The episode is a motivational solo monologue addressing people affected by the economic aftermath of COVID-19 — unemployment, loss of income and hardship — and combines a personal hardship story (falling to his knees with groceries spilled) with practical advice: release despair, believe in yourself, take action, find people with shared interests online, build a tribe, and leverage new opportunities. The host repeatedly invites listeners to contact him (anglero.com and social channels) and frames the crisis as a universal restart and a chance to rise. I hope you truly enjoy all the lessons I share, all the dots I connect that sometimes are just really difficult to get out but it's all for you. I truly hope you enjoy this episode.
Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero and I am here to help you. Everyone, everyone I know has been affected by this COVID-19 outcome, not by the virus. And if you have been affected by the virus or someone that you know has been affected by the virus, Huge hug to you and all my blessings and love, and I truly hope everyone is okay. But what I'm talking about is the aftermath. The aftermath of— have you lost your job? Have you lost a place to live? Do you know someone who's been in this horrible situation? Everyone I know knows someone who's been affected.
I don't care where in the world you are. It has affected you. It has affected you. And I'm talking— this, this, this, this talk is for those people who are affected the most, and those people who don't have any money, who don't have any job to go to, who can't pay their rent, who can't pay their mortgage, who can't pay anything, who can't feed their families or are struggling to. Because if you can't feed your family, you're— that's something that's very hard to somebody to say themselves, because you will You will steal, you do whatever you got to do. You will borrow, you will sell stuff, but you will feed your family. You gotta feed, gotta eat. But every bit of it, everyone out there has been affected. And you know what? I've been there. I've been there without a job. And this is what I want to share. This is what I want to share is not just the stories, not the story, is but how I got my ass off the ground and made something happen when there's absolutely nothing happening, when there was nobody there to believe in me, there was no opportunity whatsoever. I made it happen. And what you got to do is you got to accept the fact that you are in the bottom. You are in shit, and you're in deep trouble. What happened to me when I hit— when it hit me the hardest—
look, I had a mortgage, 3 kids in school, and no job. No, I had a job. That made it even worse. I had my startup, which means I had expenses, which means whatever money I generated from the startup went right back into the startup to keep the damn thing going, which means I had no income. I had no salary. I had a startup, had a CEO title, I was a founder, but I couldn't feed my family. Talk about calling someone's bullshit. I was walking home from the store buying some food with a little bit of money I had, and all of a sudden I stopped, fell to the floor, fell on my knees in the street. And I had two plastic bags, one in each hand, and they fell. I let go of them. The potatoes and the onions started rolling out the plastic bag onto the street, onto the curb, off the curb. I didn't care because my hands were covering my eyes and I was crying, crying so hard because I realized it was all my fault. I realized that because I cannot accept that this whole thing— and look, look, COVID-19 is not your fault. You didn't lose your job because of you. You lost your job because of this horrible situation. But you got to understand, you have to say, this is enough of this shit, this is enough of this situation. I'm down about this thing, I'm angry about this thing.
And I was angry and I was down for so long because I had been without income for so long. And so many of you have been without an income or something for only a few weeks, maybe a few, a few months. But let me tell you, this shit's gonna get even longer. And when it does, I don't want you to get longer. I want you to get out of that, that situation and be up and take advantage of this amazing situation. We're all at ground zero. Let me be very clear, everybody's been affected.
Everyone.
Look around you. If people are faking it like they haven't been affected, they're lying to you. Or we used to say they're perpetrating a fraud.
They're not telling the truth.
Everyone's been affected and most people have been decimated. People are going hungry.
We're all at the same place.
And you, you, this is your moment for you to step up. You know how I was just a few months ago, most of us, most of you, everybody said, I wish I was Elon Musk, or I wish I'd have started PayPal and sold that off and then started Tesla. And now, oh, but right, everybody wish, wish, wish, wish. You know what? We're all now at the same starting line worldwide. 7 billion people. There's nobody in the lead. There's a couple of people who still have money from before, but they're irrelevant because a lot of them contributed to the situation. They sold their stocks early.
Don't want to get into that whole crap, but everybody's in the same place.
This is your moment for you to step up and to rise, but you cannot step up if you're feeling sorry for yourself and the situation sucks and that's all you talk about. You're done. I was done. I kept myself there for almost 7 years. Almost 7 years. Negativity, feeling down, complaining. Maybe not complaining to other people, complaining to myself. It doesn't help you. It doesn't do anything. It— matter of fact, it does. It keeps you exactly in that feeling you got with that hungry-ass stomach, no bills paid, That's what you're guaranteeing. So this is what you do.
You get over that real fast. Maybe you gotta fall on your knees and cry. I'm a man, I have no problem with it.
Go for a walk and yell at the top of your freaking lungs. If you live in New York City, we do it anyway. It's a New York thing.
I don't know why.
You know what? Drink 7 o'clock PM, right? 7 o'clock PM worldwide, everybody opens up their window and they cheer for other people. Use that moment and let it go, man. Let out all that anger and frustration. Let it all out. Love those people who are going to make a difference, and at the same time, release all that stress and tension. Let it go.
Let go of that anger.
Because when I did, when I cried on that floor, and when I stopped crying and I opened my eyes, I swear to you, I felt like this gigantic hippo had been lifted off of my shoulders. There was no more pressure there. My mind was clearer. My eyes actually saw that the sky was kind of blue that day.
I swear to you, I'm not joking around. I actually saw the color in the sky. I hadn't looked up, I don't know how long. And then I realized I have a plan because now I could believe in me.
And that was the difference. And that's why I'm saying you got to let this stuff go, is because as long as you feel sorry for yourself in any way, if there's any morsel of you that feels sorry for you, that feels sorry for you, you can't feed your family, that you can't pay your bills, you got to let that shit go because it's not going to change if you keep on repeating that over and over and over. You gotta let that go. You gotta go 100% in belief mode, belief in you mode. Do you understand me? This is not hype. This, this is, this is it. The way you get yourself out of any situation and you get yourself to be the leader, though, the person that you know you're destined to be and other people to follow you, is for you to believe in you. But no way to believe in you is to absolutely let all that crap go. I picked up my groceries.
I had to bring them home and wash them because they were full of dirt because they ran all over the floor. And I started feeling confident for the first time in a long time. Thank God, did that feel good. I felt confident for the first time in a long time. Still had no job, still had no money, but I could see that I could do it. I could feel that I could do it. There was the difference. And I remember really vividly How all of a sudden when I had to make those phone calls or send those emails and contact people for opportunities, it was different. Within a few weeks I was on an interview. Before that, I couldn't get none. Within a few months, literally like 2 or 3, I had a job that paid me more money than the last job I had years ago. I hadn't lost anything. I didn't start from the bottom. I went higher. And the difference was that I'd let it go. You let it go, and then you believe in you. You don't fake that you believe in you. You really believe in you. That's step one. That's the first thing you got to do. Let it go. Believe in you. The second thing you got to do to thank God for the internet and the power of all of us being connected on this beautiful network is you got to find people who have shared interest in you. Let's say, for example, you right now believe that you can— that you can make money during this whole mess. Playing, let's say, an instrument, a saxophone, or you're a pianist, okay, you play the piano, and that you can make some money doing gigs on the side and stuff like that, playing for people in the private parties, playing at clubs, playing anywhere just to make some money.
Cool, great, I believe in you too. But let me tell you something, whatever that first idea you have that you truly say, this is it, this is my— this is what I'm gonna go for, this is the light I see at the end of the tunnel, God bless you, go for it. But let me tell you something, I'm almost positive that ain't it. And this is good. Let me explain to you why. That thing, that I want to be a saxophone player, I want to be a pianist, that's going to be my job. That belief system, right? Here's the confidence. Here's the power of your confidence, right? It's going to get you off your ass. It's going to change the tone in your voice. It's going to lift up your shoulders, push in your spine, push out your chest, give you that air of confidence for you to have those discussions with people you need to have face to face. No longer sulking at home, no longer doing whatever you're not supposed to be doing. Do you hear me? Now you're going out there and you're saying, "I want to give a tryout for you. Let me play some music for you." So now you're going someplace, you're meeting with people you haven't met with before. You're traveling to places and interacting with people. Unless you travel these places that you never traveled before, All of a sudden, you have set into effect, into motion, all these new possibilities. And I promise you that that idea you have is not where you're going to end up. It's never that way. But it's that idea that started the— all of a sudden, the catalyst of all these new things, all these new things that are popping up, all these new opportunities, these new discussions you have with people. They see the power in you. They hear the power in your voice. They say, "I like you. There's something different about you. Hey, you want to do this here? You want to do that?" Yeah, man, I'll do that. Let's do this. This sounds fantastic. You still got that idea? Do you want to be a saxophone player or the pianist or whatever? That's cool. The world's greatest bartender? Great. But don't say no to all those other opportunities. It is your dream. It is your confidence that got you off your ass to allow all these other opportunities to happen. Do you understand? That's how it works. It's all about you. It's all about you doing it and believing in you. And this is not just hype, man. This is how it works. But you have to first fall down fall down in the street, your food is all over the sidewalk, people are walking by you like you're a lunatic. You don't give a shit because you got to let out these tears and you got to let it all out for you to then stand up and be. This is the greatest moment in your life. You may have been at a job that you didn't like before, that wasn't where you were supposed to be, and now you don't have it anymore. And maybe this is the blessing that you need. You know how you've heard these stories or seen movies where people lose a job and all of a sudden another opportunity comes? Matter of fact, I just got an SMS from a friend of mine.
I have to send him an SMS back.
He got fired from the company that we worked with, right? But because they fired him, they gave him the— they said, you know what, let me go put my energy into these things that I've been working with on the side. He went full steam. Do you know, in under 2 months All his other companies are popping up and doing fantastic. He's probably gonna make triple amount of money he was making 2 months ago in the old job. It is because he wasn't on the path he was supposed to be, and he needed his ass to be kicked and to push him to where he's supposed to be. You just got your ass kicked, and now you're supposed to be what you're supposed to be. Don't sulk. This is your greatest moment you've ever had. It's not about your education. It's not about you didn't go to school. It's not about you've been doing drugs. It's not about you've been—
haven't been unfaithful.
I don't care. The universe doesn't care. This is your moment. But let me tell you something: if you don't do anything about this right now in this moment, somebody else will.
Somebody else will. This is for you.
But you don't have to do it alone.
I want you to find people who have the same interest as you, who share your interests, who share interests of being a great saxophone player or pianist or something like that, who share your interests.
And there are people around you.
Find them, all right?
I want you to find them. I want you to contact them. I want you to call them. I want you to send them a tweet. I want you to send them a snap. I want you to DM them. I I want you to just get in contact with them. Matter of fact, take a picture of yourself doing that thing, playing your saxophone, saying, "This is how COVID-19 could kiss my ass because this is who I am." Take a picture of yourself, put that shit on Instagram, put that on LinkedIn, show the world. And let me tell you, people will gravitate to you. You ever heard of gravitas? That's you, baby. Everybody will gravitate to you. Let's see who you are. Tell everybody. Build your tribe. Build a tribe. Everybody's all about you. Do you understand me? This is how it works, and this is how we get you to where you're meant to be. And then I want you to contact me and tell me your story. I want to make you famous. I want you to be the— have the biggest tribe in the world. Contact me. I'm all over the place.
I'm on email, I'm on Instagram, I'm on LinkedIn, I'm on Facebook, on Twitter.
Contact me. Tell me you're not alone. If you don't have— if you feel like you need help, contact me.
I'll help you.
Contact me. Tell me your story. Tell me you need help.
We'll tell the story to the world. Watch the love come to you.
We're all in this together. We're one big tribe. I'm here for you. We're gonna get you where you need to be.
We're gonna get you you and everybody else to help you.
And this is gonna be the greatest moment in the world for you and for all of us. This is the blessing. This is it. But it's up to us. It's up to you to do this. And believe it, I understand you're hungry. I understand you're scared. I understand that. But if you're like that again tomorrow morning, did anything change? Did you change anything? Is anything going to be better? 7 years of me being hungry, 7 years of being broke. Trust me, baby, I know how to get out of this thing. But it's hard.
But it takes one thing that's natural for you, and that is for you to believe in you, because no one else is going to. So this is your time. It's showtime for you.
Go forth, spread beauty light. Go forth and spread beauty and light. You got it. You are the beauty.
You are the light. I love you. Until the next time.
