Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero, and what you wake up thinking about in the morning when you take that first step out of the bed, that thought that you granted priority rights to your day is who you are in that day. Have you ever thought about it? When you lay down in the morning, you wake up in the morning. What is it that you start thinking about? Are your thoughts positive and thinking about little birds flying in the air and how beautiful the day is? Or is your thoughts negative? I got this to do. I got that to do. I have this meeting ahead of me. I got this. This person's going to annoy me. Oh, this person laying next to me. I just can't stand them. The damn kids. You get it, right? You get it. Who Or which version of those are you? Or is it a combination? I was laying in bed this morning and I was thinking to myself, I had thoughts going through my mind and I was thinking, if I got up at this very moment with that thought, that's who I am today. So I relaxed. Remember, when you wake up in the morning, you give gratitude. You give gratitude to the fact that you say, thank you, I'm grateful that I have I have 10 fingers that function and bend and fold. I'm grateful that I have toes and feet. I grateful that I don't— not in pain. I'm grateful that I have a roof over my head. I am grateful that I went to bed with food in my stomach. These important things to wake up in the morning, to be grateful for who you are, what you are, where you are, and why you're in this situation. Such reflections make you a humble man or woman. And as I was doing that, I realized that by controlling my thoughts that way, I should also control my thoughts on my thinking of the day. So I didn't get out of bed until I started thinking positive thoughts, good thoughts about today, good thoughts about myself, good thoughts about other people. And when I was there, That's when I finally put my first foot on the ground and got out of bed. That moment when you get out of bed, that thought that's in your head is who you are throughout the day. Think about it. You ever have a thought when you wake up in the morning and you go say you're angry at someone or you're angry at a situation, or you're nervous and you jump out of bed, you just gave that thought, that person, that situation— you just gave it overriding priority rights to your entire day. To not just your day, to your emotional state, to your mental state, to the fact that you're not going to function 100%, that you're going to be an emotional nut. You're not going to be balanced and you're going to piss people off and you're not going to make yourself happy. All because that moment you were shaking in your bed, you're like, oh, I gotta get out of bed. That is the worst thing you could do. You're supposed to do the opposite. You are supposed to calm it all down. And when you go, how do I calm it down? How do I calm it down? Find yourself. Find why there's beauty in your life. Find the peace in your soul. Think of different things until you find harmony within you. Who are you? Think of the little things. You can breathe, right? I'm an asthmatic. I went for a walk last night. Halfway through the walk, I couldn't breathe. There was no smoke in the air. I don't think there was any pollen. It's the middle of the winter, and I just couldn't breathe. And I was walking with my wife and she was like, "You okay?" I'm like, "No, I can't breathe." And I thought how amazing this is, that some people who don't have asthma, they just take breathing for granted. And then other people who have asthma, breathing is something we think about all the time. What do you think about all the time when you're laying there in bed? Do you take for granted the fact that you're breathing as you lay there and feel sorry for yourself, or you go through all the list of all the stuff that's pissing you off, or how horrible your day is. As you're doing that, you're breathing, but you're not even saying you're thankful for that. You're not being thankful the fact that you're staring at your ceiling. You're not being thankful that you have hair on your head. You understand? Before you get up, or make sure when you get up, you get up with that version, that feeling that you want to have all day long. Even if it's temporary, even if it's not going to help your to-do list to have that feeling, it actually is going to help your to-do list to have that feeling because you're going to go through your to-do list in a better mood, probably more efficient, probably to-do list is not going to be over that overwhelming. But I guarantee you this, if you wake up and you go, oh, this day is going to kill me, and then you put that foot on the ground That day's already killed you. You've already killed you. But if you wait a moment and you think about how fortunate you are, you think about— you really not think about, but you realize this day is mine. I control it all. I control it all. And then you put your foot on the ground and you start the day. You're gonna have a beautiful day, irregardless of whatever's on the to-do list and whatever's thrown at you. Go forth and spread beauty and light, your light, on everyone. And as I heard in a Robin Williams movie, what I think is beautiful, carpe diem, seize the day. I love you. This is Thomas Anglero.
