Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero. I've been gone a while. I've been, uh, sick with Bell's palsy. But listen, life throws things at you that you feel you don't deserve. How many things in your life happen to you and you go, why the hell me? Why not the idiot across the street? Why me? Or worse is, why always me? It's just crappy attitude. It's not the way to live life. But things are going to happen to you. You're not going to be chosen, you're not going to be selected, you're not going to get the promotion, you're going to get fired. All this crap is going to happen to you. And to me, my life is about my voice. My life is about talking. I talk for a living. I mean, I think that's where, so far in my career, my greatest value is my insight and my ability to communicate it. And then I get hit with this thing called Bell's palsy, which actually prevents you from talking pretty much. Bell's palsy is when half your face gets paralyzed, and that's what I'm dealing with, and I'm getting better. But you know what? Life threw at me what I needed. Think about it. When you had that crisis that you had and life threw something at you, at that moment you said, I don't need this, this is the worst thing possible. For me as a speaker, as a person who communicates As a person who is a confidant to many people, not being able to communicate, it's like it nukes my life. But yet now, several weeks into this, where I'm now able to talk finally a little bit, I realized that that was exactly what I needed. Total silence from myself. Drop the mic. Pow. I needed the exact opposite of who I was. When you lost your job, when you didn't make the team, when you weren't selected, you didn't get into that school You got divorced in a strange way. That was exactly what you needed. Think about that. That— and I know it sounds crazy, and I know it's hard for you to say yes to, but it's true. We only get what we deserve, and the universe somehow gives us something. Sometimes it's a blessing, a new job, someone to love us, an amazing life experience to make us smile. And sometimes it gives us something that is painful. Something that is hurtful in that moment, something that takes away something we cherish, like my ability to speak. But yet, that what it takes away, it takes away only because you became too attached to it, only because you're better than who you were. I became attached to my voice, and I still think my ability to communicate is important. But what I found again is that silence— is that when I put myself in a state of silence what people call meditation, and I don't talk, I found myself again. I found my strength again. So when a crisis happens to you and something horrible happens to you that is obviously the opposite— that's why it's a crisis, right? Uh, you're walking down the street, you hit by a car, it's the opposite of what you were doing, the opposite, right? What's the blessing there? Now, getting hit by a car is not a blessing, but maybe the time you spend in the hospital or the time you spend at home with yourself recuperating That is what the world needs from you. That's what the universe said. That's where you need to be, because you're walking or running away from where your destiny lies. My point is that your perspective on What happens to you is influenced by your attitude on how you handle it. I know it's kind of crazy words, but what it means is things are going to happen to you when they happen. Flip it in your mind and go, this happened to me to help me. How? And then embrace it. I think getting Bell's palsy— I'm never going to say it's a blessing, it sucks— but getting this now Today, damn, what a blessing, because it kicked my butt. As strong as a person I was, nope, this thing won. It took me down. Forget about Mike Tyson. I mean, Mike Tyson doesn't hit this hard, and life is gonna hit you harder. So look at the blessing in everything that happens that you don't want to happen. There is an amazing positive thing in there that was made just for you, just for you, to be closer to you, for you to find happiness, for you to find love. The love can be within yourself, the love can be someone across. You know, you should have this other perspective. Sometimes things happen in your life that wasn't even meant for you, but it was meant because you have to go through that to help someone else. You had to be that person in the wheelchair that bumped into that other person that then spilled coffee on another person, and those two people fell in love. All these things were intertwined. All our lives are weaved together. What I do affects you, what you do affects me. It can be directly or indirectly. Life is this amazing thing. Nothing happens for no reason. It's just like nothing just happens and there's no consequence and there's no reason for it. It all happens to benefit someone, whether that benefit is to take away their voice, to take away their ability to pay their bills. It's all to make you wake up and do something else. Be something else. Don't whine. Don't complain. Maybe in the first few seconds when it happens, it is— you're allowed because your world just got nuked. It just got destroyed. Bye-bye. But after that, rub your hands together. Oh man, what's coming that's going to benefit me? What's coming that I'm going to learn? What enlightenment am I about to have? And what's the cost of that? What am I going to go through now that's going to shred me mentally, emotionally, spiritually, to be sexually and then go through it with an incredible attitude of, "Hell yeah, because I'm gonna be better when this is all over." That's how you should go through life. And when you do go through life that way, What's gonna upset you? You look for the next calamity to happen in your life because things are about to get better. Go forth and spread beauty and light. Horrible things, negative things happen to you because you're better than who you were. I'll say that again. Horrible things have happened to you because you are better than who you were. I'm Thomas Anglero. Want to reach out, contact me? Just go to my website, anglero.com. I'd love to hear from you.
