3 Nov 2023 · 23 min
Tessa Romero explains how trigger words like "nap trapped" sabotage positive thinking. She recommends swapping negative language for empowered alternatives like "nap wrapped" to reprogram your thoughts and feelings. The shift works because negative associations override positive affirmations.

Oh, my sweet friends. We're back. We're back. And I've been doing a lot of thinking about being a mommy and I hope you have been too, because there is a difference in choosing to be a mother versus choosing to be a mommy. And I would tell you that being a mommy in today's motherhood and the way that it's presented is quite the rebellious act that I personally hope we do more of. So you are a mommy. I want you claiming that and to know that the new Mommy M O M M Y Mindset course is so soon. I truly am thrilled for this. MOMMY stands for an acronym. In this course we're going to go through five modules. It's going to be Motherly Opportunity, Mindful, Magnify, and yes. And inside of those five modules, what we're doing is reprogramming your mind with the practical tools that you need and skills to be building on a daily basis for you to show up as a mommy in your everyday life, in your home, with the kids you have right now. You've heard me say this so many times that nothing needs to change before you do. And this is so true. And the mommy Mindset course is going to teach you how to change your mind, to change your mindset, to enrich it and build it and have this growth in the exact season of motherhood that you are in right now, rather than waiting and accepting the narrative that all mothers are exhausted, all mothers are overwhelmed, and we're all overstimulated and we're all going through way too much and it's our kids faults, right? Because they make us yell and they make us procrastinate and they make us late to our appointments and we expect ourselves to be yelling and we expect ourselves to hit and slam things and get aggressive, intense and intense. And we expect ourselves to do these things. And inside of the Mommy Mindset course, I promise you, we're going to break down the lessons that you need inside of the modules that are prepared for you to be able to reevaluate your expectations, to truly see the opportunities that are presented to you every single day with the people that you have right now. Because you and I both know that your family is a blessing. And I'm not saying being a mommy is an easy thing. We know that there's still caring for our home and caring for our family and caring for ourselves. And I'd argue that you could see how the vision of being a mommy is much different than the vision of being a mother. And that is because of Unintentional programming. We all go through unintentional programming and that's why I'm even more excited about the Mommy Mindset course because it's our opportunity to go back and intentionally program our mind to align with the mommy that we want to be. I'm very much looking forward to this course to appear to you so soon. We will have a very special introductory offer where you can coach with me for five weeks and a beautiful group of mommies that are acquiring similar tools and skills and mindsets right alongside you. So we can be seeing how we're all implementing this right alongside each other in our everyday lives, get ideas from each other and experience coaching in a beautiful way directly about motherhood and how to be a mommy in today's motherhood. So stay tuned for that. It's going to be so beautiful. And I'll have the details available to you for the course deliverables because there will be beautiful video modules, powerful PDF material that you can keep for life, revisit over and over and over again and work through your workbook at your own pace or right alongside us. The course is designed to be in a five week period and you're welcome to take longer through it, take your time through it and as we learn any new skill and tool, it's going to take pretty practice, patience and this willingness, this excitement, enthusiasm to implement it. So it's going to be so good. And we'll also have audio files this time, which is a new little perk for us. And inside of the audio file, the purpose of that is for you to download the audio file, which is the audio from the video module. So that way you can listen to it while driving in your car or out on a walk with your kids. And maybe you just don't want your phone out to be watching the video module. You can just listen to it, take in the goodness while on a walk or on a flight or wherever you are. I'm extremely excited for this. I hope you can feel my enthusiasm about it. It is definitely has been a labor of love on very many, very many terms of that. I've cried several times creating this course out of joy and out of pure pain. It felt like to be able to create this. So I, I know it's going to make a huge difference in your home and in your life and I'm very excited about it. So today's Episode now that I've told you what's coming and what you can expect in the Mommy Mindset course, today's episode we're actually talking about this idea of Nap Trapped. I talked about it recently on my Instagram stories over there, if you want to follow me there. We talk about mindset on the Daily and my stories, and I love to post reels for you that further progress your mindset and enrich your perspective. Now, the whole idea of Nap Trapped came up because I posted a mindset swap reel where I show five negative thoughts and I swap them over to positive thoughts thoughts. And if anything, my Instagram account is known for mindset swaps. I would. I would say that's why. And I did a. I did a mindset swap about rocking Drew in our. What is it? Baby chair? Baby glider recliner. It's not even a. It is a recliner. Okay. Anyway, rocking him to sleep. He's now asleep on my lap and I was about to go move him to the crib and then the thoughts come, right? He's just going to wake up as soon as I put him to sleep. And I never get to do anything for myself while trying to put him to sleep because I'm forced to be in here. And why won't he just fall asleep on his own? This is so unfair. You know, just the negative thoughts like that that come up and come about when we're going through this. And then I swapped them all to positive thoughts. And as we did that, I also put in the caption about naps and being here for our kids and serving this purpose and having fulfillment out of this, because it's a choice that we're making and. And we're the ones that are trusted and they feel so safe and secure with us. And we're always going to be better than an object, a crib or a rocker or a glider or anything like that. We want to be able to just lay our babies down and walk away. Our comfort is always going to feel better for them and to them than any object. And that was the mindset approach, right? And then I got, like, really great comments on that reel because this community is amazing and I love you guys so dearly. There was really great comments, right? And there were five comments specifically that stood out to me because they used a certain phrase that I had never heard of before, and the phrase was nap trapped. Nap trapped. And I was like, huh, that's interesting. And I view words very intentionally. I have a lot of purpose and. And the words that I choose. And it's taken a long time for me to program my mind to function this way, so I'm actively looking at words intentionally and with purpose. Because it's the way that I live my life. And everything that I teach to you, I truly do live it on a daily basis. Like, I learn it and I live it, and then I teach it to you. And I love it. So as I'm living this, it was interesting to me that we're using the word trapped next to the word nap. And these are all coming from women that are here on my account because they want to improve their mindset. And some of them are saying, like, I love to be nap trapped. That's great. Like, I'm so glad that you love it. And they're saying other things. Like, sometimes when I'm nap trapped, I feel so frustrated. And these swaps really helped me to change my mindset. Right? So kind of both sides, right? And as I was reading through the comments and I just kept seeing this word trapped, I decided to take it to my Instagram story and ask you guys, what does. How do you feel? This is the question I asked. How do you feel when you hear or use the word trapped? Because thoughts create feelings. Words hold power. They matter, and they're going to influence us. So I wanted to know what feelings come up for you when we use the word trapped? And a lot of them sounded like alone, anxious, helpless, scared, resentful and angry. Powerless, isolated, exhausted, unmotivated, and stuck. Like, I can't breathe or see more than three feet in front of me. Uncreative, unmotivated, not myself, no way out. Dark, scared, helpless and lonely, suffocating. Came up a lot. Claustrophobic. Came up a lot. Limited, desperate, in fight or flight mode. Like a fish without water. I mean, this went on and on and on. There were hundreds of them. Anxious, stuck, feeling anxious, overwhelmed. I'm reading them off to you right now. Hopeless, helpless, angry. Hundreds of them. And that's what they were saying. How they feel when they use that word. Suffocate. I'm sorry, when they use the word trapped. So what I want to call attention to here is the idea of a trigger word. So a trigger word is any word that brings up negative emotions within you. So when we try to use a trigger word inside of a positive affirmation or an intentional identity that we're trying to create for ourselves or an intentional steer of our mindset into the positive, it's going to fail. The identity, the mindset, the new thought, the positive affirmation is going to fail if there is a trigger word in there. And that's because we have a powerful association with that word of Negative emotions and negative emotions, negative interactions are seven times more powerful than positive ones. So it doesn't matter if you only have one negative trigger word in there, like the trigger word of trapped. And you can say, I love it when my baby naps on me. It's so fun to be nap trapped. The positivity in that sentence does not outweigh the negativity in that sentence. And your mind still associates trapped with all of those words that you shared with me to describe the word trapped. It doesn't care if we use it in a positive tense in a positive sentence or not. The mind just knows what it knows about that word. So if, and I'm not saying it's a trigger word for everybody, I'm just saying everyone that answered the question box on my Instagram story, and fortunately there were hundreds of them. Every single one had a negative emotional response to the word trapped. And I want you. The reason why I'm sharing this is not because I am calling out these women that have said nap trapped and I'm picking on them or anything like that. There was a little bit of an offensive nature when I did this, and I understand that it feels a little bit uncalled for. It feels a little bit like you're being attacked. I get it. I also know that as your coach, it is a massive injustice if I just ignore this, if I pretend like it doesn't matter, if I pretend like, oh, I didn't notice it, then I'm not serving you. And my job here is to serve you, to help you see what you might have missed, to help you learn, or what can enrich and escalate your your strives within mindset. Because if you are attached to my content in any way, it's because you want to work on your mindset. That's all my content is about. And I love you so much. I truly want you to feel calm in a rocking chair. And you're just going to feel frustrated and angry and isolated and stuck. If we say nap trapped, no matter how much we tell ourselves I love being nap trapped, your nervous system's going to respond to the same way. Because words hold power. And we have experiences with this word trapped. And that is what the mind is thinking about. It's thinking about the experiences with the word trapped. So we take the innocent act of a nap and we attach it to a trigger word, trapped. And the trigger word is going to beat the innocence. And I also think that it's interesting when we think about this, that when it comes to when you really think about it. Did you come up with that all on your own, nap Trapped, or did you pick it up from an influence? A creator on social media, a friend in your life, a family member, a TV show, a podcast episode you listened to on the radio, whatever, an ad that you saw? Oh, are you nap trapped? You might want this product to help you. Like, I want you to pay attention and just ask yourself, like, did I, in my own chosen identity, with a mindset that I love, come up with the phrase nap trapped to describe the way that it put my kids to sleep? Did I do that or was I influenced? We are influenced on a daily basis. So me calling attention to this. If you love the phrase nap trapped, I love that for you. Keep using it. I just want you to have another perspective so that you can choose more intentionally and feel empowered to make these decisions. That's what I want for you, is just to know, hey, this could be going on in your mind, and I want you to be aware of it so that you can choose intentionally and consciously. Because how intentionally are we really choosing if we don't have more information? I wouldn't say that's a responsive choice. I'd say that's a reactive choice where you're just using what you've got and moving forward instead of pausing to seek understanding and gain more perspectives. So the word trapped is a trigger word for many of you, which makes sense. We have experiences with the word trapped. Then we seemingly attach it as a harmless joking phrase, which we often do and we hear about in motherhood. Right. Even dark humor is something that is just constantly being pushed into mother's faces. Oh, we need the dark humor in motherhood. Actually, no, we don't. Because your subconscious mind has zero sense of humor. So it is not required to take something and turn it dark into humor and say that, oh, it's funny and have sarcasm. Words are commands in your mind, and your subconscious mind lacks humor, which means it's taking it as a command and direction. So if you hang out with people that are constantly belittling the experience in motherhood and nagging and complaining about their role as a wife, and they may say it's all for the sake of a joke and there's lots of sarcasm attached, and you can sense the sarcasm, and maybe you guys are laughing, you're still gonna go home and notice different things about your kids and different things about your spouse that model what your friend or your family member or your influence that you were taking in was talking about, because that's the way our minds work. And it may feel good temporarily, right? It temporarily feels good to complain with your friend about your spouse. Or it temporarily feels good to say nap trapped because it rhymes and it's funny. And then what happens? Our nervous system catches up with us, the programming sinks in and it's no longer funny. And now we're just seeking out relatability. Instead of pushing ourselves to become who we wanna be, we're trying to relate with what we're already thinking. And again, when we build this self awareness, it feels hard and it feels freaking, triggering and it stinks sometimes. And I get that it pulls on our mommy heart because we have not been in alignment with the mommy that we know we wanna be. And I wanna reassure you that you feel that pull in your heart because you have a mommy heart. You have that already. And it's just guidance. That guilt that you feel is just a sign that you've been out of alignment, that what you've chosen to do no longer aligns. And the fact that it was a choice is wonderful. It's wonderful that you made that choice because that means you can choose to do different. If somebody else makes you, controls you, and decides what you're gonna do, then they're the ones that get to decide how long you're gonna think this way and how long you're going to feel this way, how long you're going to do these things. And when you get to change or if you get to change. And I refuse to allow us to live that way. I live that way for so long thinking that people make me mad. They make me yell, my husband makes me ignore my kids, make me do all these things. No, no more. I'm done. I am living as who I want to be. Even if it means that I have to take total ownership of everything I've ever done, so be it. Because then I know I can change it. And I can become someone that I love being and I can live a life that I feel proud to model in front of my kids. And I can change the world just by changing my own choices, modeling it to my kids, and knowing that generationally we will change the world together. That's what I know is coming. Because I take the ownership and the accountability and I'm encouraging you to do the same thing. Even on the times that it hurts. I know those times very, very well. And just know it's extremely counterproductive to have a trigger word in a phrase or mindset you want to use for empowerment and relief. It's not going to work. And it's important that you know that. It was important for me to learn that too. And remember that the subconscious mind has zero sense of humor. Trapped creates the same feelings even if you try to use it. So for humor. And it's just going to take a minute for us to catch up. And we will. And then we're going to be trying to numb the feelings. So all the napped trapped, we're taking something innocent nap and attaching it to a trigger word trapped, and then expecting to feel better. You're not going to feel better. I'd argue that you would feel worse. All for the sake of humor that your subconscious mind doesn't have. Even if you want a positive mindset around naps, however they look in your home, however they look in your home, this is not about the way you choose to pursue naps. This is what we think about them. It will fail if you keep the trigger word. So notice the words that you're using. Do any of them hold triggering negative emotions for you? Those are the words we want to focus on removing. And that can be different for us. Perfect can be a trigger word for you. That's okay, remove it. Don't try to change the meaning of a trigger word. Just use a more empowered word. Use a word that creates feelings of empowerment. Then trying to change words that create the triggers for you. Your mind has severe conditioning and it's just give yourself the opportunity to flush out the trigger words with empowered words rather than trying to change the trigger words. So words compose thoughts, thoughts create feelings. Our feelings lead to our behaviors and our behaviors lead to our outcomes. So I then asked our fun Instagram community, now that we know that there's this trigger word of trapped in here and how our trigger words create feelings and that it's not an innocent baby napping or you providing safety for that to happen. That's creating these feelings. It's the trigger word. It's our mindset about it. It's not the innocence and it's not your service. Those are things that create empowered feelings within us. If you just focus on being the safety, nurturing place that naps happen, you would feel empowered. If we remove the trigger words, you are left with more empowerment. So I asked the community, what are we going to use to replace nap trapped? And I gave some of my ideas and some of those were nap sanctuary, nap safety, nap loving, napped up and I had some ideas. And I loved the ideas that you came up with. And there were two girls specifically that Stacy and Dalen and they shared nap Wrapped. Like, wrapped up in love and snuggles. Wrapped up together and snuggles is how they described it. So nap Wrapped. If you are someone that loves to have a catchy little phrase, I love that too. I love it when mindset rhymes. It's definitely easier to remember it and recall it when you want it. And to build that intentional programming, we just have to do it again intentionally. If we want that conditioning to happen naturally and be responsive, we. We have to do it intentionally. So I am challenging you. I'm challenging you that anytime you want to say nap Trapped, be it to a friend, a spouse, your children, social media, you're on a podcast, whatever you're doing, you're in your writing. Anytime you want to say nap Trapped, I am challenging you to change it to nap Wrapped. Can you do that for me? I know you can. Will you do that with me? Just with me? If you notice it, notice somebody else saying it. I don't care if it's an influencer on social media that has millions of followers or if it's your best friend next door that you guys follow each other. We are influencing people, and your influence stretches far and wide. Take all the numbers out of it. It's not about the numbers. It's about the people. And you have this opportunity to change someone's life by sharing one little thing, like nap rapt. When they say nap trapped. And you could even say something like, you know, I was saying nap trapped too, and I've decided that trapped is a big trigger word for me. I actually feel really frustrated when I think about being trapped. So I changed it to nap wrapped. It might help you too. Like, it's so wonderful to lead by example, spread light and share joy. Plant seeds in others and let them grow on their own. Just do your part in this by spreading the message, by changing your language, by changing your feelings, change your behaviors. And as your outcomes change, People are always watching you. They're learning from you. And the most important people that you have to teach are right here in your own home. So if you really want to make a big difference, you'll just start by changing your language in your own home. And I hope that this is an episode that inspires you to do so by using naprapt and that you're looking forward to the new mommy mindset course to give you even more powerful tools and skills to be implementing and practicing on a daily basis that will not only serve you as showing up as the mommy you want to be, they'll serve your entire home and family so that the father of your children can show up as the daddy that he wants to be. And that your kids can grow up to be exactly who they want to be, too. Because they know how to help their mind work with them and for them rather than against them. I love you all so much. And I'm so grateful that I have the opportunity to share what I learned with you. And I promise you that as I live this work, I get even more excited to share it all with you. And I'm grateful to be here. Love you dearly. I'll talk to you later.
