9. The Best Way to Start Your Day
31 Mar 2021 · 17 min
Coach Tessa Romero explains how to reshape your morning by replacing negative self-talk like "I am tired" with intentional statements like "I am productive." Write down what's holding you back, flip each obstacle into its opposite, then read those statements every morning. She uses her own examples: waking before her kids, handling pregnancy exhaustion, and giving herself ten minutes to get ready.

Hello, my beautiful friend, and welcome to the Mind Body Alignment podcast. This is a place for us to come together and not only understand who we are, but how to become exactly who we want to be while developing the right skills and tools to help us do so. I'm your coach, Tessa Romero, and I can't wait to get started. Well, hey there girlfriends. So happy that you're back and ready to know my secret sauce for starting my day off so great every single morning. I know. Doesn't that sound kind of crazy? Well, I'm going to share my secret with you. You have to promise not to tell anybody. Just kidding. I want you to tell the whole flipping world. So I'm not going to spend time on this podcast episode talking about the perfect time to wake up or the perfect time to go to bed. Now obviously this is just a side note. If you're trying to wake up earlier in the morning, you need to look at your nighttime routine to don't look at your mornings and feel frustrated with what time you're waking up. Start looking at your bedtime routine and getting curious. You don't need to shame yourself. Remember, get curious with what time am I going to bed? What are my nighttime habits in my routine, and what am I spending my time doing? Do I feel relaxed when I go to bed? Am I getting enough sleep? Do I feel refreshed in the morning? Ask yourself these questions because if you do want to start waking up earlier, you need to start going to bed earlier so that you're getting enough sleep. Sleep. Also, I told you guys, I think it was last week or a couple weeks ago, I can't remember, but I started waking up before my boys, which I was like an avid who the freak wakes up before their kids? Those are crazy people type of person. That was me as a mother until I started doing it and I was like, well hey, I'm drinking the juice and I like it. So actually this morning I got up at 4:40. I know draw for freaking dropped to the floor. But in order for me to get to the position of waking up earlier, I had to start going to bed earlier, prioritizing my bedtime routine because I still need sleep. So this podcast episode, like I said, I'm not about to tell you the perfect time to go to bed, perfect time to wake up or you know, the things that you need to start your day doing. Like if you don't want to work out at 5am, I'm not about to tell you to work out at 5am but what I am going to do right now is share my secret sauce with you. And that is. What is the first thing that you tell yourself when you wake up? What's that first thought sound like? Like what do you say to yourself? And the reason why I'm asking that, because that is my secret sauce for starting a great day. Every single day, no matter what time I woke up. Because if my boys are up in the middle of the night and I didn't get to wake up at 4:30, 5, 5:30, whatever, I didn't get to do that. And I want and I prioritized my sleep that morning, said, you know what, I just need to sleep in till my boys do. I'm not waking up saying, gosh, I just screwed up my day, I really should have woken up. Blah blah blah, I can't believe I did that. No, I'm still waking up with my same gratitude, my same positive energy because I am really focusing on my self talk. So there will be mornings that maybe you don't get that workout in or maybe you sleep in or maybe you feel a little bit more tired that morning. Like a lot of different things can happen from one morning to the next and they're not. I don't know if you guys can hear sunny, but he's just scratching on my closet door. So just ignore that. But not all mornings are going to be picture perfect exactly as you wanted them to go. But you can still start every single day off right and in a great way. And here's how you do it, that self talk. So as you're asking yourself, what is the first thing that I say to myself every morning? I'm like your, I'm your subconscious right now talking to you. What's the first thing that I say to myself every single morning? Take a drink of water. I don't know if you heard that, but it was extremely refreshing. What thoughts are coming to your mind? Friends, I'm going to share some examples with you. A lot of times it is another day. Or how is it already the morning? Like I'm so exhausted, I'm so tired. This is why I'm lazy. Like I'm never gonna feel better. I have no energy. Wow. I feel like my freaking energy went down 100 knots just by saying all that. Like what? No, no, no, no, no no. How the frick are you gonna start your morning with that type of self talk and belief system and then expect, expect to just jump out of bed and say, we're ready to go guys. Good morning, kids. Like you're not going to do that because the self talk is already just starting out that day with negativity, low vibration, low energy. You're not going to be prioritizing yourself in the things that make you feel good. And then that self talk, what comes after that? The actions, right? You're going to skip putting on clothes that you actually feel good in and love. You're gonna skip putting on your mascara or brushing your hair or eating a really nutrient dense breakfast because you've already told yourself that you're lazy. You've already told yourself that you're exhausted. You have no time. This is also hard. It's never gonna get better. It's always gonna be difficult. Like you've already painted this story and that's how you're starting your day. AKA you ain't having a great day, sister. It doesn't even matter what the freak happens in your day. You've already decided that it sucks. So like I said, my secret sauce is to focus on that self talk. I don't care what time you wake up or what your routine is like. I feel like everyone's going to have that great wake time window for them. And maybe you start by just trying to wake up 10 minutes earlier. Like everyone's gonna do it different. And that's awesome. I want you to do what works best for you. But your self talk, I don't freaking care who you are. Your self talk matters. The things that you say to yourself, the things that you believe about yourself matter. So since now we know they matter so much, and you know, I was already your subconscious for a minute to help you realize the things that you're saying yourself. Get out a piece of paper and we are going to try and work out what would be the best thing for you to say to yourself to start your day every single day. No, let me just say this in the beginning. It doesn't have to be the same thing every single day. However, if you have a very long ingrained belief system that you are XYZ and it's negative and you say it every single day, then yeah, you might find yourself saying the same thing every single morning. Which is okay because really only you know what you need to hear when you need to hear it. And it's your responsibility and biggest job to say those things. That's part of being your own best friend. Byob. How are you going to byob? Tell yourself exactly what you need to hear when you need to hear it. Start showing up for yourself. Now let's get back to the whole morning Self talk, you know the first thing that you're going to say to yourself. So get out that piece of paper and let's consider like write down some obstacles that you struggle with. Maybe you truly do feel tired every single morning. So write that down as an obstacle of yours. Write down obstacles at the top of your paper. And now, first obstacle, I am tired. Second obstacle, I am a procrastinator. Third obstacle, I am lazy. Fourth obstacle, I am exhausted. Anytime that you are running that I am line in your mind that is preventing you from having that wonderful day no matter what time you wake up. All of those I am statements, get them down on a piece of paper as your obstacles. Because really those don't have to be who you believe you are. Those could just be limiting beliefs. It's a limiting belief to say, well, I am inconsistent. I am 1000% positive that if I talk to you on a phone call for 30 minutes, I could prove to you how consistent you are. You consistently take care of your kids every single day. You consistently go to work. You consistently respond to your emails, the text messages, though you consistently answer your phone when it rings. Like you do things consistently. You may not just be applying consistency the way that you'd like to, but it is not a fair statement to say I am inconsistent if I can sit here and prove to you how you are consistent. So write down all those obstacles on your piece of paper that are kind of preventing you from starting out a great morning every single day. And now I want you to kind of consider the opposite of all of those. What would be the opposite of inconsistent? Well, it'd be consistent. So maybe the thing that you need to tell yourself every morning and this could be different for everyone. So don't look at it as like one size fits all. But an example of the first thing that you need to say to yourself every morning is, I am consistent. Or maybe you call yourself really lazy. Right. What would be the opposite of that? Productive. There's, I mean there's a lot of opposites to lazy, but productive is the ones that come to my mind. So maybe your little every single morning, quick little, I am to just help boost up your energy and get that mind working in a way that helps you needs to be, I am productive. And for a long time, my whole pregnancy with Luke, I struggled with exhaustion more than I did with Liam when I was pregnant with Luke. And I was sick of it. I was sick of staying in my pajamas till 11 o' clock every single, I guess, morning while Liam was playing around Me, because I just felt so exhausted from that pregnancy. But I was sick. Like, I just didn't want to waste my time like that. It was driving me crazy. So a simp. Literally, this is what I did. It was so stinking simple. I just started telling myself every single morning, I am intentional and I am productive. I am intentional and I am productive. I am intentional. I am productive. I would literally go to sleep thinking it. I am intentional. I am productive. I am intentional. I am productive. I am intentionally. I am productive. That's what I would fall asleep thinking about. So when I woke up in the morning, it was just so natural for me to say, nope, I'm getting up because I am intentional and I am productive. Before I get Liam out of his crib, I am going to brush my hair, put on my mascara, and get dressed. And for a long time, Liam would scream bloody murder every single freaking morning that he woke up. And it was very difficult to set the type of tone and energy that I wanted for my day when every single morning my baby woke up screaming. He could never just wake up, like, love you. Like, it was never that. It was like, screaming bloody murder every single morning. But a crazy thing started happening when I decided that I'm going to give myself 10 minutes every single morning before I go get Liam out of his bed. He's okay. He's right there. It's like, literally, I mean, he'd wake up between, like, 5:30 and 5:45. I'm like, he can wait till 6 then. That's what I wanted him to do anyway. So I. I would give myself those 10 minutes to just brush my teeth, brush my hair, put on my mascara, and get dressed. And the reason why I gave myself those 10 minutes and I believed that that's something that I deserve is because I started to remind myself, I am intentional and I am productive. I am intentional and I am productive. I don't feel productive when I'm staying in my pajamas. No part of me feels productive when I do that. I do not feel intentional when I haven't even gotten myself ready for the day. No part of my mind is like, ooh, how can I be intentional with my time? I'm like, nah, why do I feel this way? We have to start practicing the actions that align with who we want to be and who you believe you are. So remember, we've talked about this from the beginning. Identity plus mindset equals your actions. If you're not happy with your actions, look back at your mindset. Where does your mindset come from your identity. So this is just a really simple way for you to look at those obstacles. Maybe you only have one or two. Maybe you have 10. And you need a longer I am statement every morning. For me, it was I am intentional and I am productive. It got me out of bed. It got my actions getting in line with the way that I want to show up. And I still do this to this day. This is how I start every single day off great in a way that I feel really excited about because I'm putting my hands on that steering wheel and I'm deciding which way I'm going to go. Am I going to go to exhausted, lazy, procrastinator, defeated town to the left, or. Or am I going to turn it to the right and say, I am excited, I am energetic. I am intentional. I am productive. I am consistent. I am fabulous. Like, what do you need to hear every single morning to start your day off the way that you want to? That's a serious question to ask yourself. So once you have all of your obstacles written down, if you have space on the right side of every obstacle that you've written down, that's where you're going to want to provide the space to write down the opposite term. And if it's helpful for you, then take a highlighter or your pen or whatever and look at that. That obstacle again, look at that obstacle, reread it, and ask yourself, what is the underlying obstacle in here? And underline the word that stands out. So the word would be tired, exhausted, defeated, lazy, procrastinator, inconsistent. All of those words, those are the ones that you need to underline. Because what you're doing is creating an I am statement that proves to your brain, nope, see, that's not true. You are, like, specifically targeting that word that's holding you back from being who you want to be. And starting your morning this way, every single day, you get to decide what that first thought's going to be in the morning. You get to. And if you're going to again, turn to the left, that's a choice. If you're going to turn it to the right, that's a choice. So right. So underline all of those. And then off to the right, I want you to write the opposite term. What's the opposite of inconsistent? Consistent. What's the opposite of lazy? Energetic. If you wrote down negative, write down positive. If you wrote down defeated, write down vibrant. Any term that you wrote down as an obstacle, you want to have something that specifically combats that term in your I am statement that you're going to use in the mornings. So personally, mine changes every single morning. I wouldn't say that there's one specific thing that I struggle with on a daily basis right now, but I have in the past. And that's why I shared that story about intentional and productive. I was telling myself that every single morning now. But really what I'm trying to do now is elevate what I already have. The energy that I feel, the vibrancy, the capability and determination. I'm elevating those things. Like I know they're there. And you may be in a spot right now where you have to show yourself that they're there. Maybe you're not where I'm at or maybe you're above where I'm at, right? But where I'm at is I'm taking what I already have and I'm elevating it because I love what I have. So you can be on either side or anywhere, but it doesn't matter. That first thing that you tell yourself every single morning is how you're going to create your secret sauce of starting your day off in a way that aligns with not only who you are, but who you want to be. Because I promise you, that is something within your reach is becoming who you want to be. And in my one on one coaching program, mind body alignment, I help you through a lot of the obstacles that keep you from being who you want to be, right? What are the things that you believe about yourself? Maybe the experiences that you've had in life that keep you from believing that you can be that energy, energetic, successful, vibrant person that you want to be, what's keeping you from doing that? And it's interesting because when you really think about the experiences that have shaped us from childhood to yesterday to today, whatever it is, when you really think about those, they weigh a lot on us. And I can tell you right here, you know, create that I am statement, get out that piece of paper, do this exercise. But are you doing it? Why aren't you doing it? That is the reason why I do my one on one coaching. Because this podcast, my Instagram, the books that you read, all of the things, if you are not applying them, then there's a deeper reason why you're not doing it. And usually it comes back down to your own self love and your own self worth. Do you believe that you're worthy of becoming who you want to be? Do you love yourself enough to sit with where you are and then grow into who you want to be? And that's why I love one on one coaching so much, because everyone's story is so different and it's just honestly one of the most incredible things that I've ever done. So if that's something that interests you for sure, click the link to apply for my one on one coaching program, Mind Body Alignment and I will be able to reach out to you directly so that we can do a little discovery call together.
