Thomas Anglero tells recent graduates to stop chasing distractions and focus on a personal vision instead. He walks through an exercise: write down your commitment, then destroy the paper to lock it in. One graduate's story sparked the whole talk.

I hope you truly enjoy all the lessons I share, all the dots I connect that sometimes are just really difficult to get out but it's all for you. I truly hope you enjoy this episode. Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I'm your host, Thomas Anglero. And a few days ago, one of the graduates at my job, or management trainees depending upon what generation of corporations you worked with, he came, he came to me and he said, um, I want you to talk to next year's new group of trainees who are coming in, group of graduates, and I want them— I want you to inspire them the same way you inspired me a year ago on my first week of work. And I asked him, what was it that I said that inspired you? He said, you talk like nobody else. Everyone here— and this is a company of 850 people— all move around in the same flock, doing pretty much the same thing, saying pretty much the same thing, but you're different. And I asked him, why do you think so? And he said, because you exist in the now. This is a 26-year-old kid who understands what existing in the now is. And I asked him, 'And where do you exist?' He goes, 'I don't dare exist in the now.' Think about that. Do you exist in the now? The now being right now. Do you look around where you are right now? Do you see where you are Are you aware of the material that's touching you? Are you sitting down? Are you sitting on a leather chair? Are you sitting on a fabric chair? Do you smell something? Do you smell flowers? Do you smell cigarettes? Do you smell food? Are you aware of your now? If you're aware of your now, then let me ask you, Where are you now in your life? Are you happy with where you are now? Are you happy with the decisions you have made now? Are you in love with the person you want to be with? Now. Now is the only thing that matters. If you stay in the now, then you don't get caught up with all the other things of other people putting different measurements, different expectations, different colors, different sounds. All of that is a distraction to you and where you're supposed to be and your now. Why isn't your color, your smell? Why aren't you the distraction for others. Why are you letting others distract you from your now? Your now should be so damn powerful that it's distracting everyone else. Be in your now, right now. That— if that is so powerful, you will be a magnet for everyone. And for those haters out there, those people who insult you, for those people who don't recognize you, they will run from you. You because you have the power. It's just emanating from you and it pushes all those people away. You have to live in the now. There is no cost for living in the now. That cost is just you to be you. Live in the now. One other thing we got into when we were talking And I told him about, be careful with distractions. You're 26 years old and distractions come in different flavors. I asked him, do a lot of your friends— I said, what is their goal during the week and what is their— what do they talk about? He said, partying. We want to have fun. I said, so that's the goal. The goal is to have fun and have to party. You can have fun anytime you want. There's nothing wrong with having fun. That's not what I'm saying. But that can't be the goal, can it? Because if just having fun's the goal, okay, you just had fun, goal achieved. Then what? You're 26 years old and now you're 26 years old and 15 minutes later you've had some fun. Let's give some credit. 6 hours later you've had a lot of fun. What's the goal now? Have more fun? You have fun again? What's the goal now? You're at work. What's the goal now? Do what your boss says, make sure you deliver, make sure you meet all your sales by Friday or in the quarter. What's the goal now? Gotta feed the kids, put them to bed. What's the goal now? You cannot take life so Damn, blah. I don't believe in goals. I believe that you should have a picture. You should have a thought in your mind that is so insanely— that is only yours, by the way. This thought, this dream, this vision, this taste, whatever it is, you have this thing that only you have in the back of your mind, or maybe buried in the middle. It doesn't matter the location of where or what you're supposed to be. That's it. That's where you're going. It's not a goal. This is a life mission. What are you doing to get there? But maybe that's so scary for some of us, or for some of you, that you distract yourself with, let's have some fun. Now postpone that thing, that thing that's you. You postpone it today, you postpone it now, you postpone it to next Friday, you postpone it for another week, postpone it for another month, you postpone. How many things you're postponing right now in your life? Right now in your life, the most important things that probably in your life you're postponing. But the idiots in your life— and I'm sorry, I'm not mean to insult anybody, maybe I do— the people who don't have a great significance in your life who are making decisions for you, you're prioritizing them. But you and the most important things that you're supposed to be doing so that you would be a happier person, that you would have a happier life, you have a happier relationship, you would have people around you all the time, you would feel phenomenal about yourself. Just postponing that, but the idiot who's telling you what to do, you're prioritizing them. What do you want to do right now? Get it? Who you are right now, this thought you have right now, this realization that you know I'm right, right now, this what that thing inside you says, yeah, I need to do this. That's your thing. That's what you focus on now. And you hold on to that thing. Find a piece of paper right now, write that thing down. Make sure no one else ever reads whatever you write down. Matter of fact, I want you to write it down Write it down in print, write it down in script, write it down in multiple languages if you know multiple languages. Write it down so you imprint that not in your brain, but you imprint that into your DNA. And then I want you to destroy that piece of paper so there's no chance no one else can see it. But because you've written it down and you've written it down in different ways, it is yours and you can never leave it because now you have a visualization, your mind-body connected. You had to do it in different languages, you had to do it in different formats, in script and in print. It is imprinted in you and is imprinted in your DNA. You cannot run from you and you cannot run from your now. You are now on. That's it. You're on right now. That's all it took. It took you committing to yourself by writing on a piece of paper and putting the thought into reality by writing it down. Have you written it down or you just listening to me? If you're driving a car, don't crash. But if you're anywhere where you have a pen and paper, or you have a finger and a mobile phone where you can, you know, trace it out, write it out, trace it out— this is about you. This is about your now. Your now that will be the now every single moment from now. You will be you right now, all the time, every moment, every second. Now, now. And you're gonna be that leader. You're gonna be that amazing person that everybody's always talking about. That's who you are you're going to be right now, and you won't stop being that. That's it. That's it. Don't be part of the flock. There's no value being part of the flock. There's no value being like everybody else. There's only value in being you. A friend of mine, Jimmy Westerheim, He's running this incredible organization collecting stories of people who are changing the world. He's literally collecting stories of people's life. I'm touched beyond belief. He asked me, and he recorded me about a year ago, my story, and he opened up something, and he wasn't opening up a memory. He opened up a reminder that people, people who are living in the now, people understand that the now is about love, and that Jimmy and the people that work with him are spending their life and their time and their now capturing other people's now. The Human Aspect is the name of the organization. I don't care if there's a plug. If there's anything needs to be plugged, it's the human aspect. Google it, spend time on it, watch the videos. Find you now. If you can't find you now at the human aspect, then watch more videos. I wish I was there wherever you are. Holding your hand so you can feel how much I'm trembling for how much I want you to be who you are right now for the rest of your life. I love you from the bottom of my heart. Live in the now. Until the next time. Thank you for listening to that episode.
