keep breathing. Keep breathing through this as I tell you that circumstances do not create feelings. Other people do not make you feel a certain way. I know. We're still breathing together. We love each other. This is a safe place. No one outside of you gets to decide how you feel about yourself, about your life, about your circumstances. No one outside of you gets to determine that. You get to determine that. So when we understand, like, okay, my feelings are coming from me, that's like, one great big giant leap into empowerment. Like, you are basically jumping off the freaking cliff. Like, okay, you know my feelings are coming from me. Turns out they're not coming from you. You don't make me mad. And if you're like, oh, but they do make me mad, I totally get it, girlfriend. I lived by that for a very long time. That could have been my life motto. You make me mad. That could have been my life motto for a very long time. And I've told you this several times. If someone would have come up to me and said, tessa, no one makes you mad, I really. I would have said, you make me mad. You, right here. You're doing it right now. You're making me mad right this second. How are you going to tell me that no one makes me mad? And then I would have continued on to never talk to them again. You know, use my really good skill set of ignoring and avoiding and maybe even punch them in the face. Lash out in a little bit of anger. Who knows? Who knows what Tessa five years ago would have done? But Tessa today does not do those things because I understand. I have this incredible superpower to change my perspective on a dime. I can flip it. I can change it. I could rearrange it. I can change my perspective as many times as I want to, so long as I'm willing to say things like, I could be wrong. This is what I think, but I could be wrong. Staying open to new perspectives instead of this is the fact. So. So really, we need these foundational truths that thoughts are not facts. Thoughts are not facts. So no matter how strongly you feel about a certain perspective, it's not the only perspective. It's not a fact. It could be more true, but we are not limited in our perspectives. And hopefully, you continue allowing yourself to expand your perspectives, just like I do as well. And I know how hard that can feel at times. Totally. So, anyway, your thoughts create your feelings, your circumstances Other people do not create your feelings, your thoughts do. But you also have to understand this very important part in that relationship between your thoughts and your feelings. Because maybe you're like, oh, great, I've just been creating all these feelings of depression, anxiety, worthlessness, hopelessness, helplessness, let's see, exhaustion, irritability, anger. I've been creating all of that. What's wrong with me? And then you go into the shame storm, right? We're attacking ourselves. We're like, oh, I'm such a screw up, I suck, blah, blah, blah. Which like, ironically creates more of the feelings you don't want to experience. You're not going to feel awesome telling yourself, I'm such a screw up, of course I did this wrong. You're going to feel more of those low vibration feelings. But it goes to prove that your thoughts create feelings. So let's look at it as instead of, you know, what's wrong with me? How come I've been doing this to myself? Blah, blah, blah. One, you are doing the best you can at all times. At all times. You are doing what you know how to do. You're doing the best you can to your mental and physical capacity. I love you. Right where you're at. Right where you're at, I believe is right where you're meant to be. And when you're meant to grow, you will. When you're meant to gain that new perspective and step into another version of yourself, you will. So be kind, be gracious with yourself because you're truly doing a great job. And just the fact that you're listening to this podcast and guys, I don't share easy stuff on this podcast. Like sometimes I'm like, wow, I don't know if I want to read the comments or reviews or anything like that. I honestly just don't. I'm like, you know, we don't need to know because you just never know what you're gonna get. But anyway, my point in this, when we're considering, like our thoughts, creating feelings, and we're like, okay, great, I've been creating all these feelings inside myself. You have to understand, and this is the science behind it, you are only conscious of 5%. 5% of your thoughts are on your conscious level and 95% are below the conscious level. So you have upwards of 60,000 thoughts a day. Do you really think you're conscious to all 60,000 of those thoughts a day? No, absolutely not. But in the subconscious, underneath that, underneath the conscious level, those thoughts are still happening. Your mind is taking in the things that hears in the background that the things that you're observing you don't pay any mind to. Well, it made a connection to that. Your mind loves to make predictions. It loves to be right. It loves. Well, to think it's right. It loves to make connections. Oh, this is happening. So it means this, this is what I'm saying. Or it loves to feel like it's right. It's wanting to make connections, it's wanting to make predictions. Your mind is a prediction making machine. So you always have all of these thoughts. Now, 5% is what you're consciously aware of. 95% is operating below the conscious awareness. That doesn't mean you can't change the 95%. You can change the 95%. Totally. Absolutely. You can. Reprogramming. You've been programmed to think one way. Now you're going to reprogram yourself to think another way. Super awesome. And in turn, you're going to reprogram your body to feel a different way. It's incredible. All of this is so incredible. So, so when you experience these feelings of anger, frustration, irritation, exhaustion, fatigue, self doubt, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, when you're experiencing these feelings, you don't need to just go to this place. The thought of, oh my gosh, I'm doing again, what's wrong with me? I'll never get this figured out because how are you gonna feel when you think that about yourself? You're gonna feel worse. You're going to feel worse. So when we observe like, oh, I'm feeling fearful, I'm feeling doubtful, I'm feeling insecure, I'm feeling judgmental, insecure, angry, you acknowledge the feeling is there without trying to attack yourself for feeling that way in the first place, for creating that feeling. Because that subconscious mind is working too. And it has the power to create feelings inside of us as well. So don't look at every feeling as something that you control. I do not believe that we control every single thought and every single feeling because the 95% is happening behind, behind the scenes. I don't know if you guys can hear my kids running upstairs, but that's happening too. Anyway, so we want to, we want to feel responsible and in control of the 5%. What am I intentionally choosing to think about this circumstance. And that will create feelings that you want to experience. You're still going to have feelings where you feel times that you feel low. You're still going to have times that you feel tired. You're still going to have times that you feel scared and doubtful and that's okay, because all feelings are meant to be felt. So this episode, I really wanted to dedicate it to how our mindset and feelings can be beautiful together. Even if we're feeling low, we can have an empowered mindset about the feelings. I'm feeling really low. I'm feeling really insecure. I'm feeling really fearful. How can I help myself? Not what's wrong with me. Of course I feel this way. I can never just keep on a good streak of things. I always have to let things fall apart. I always go back here. None of that. It's just, oh, this feeling's here. Observe it without judgment. You're human. You're human. You're an emotional creature. Your emotions are enriching your human experience. Can you imagine your life without emotions? The good, the bad, the hard, the exciting, whatever. Can you imagine your life without any emotions? That would be awful. That would be awful. So look at your. Look at your feelings as friends, and I'll do an episode next coming up about talking with our feelings, because that is truly, like, a little tool that I love to do for myself and teach my clients how to do too, like talking with your feelings. And. And it's very, very powerful. But right now, understanding, like, okay, my thoughts create my feelings. I don't control every thought I have, but I can learn to become more aware of the thoughts that I have access to. Becoming more aware to those thoughts gives you insight to why you feel the way that you feel and why you're doing what you're doing, why you have this view of yourself in the first place. But if you're shaming yourself and criticizing yourself and beating yourself up, well, you're not staying open to learning about yourself and becoming aware of the thoughts and the feelings that are contributing. So you are the empowered individual that experiences the feelings. You're the conscious being that uses emotions to enrich your human experience. It's nothing for you to fear. Emotions are vibrations. It's energy in motion. What do you have to fear? You do not have to fear it. We need to control our thoughts about the feelings. All feelings are meant to be felt. That's why they're called feelings. But this is a very important part about your mindset and feelings and how we can get them working together is to understand that feelings are messengers, not leaders. They're messengers. They're valuable. We want them. We want them to show up and teach us something. Tell us something. Give us some insight to something we might be missing. Your intuition. Brilliant. Don't ever shut that down, let it talk to you, but remain empowered. I'm still the one that gets to make the choices. I'm still the one that gets to decide what I think about this feeling. Is this the feeling that limits me or is this the feeling that catapults me forward? Is this the feeling that tells me to stop and so I stop? Or is this the feeling that says, I feel a little unsure about this because we've never done it before. And you say, wow, I'm doing something that I've never done before. I'm growing. That's just a perspective. See how we can control our thoughts given the feelings that we're experiencing. And we will create different feelings. What we often do is we feel tired. So what do we do? One, we identify it, which we've been working very hard not to do that right, friends? We're working on that. The I am statements, I am tired. No, you're not. You feel tired. And there's a big difference in saying I am tired and I feel tired. So make the simple shift. The feeling is still there. It's still valid, it's still true. But it's a feeling, not who you are. It's not the leader. It's the feeling. I feel tired. Great. Now you know how you feel. What are you going to do about it? Are you going to rest? Is your body feeling tired because it needs movement? And your mind is what needs the stillness. Your mind needs the electronics off, the lights dim, the. The noises down. Like, is that what your mind needs? But your body needs stretching, yoga, dancing, movement. We can do that. We can say, gosh, I feel tired. This is what I'm going to do about it. So feelings are messengers, not leaders. You are the leader. A feeling comes up, maybe anger comes up. What is that feeling here to tell you? You're the one that gets to get bury open with your feelings. You're the one that gets to hold space for your feelings so that they can deliver the message to you that you need. They're here to teach you something, tell you something. It's not something to fear. So how can you start holding more space for the feelings that you have? Ask yourself questions. You're not going to identify with the feeling. I am tired. I am angry. No, I feel angry. Gosh, why do I feel so angry right now? You choose to observe without judgment. You choose to get curious instead of furious. These are your choices that you're making. You're so empowered to do so because you are the leader. You are the leader. So Another great example of this, of, you know, mindset and feelings working truly together. And one not limiting, the other is, let's say you feel angry. Your kids do something, and you have this thought that they should not be doing that, and now you feel angry. So your kids did not make you mad. Your thoughts about your kids made you mad. Your kids did not make you mad. Your thoughts about what they're doing made you mad. It's you. It's you. And that's a good thing. Sit with that. It's me. And it's a great thing that it's me. Because I can help myself. I'm not waiting on anyone or anything else to change before I start doing something different, before I start allowing myself to change. I don't want to feel angry when my kids are playing. I don't want to feel angry when my kids are trying to help. I don't want to feel angry when my kids are doing what they know how to do. That's not the way that I want to feel. And so what can I do? Well, if I blame them, the controls in their power. I need you to change so that I don't feel angry when you do these things. So just don't ever do that thing again to better protect me and the way that I feel about it and what I think about what you're doing. Please just don't ever do that again. Is that realistic? Is that realistic to expect our kids to never do something again? Because we are putting all the control and power in their hands instead of looking at it as, hold on a second. This is the way I feel. If it's the way I feel, then there's something I can do about it. You don't control your kids. You don't control what they think, what they say, what they do. You do get to influence you. You're a very powerful influence in their life, but you're not a controller. They are their own people. And I'm big believer. You know, you catch more. You've catch more bees with honey than you do with vinegar. So where's the honey? How can we be sweet? How can we draw our kids into us to get them working with us? Because the vinegar, that's not working. That's not working. So anyway, when you feel angry, how can you hold space for that? Asking questions, getting curious and understanding that there's something you can do about it? You are not a reaction to your emotions. Your emotions are messengers. All feelings are meant to be felt. That's why they're called feelings. But do you need to do something you're not proud of in order to feel the feeling? No, you do not need to do something that you feel ashamed of, guilty about in order to feel your feelings. You can mentally rehearse. You can recondition yourself. You can prepare yourself for how you plan on handling the feelings of anger moving forward. Because you're sick and tired of allowing your feelings to be the leaders. All along, they've been messengers. They've never been the leader. They've never been the leader. You got reactive. You just acted on the feeling instead of holding space for yourself to actually feel it, process and be who you want to be in it. And I know that sounds really hard because I've been through it too. I've been the wife that yells at my husband. I've been the wife that ignores him. I've been the mom yelling at my kids. And I don't want to do that. I don't want to be that way as a wife, as a mother, as a woman. I just don't want that for myself. And I truly believe that we can help ourselves through it. More than stepping into a victim mentality of how it's their fault and complaining about the circumstances and justifying our behaviors, we don't have to do that. We can rise above that. We can think greater than the way we feel. We can think greater than the circumstances we're currently in. Change is the only constant. So when you allow your feelings to be what they are. Messengers. And you remember, I am the empowered being that gets to think greater than this feeling, that gets to help myself through this feeling. How am I gonna help myself? What am I gonna do different? Yep, here comes the feeling of anger. Okay, it's here. How am I gonna help myself? And getting crystal clear on what's no longer acceptable for you. Have you ever been in a circumstance and you made a very. A tough choice because you found that XYZ is just unacceptable? I worked with a client before, and she had told me that I, um. Her husband started going to the bar, and it was just completely unacceptable to her. So she said she was going to leave. But they had been through a lot together. I mean, totally. They both had their own, like, toxic traits and. And abusive behaviors and patterns within the relationship. But it was just that step into him going to the bar that she was like, unacceptable, not gonna. Not gonna put up with it. And she held her ground there. So what I think is amazing is as soon as you think this is unacceptable, I'm not going to Entertain this behavior. I'm not going to allow this into my life, into my family. You do something about it, even if it feels hard. So we can feel angry and choose, choose to acknowledge the feelings there and do something that doesn't look like anger. You can do that. I can do it. I do it and you can too. Is it gonna take work? Is it gonna take a lot of intention? Yes. But you're designed to be intentional. You're designed to be conscious and aware of your life and what you're creating and who you're being and loving who you are. Do you really think we're meant to hate ourselves? Do you really think we're meant to just live with the feelings of overwhelm, exhaustion, stress, anxiety, depression and do nothing about it? Say, oh, it's just, you know who I am? No, no. It's the way you feel. And you're the best person to do something to help yourself when you feel that way, because they're your feelings. They're your feelings. So when you feel angry, you can choose to do something that does not look like anger. You feel angry and you can choose to bring those shoulders down, open up your chest, control your movements. We can't control every feeling, we can't control every thought. But we can stay conscious in the moment, in the circumstances, realize how we are feeling, what's really going on, slow ourselves down, drop the shoulders, open the chest, relax your jaw, open your palms. Right? Everything that we used to do that looked very aggressive because we felt angry, we clenched our fist, we clenched our jaw, we would raise our shoulders up and kind of like round them in. Like we would get this very defensive nature and stance about us. And what was it doing? It was feeding the anger. It was feeding the anger. The anger became the leader instead of the message. But really what's interesting about anger is anger is a secondary emotion. Anger comes up, steps in to try and protect you. Do you really need protecting from your two year old? Your two year old's tantrum, do you need protecting from that? No. No. You're safe. You're the best person to help your 2 year old in the middle of that tantrum. You're the best person to keep both of you safe and truly accessing a new perspective of that tantrum can change everything for you. Because thoughts create feelings. My child is having a hard time. This is not to upset me. They are doing the best they can and so am I. I'm ready to change the pace. I am slow, steady and constant. This is something we can Work through. This is a hard moment, and I'm ready to move into our great day together. This is building trust. This is building connection within our relationship. All of those new perspectives create different feelings. But when you have the thoughts, I can't handle this. This is so unfair to me. He shouldn't be screaming. He always does this. All he does is scream. Well, now, that's what your what your eyes are looking for, because your eyes see what your mind is looking for. So instead of paying attention to all the times that your child's not doing that, your mind is emphasizing all the times that your child is. And it will truly feel like it's all they do because it's all you're looking for. We could say it about your spouse, too. You're looking for the things that they don't do and missing all of the things that they do. That sucks. It sucks for them to be on the receiving end of that, and it sucks for you to be on the experiencing side of that. So what I'm asking you to do is use your feelings as messengers, but remain the empowered leader. What is anger here to tell you? What is judgment here to tell you? Insecurity. What is it here to tell you? Joy. What is joy? Fulfillment, Accomplishment, Energy? All the in even the really amazing feelings that you have, what are they here to tell you? Hey, we love this. Wow. I find a lot of enjoyment in this. I want this to be a part of my daily life. I'm going to make more time for this in my life. Your feelings are so valuable and I want you to feel them. I just don't want you to become them. They're not the leader. You're the leader. So a really great way for you to start getting clear on this is you can get out a pen and piece of paper. Journaling truly is amazing. Even these journaling exercises I share with you guys on the podcast, it's amazing for slowing down your mind, getting clear on what it is that you think, and reconditioning your mind to think a new way about it. If you really want your mind to adopt something, write it, write it, speak it, be it, feel it, write it out. So on. With a pen and piece of paper, I want you to write out the feelings that you commonly experience on a daily basis. Just bullet point them. How can you bullet point, list those feelings I commonly feel? I mean, what do you tell yourself? I feel tired. Maybe. Maybe you're still in the land of I am feelings. So examine your I am statements. What I am statements are you using that? Have a feeling in there. I am exhausted. I am tired. I am unfulfilled. I am helpless. I am hopeless. Okay? Those are all feelings. So again, a very crucial step for you to make is the simple I feel statement instead of I am. Your feelings are not who you are. They're not who you are. So call them what they are, feelings. You can still feel them. You can still validate them. You can still do something to help yourself through them without becoming the feeling and getting stuck there and creating more of it, Especially if something that you don't want to be experiencing. So list out the feelings that you have that you commonly have on a daily basis and just be honest with yourself. I feel overwhelmed. I feel exhausted. I feel touched out. I feel irritated. I feel resentful. Whatever feelings it is that you really want to change your perspective on, and that could be good feelings too, because when you have a feeling of silly, like I feel silly, do you shut that down? Does that feel so uncomfortable for you that you just shut it down? You're like, no, no, no, no, I can't feel silly. I need to stop this behavior. That. Why? Why do you not allow yourself to feel joyful, silly, excited, happy, fulfilled, accomplished, successful for extended periods of time? It's like the good feeling comes and you shut it down. You're like, oh, no, no, no, that's not safe to feel. Let me. Let me get right out of that. This is so uncomfortable. I'm gonna get out of it. Even though it's good, even though it's a great feeling, we fear it. Like, I gotta. I gotta get outta here. So even write those good feelings out. Especially if you have a hard time feeling them and allowing yourself to embrace them and create more of them, write those out. So write them out, bullet point. And then right next to that, I want you to expand. So make sure there's about, like a line or two between each bullet. And then I want you to expand and just ask yourself, what message is this feeling trying to tell me? Trying to deliver to you. What is the message this feeling is trying to deliver? Because remember, feelings are messengers, not leaders. So when you're willing to take the empowered position, I am the leader, you are the messenger. And you tell your feelings. You're the messenger, Tell me your message. And I am the leader. I'm the one that gets to decide what I do about it, what I do with that information. So you're gonna have this feeling. Come, whatever, write it in your journal. I feel blank. Ask yourself, what is this Feeling trying to tell me what is the message of this feeling? What messages this feeling trying to deliver. However you want to ask that question and write it out, maybe the feeling of judgment is common for you. What message is judgment trying to deliver? I feel insecure in the way that I'm living my life. I want that for me. I want to see myself step outside my comfort zone. The feeling of judgment really has nothing to do with anyone else but you. That's. And I'm telling you this from personal experience, too, because you could look at someone succeeding, doing the thing that you want to do, and you could say, wow, they're showing me what can be done. If they can do it, I can do it. I'm so glad that I have their example. But sometimes we take a different approach. Well, it's just easier for them, and they can have. Of course they can have it, and I can't. And when we take that approach, in that perspective, we feel limited, we feel resentful, we feel judgmental. Instead of creating good feelings. I'm grateful for their example. It feels so good to see just how much can be done in this life and the way that we can live and what's possible. If I didn't see them living this way, I don't think I would push myself outside of what's comfortable. I needed someone to show me what can be done. And I'm so glad that she's here to do that, whatever it is. So write out, what message is this feeling here to deliver? Fulfillment, joy, gratitude. What message is this feeling here to deliver? I am in alignment with the way I want to live my life. I enjoy doing things that I say I'm going to do. That's why I feel. I feel accomplished. Because this feeling is coming to tell me, hey, you love doing things that you say you're gonna do. You love following through. That's good. And then right under that, you can ask yourself, how am I gonna create more of this? How am I gonna create more? Or how, like, of the good feelings, or what am I gonna learn from this message? If it's a feeling of, like, jealousy, resentment, judgment, anger, exhaustion, overwhelm, stress. If it's one of those feelings that you don't want to create more of. You look at that message that you believe the feeling's trying to deliver to you, and you ask yourself, what am I going to do with this information? Or how can I help myself? Ask yourself that last question that can open your mind up to more solutions. Where do I want to go from Here, what's the next step? How do I help myself? A question like that, that just opens you up to see, where do we go from here? How do I step into the role of leadership so that this feeling understands? I'm just the messenger. Teach your feelings. You're the messenger, I'm the leader. I trust you to deliver the message. And you can trust me to lead us to safety. You can trust me to lead us in life in the direction that we want to go. I'm about to share a bunch of testimonials over on my Instagram because they just came flooding in for the January giveaway. So check out the journaling course. It's the course that keeps on giving. Every Monday I send you an email to continue expl expanding and enriching your journaling practice. And once a month we have a live group coaching session together so you can come learn from me directly. Ask me your question. Ask me your questions. Let's learn from one another's circumstances and bring it all back to how we can journal through it. So I love being a creator. Just for you. I hope this episode served you and let's keep on making 2023 the year that we are in complete alignment with who we want to be. I'll see you later. Thank you for joining me on this video episode. If you enjoyed the podcast, don't forget to subscribe and share it. I love spreading the message of how positivity can come in so beautifully to help you through your journey of self discovery and healing. I'm cheering for you. I believe in you and I'll talk to you really soon.
