Episode 175: Your Goals are Not Big Enough
22 Jan 2023 · 17 min
Thomas Anglero argues that limiting beliefs hold you back from achieving what's possible. He uses examples like the 4-minute mile, David Goggins, and Elon Musk to show how people accomplish extraordinary things once they stop accepting artificial boundaries.

Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero, and I am in a reflective mood because my mind has been blown. My thoughts on the limits of reality, of what is possible, what is not possible, what human beings can achieve, what I can achieve, has been blown. And I want to tell you a story to help you to blow your mind. To expand your horizons. And the story maybe might not do that, but it'll push you to do it. Let me tell you a story. Just a few days ago, I came back from a trip to Dubai. I'm not advocating going to Dubai. If you don't believe in going to Dubai, that's fine. But this is a story about Dubai. Take it for that. A few days ago, I went to Dubai. Dubai, just over a decade ago, was just a lot of sand, a city, but with a meaning, a purpose. And the purpose was to be the tourist capital of the world. And they use their money, the money that they have in the Middle East, and they use that money to build cities, a city. But within the city of Dubai are—
I grew up in New York City, I grew up in Manhattan.
To me, Manhattan is one of the greatest cities with one of the greatest skylines, with the greatest skyscrapers in the world. First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue, First Street, Second Street, buildings, concrete. They call it the concrete jungle. To me, Manhattan, there's nothing like it. Every city in the world tried to reproduce Manhattan and never could. When I went to Dubai, what they have done in the last 15 years is they have built 50 First Street, Second Street, Third Street, First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue.
They built 50 Manhattans. The infrastructure, the buildings, the streets, the cleanliness, the luxurious options Everything is the best of the best for as far as the eye can see.
Skyscraper, and you, to be a skyscraper in Dubai, you got to be at 100 floors, not 20, 30, 40 you find in Middle America or any other town in Europe. They call that a skyscraper. You better be at 100 floors to be called a skyscraper.
Dubai, it is kilometers and miles and miles of connected Manhattans. They built in the water out of Dubai. The beaches were all accumulated and bought up. They could not expand the beachfront property, so they called— they built something called the Palm, the leaf, the shape of a leaf, the palm, into their water. And they built 7 kilometers of New York City into water that they filled it with their own sand. I am telling you that these people think big. This is not a podcast about Dubai. This is a podcast about thinking huge. I want you to understand that going to Dubai, one of the main purpose of going to Dubai is that they will teach you how to think.
And that I realized that my thinking of what I thought can be achieved, my thought of what is big, or what we say in New York City, big time. That ain't big time. That's where you start. Your capacity, your ability to achieve things is only limited by your thoughts. We're only limiting ourselves by our thoughts.
But it's not your fault. It's not my fault. I had no idea that things can be so big, that things can be built so quickly, so beautifully. I thought it took— New York City took hundreds of years to get to New York City. Dubai did it in 15, and they built 500 of New York Cities. Not 500 buildings, 500 New York Cities. My point is that there is no limitation. Don't you ever let anybody, anybody ever feed you anything into your head to limit your thought capacity of what you can and cannot do, what is possible, what cannot be possible. Let me Do not let anybody give you that virus and that crap in your head. It is— that person does not love you. That person does not respect you. You must understand that anything, anything is possible. And where your mind and where you daydream, when you sit down and relax or you're sleeping as a kid or as an adult and you're envisioning something, that is what your brain can possibly comprehend and put together.
1 1 2, da da da da, and you have this thought of greatness.
That is just the beginning of where and what you can achieve.
For example, you have in your head that someday I want to own a Ferrari, someday I want to have a house, someday I want to have a car, someday I want to have a boat, someday, someday, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
That's just little stuff. Why are you only limiting yourself to a Ferrari, a boat, a house, a cabin?
Why are you thinking so small? I'm being dead serious. And I'm not saying to have a goal of buying 5 houses, 10 houses. I'm saying have a goal of buying every car manufacturing company, to own them all, to own all the boat manufacturing companies, to own all of the house manufacturing companies.
You think I'm crazy?
Welcome to Dubai. The government of Dubai Brings in the best knowledge in the world. They build everything. They own everything. I am not praising Dubai. I am saying this, that 15 years ago they had nothing and now they have everything. And their attitude was just do it. Nike nailed it with that saying, just build, just create the greatest thing in the world. Nothing else matters. That sole attitude, just do it, nothing else matters, breaks away, breaks the chains, the mental handcuffs from all the limitations that you have in your life. I am telling you right now from the bottom of my soul, you can achieve anything. You can achieve things beyond your measure. It is society that's holding you back, and it's your limitation and thoughts, and I'm I'm not picking on you. I'm not making myself feel bad. I now understand that my limited thought capacity has held me back. Maybe right now you're saying, I really want to have the goals of making $100,000, $1 million. That would be amazing. What an achievement that would be in my life. That's a really small number. Again, I'm not making fun of you. I'm not trying to make you feel bad. The reality is you could achieve 20 zeros more. Here's the reason why I'm right. There is somebody who has 20 zeros more than you, and they're not smarter than you. They just don't have a limiting factor in their head. Take away the limiting factor in your head. Do not limit anything in your head. Do you remember the stories of mothers that their babies get trapped under cars and the mother all of a sudden with one arm lifts the entire car up with one arm, take the baby out so the baby's safe? This story is famous because it has happened all over the world to many different mothers and fathers. In that moment, you don't say, this 2.5-ton, 3-ton vehicle is on my child, I cannot lift it. You got rid of the limiting factor and you said, I'm going, I'm saving my baby. I'm taking this car, this truck, a bus off of my child and I'm saving my child. The limiting factor is gone. There is no doubt. There's not even a thought of doubt. It just doesn't exist. That is the same thing we all have in our heads about how we see ourselves, how we see ourselves physically. Am I too skinny? Am I too fat? How we see ourselves financially. I'm too broke. I don't think anybody's ever complained that they're too rich. I don't have enough of this, I don't have enough of that. Limiting, limiting, limiting. I am telling you right now, the crazy people you've met in your life, you see crazy people rolling down the street, I don't think they're crazy. I think they figured it out. They're running around laughing at all of us because we're all walking around having someone put a cap and put a limit our thinking, a limit on our capabilities. You have ultimate capabilities. Again, athletes, every, every athletes, they, they break world records. They do things never done before. The famous story about the gentleman that ran the first 4-minute mile, and within 30 days of him breaking the 4-minute mile, 15 more people that month broke the 4-minute mile.
Why did that happen? Human beings always had the capability to run a sub-4-minute mile. He was the first because he broke the limiting factor in our minds.
And once he did that, other people in the world said it is possible, and then they did it.
Limiting factors.
You're only worth making $50,000 or whatever currency you have a year. That's what the starting price of this job is.
That's a limiting factor. You're worth much more than that. You know that. Do not let anyone set a limiting factor. That's a limiting factor. You're not good enough to be on this team.
You're not pretty enough.
You're too fat. All limiting factors. What do you believe? What do you want? What is that you want to achieve?
That's all that matters.
Your driving force, your passion, your beyond passion. This, you cannot exist without achieving this, this, This picture you have of yourself, stay on that because that's the picture without limiting factor, because you can feel it, you can taste it in your mouth. That's how you exist. If you're not existing there, then you're accepted. You have accepted that cap and that limit on your life.
And that's fine.
But one, don't complain.
About the fact that you settled. And number 2, when you meet, see, hear, read, whatever, of someone who doesn't have a limiting factor, don't make fun of them, don't get in their way, support them and help them to reach their, their goal. In society, we make fun of people who have these crazy goals. I mean, everybody makes fun of the geniuses before they've seen as a genius. Elon Musk, everybody thought he was crazy. Some young kid building some sort of digital currency called PayPal. Then genius. Oh my God, he makes electrical cars. There's never been a successful electrical car. Tesla, genius. He's not a genius. He doesn't have a limited— limiting factor in his head. Steve Jobs, normal guy, loved typography, loved design of letterings. That passion to see perfection, to allow the expression of human life and culture, for people to be in touch with the arts led to design of the Apple computer, the Macintosh. People made fun of him until he did it. Genius. That a simple thing made of plastic, some glass that you use your finger, can become the iPod to play music. Not just 10 songs, thousands of songs. Something made of plastic with glass you could use your fingers can allow you to communicate with people all over the world. To become the iPhone. No limiting factor. So let me ask you a question. What is your limiting factor? What thought do you have, or where does your limit stop when you see your life, where you see your career, you see your income? You see the amount of exercise you do in a day? You see the amount of things you achieve in a day? There are limiting factors we have everywhere in our life. If you know what David Goggins, the famous exercise military guy who ran— or runs ultra marathons and all that, he had no limiting factor. 250 pounds is what, 120 kilos or bigger? I think he was more than that, close to 300 pounds, maybe close to 140 kilos. And he ran a 100-mile race with no training. He broke the bones of his legs with 30 miles to go, and he still kept on running, just taped it up so the bones wouldn't move so much. How was he able to achieve all that? He took away in that race his limiting factor. And he's done more and more races. The guy is legendary, and he's alive and well, and he's a role model for many people. But why is he a Roma? Why is he seen as a genius? Because he has no limiting factor. What is your limiting factor? This is a serious question because we have limiting factors in all parts of our life. Matter of fact, throughout our entire life. What are your limiting factors for this new year, for this year, this week, this month, this day? Become aware of what are your limiting factors. And once you're aware of them, and I know it's uncomfortable exercise, once you're aware of them, then you attack them. This is Thomas Anglero. I really want to go on with this, but I just want to leave you here with this thought process, thinking inside your head, what is my limiting factor? And then you eliminate that. I swear to you, the great ones that we call great, the genius that we call genius, are just like you. They are just like you. They just don't have a limiting factor in their head. They don't limit themselves to anything. You will never again limit yourself to anything. You are the greatest of the greats. Just don't put a limit on your greatness. Go forth and spread beauty and light. I love you with all my heart. I believe in you with all my soul. Do not put a limiting factor on anything. That you do touch, smell, believe. Whatever you believe in you, it is meant for you. You can achieve it. And what you think you think, what you think you can achieve, you could go beyond that. Because what you think you achieve, that's your limiting factor.
Isn't that exciting?
That this dream that you have in your head is only the beginning? Isn't that amazing?
I think that's like, wow, this is so much fun. That this goal I've had in my head my whole life is actually the first step, the beginning of where I'm going.
I swear, that's the most happiest thing, thought I could have in my head, because it's not over. The journey only begins. That every experience I'm having now, every experience you're going to have now, is to get you to that dream that you've always had. And when you get to that dream, you get to the top of the mountain, you realize You're only at the foot of an even bigger mountain of more success, more joy, more love, more hugs. Don't let anybody limit you ever. I love you. This is Thomas Anglero. Until next time.
