Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero, and let me ask you a very definitive question.
Why not you?
You see people who are the CEOs of these mega companies, Why not you? You see these heads of state on TV, on the radio, making decisions in front of the press, people taking pictures of them all the time.
Why not you? Why not you?
What does it take for you to be that person?
Why not you?
There's no difference between them and you. They wake up in the morning, they go to the bathroom, they wash their face. So do you.
Why not you?
Don't you understand? There's no difference between them and you. There's no magical formula. They don't do anything special. If you know some of these people, if you've heard, if you speak to some older people and they tell the stories of where they worked in a corporation and they see somebody climb up the corporate ladder, which means that that person spent years working their way up and up and up to different positions and eventually they got to the top and they became the CEO. And then you have somebody who comes new into the company, they go, oh my God, That person's a CEO. Can you imagine?
But why not you?
There is no magical formula. There is no magical bullet. These heads of states are voted in. They all went to college. Look at Obama. He went to college. He smoked marijuana through college. He admits it. He had a lot of fun through college. He admits it. He became president of the United States.
Why not you?
Did you have fun in college? Maybe some of you smoked marijuana in college. Maybe that makes you qualified to be the president of the United States.
Why not you? Why not you?
You are qualified. You have the intellect. You have the charisma. You have the looks. You have the confidence.
Why not you?
One of the reasons, one of the things that are holding you back is that the people surrounding you aren't actually giving you what you need. They can't see you being that amazing person. They just see you as that little brother or little sister or that friend that I've known since I grew up. That's the image that people have. That's not negative. That's just sort of the picture they have. But that's that person's picture. That's not your destiny.
Why not you?
Everybody who's become president, every person who's a president today, Every person who's been— who's a CEO today, they have someone who looks at them as a little brother or a little sister or friend since high school or whatever. And they're still that, that person is still the CEO. They're still the president.
Why not you? Why not you?
You have everything it takes. Now, people don't have to compliment you. It's not like you have to have a life where everybody just keeps on elevating you. That's not how it's going to happen. The way it works is that everyone around you tells you all the time, that's not you. That's not you. And that's why it's going to be you. Do you understand? You have to grind your way up. You have to push yourself all the way up.
You have— you.
You have to believe in you. And that's why—
not you—
that's why it is going to be you, because you believe in you. Nobody around you has to compliment you. Nobody around you has to make you feel good. You know, you can have a compliment. You come home every single day and doing amazing things, but the people around you don't see you that way as being amazing. That's okay. But you're still a man. And you know what?
It is you.
It is you. I remember reading a book about Lou Geissner, correct me if I'm wrong, former CEO of IBM, wrote a wonderful book called Dancing with Elephants. It's all about how he turned around great IBM from this old company, the stellar company that was falling down, was literally a couple of days from bankruptcy, and he turned it around and saved it to be the great company that it is today. And he said, I was the man. I saved IBM, multibillion-dollar company, mega giant, brought it back, and it is the premier company that everyone in the world talks about. And I was the man who did it. I'm the CEO. I got out all the accolades. I got the bonuses. I got everything. And he goes, when I came home every single night to my family and my kids at the dining room table, No one listened to me. I didn't run my family. They all saw me as dad or husband or this person that we make fun of, or this person that we don't listen to, this person that we criticize. He wrote, and I quote, I didn't run my family, but I ran the biggest company in the world. How is this possible? The answer is that Lou figured it out. He asked himself, why not me? And then he went and did it and he became the man. You see, you don't have to— is never— the secret is from the people on the top is none of them have a perfect life. Just because you're the president of a country Just because you are the head of United Nations, but because you're the head of some huge committee, doesn't mean that your private life, that everybody worships you. Matter of fact, it's the exact opposite. So why not you? There's the truth. You think by watching all these people that they have the perfect life. It doesn't. Life is a balance. And that story about Lou, former head of IBM, is a perfect example. He's a CEO of the biggest company in the world back then. Most profitable company in the world, and when he came home, he was annoying. He was the annoying daddy. He was this frustrating husband. He just was a normal guy in a normal family, dysfunctional family, like every other family.
Why not you?
You have everything it takes. You got the looks. You have the energy. You got that twinkle in your eye. You got that confidence.
Why not you? Why not you?
Do you see it? Do you believe it?
Why not you? Yeah. Why not me? Mm-hmm. Why not me?
There's nothing holding me back. There's no one who can hold me back.
Why not me?
Matter of fact, I'm there already. And I'm creating my shot. I don't need to be given a shot. I'm going to create my shot. Going forward with artificial intelligence, with all the changes that we have, you don't have to say, give me a shot. Create your shot. There are so many opportunities now because everything is wide open. Let me tell you another secret. Heads of all these companies have no idea what's happening tomorrow. All they know is everything is being disrupted. Their company is going to change. Hence, there are new opportunities for new companies and new people.
Why not you?
Do you see it? I have a lot of respect for a lot of these Instagram influencers. Not tons, but I have a lot because they answered the question. They said, why not me? Why can't I have millions of followers? Why can't I, when I make a decision, I just put out a couple of words, I can make thousands of dollars paid by brands.
Why not me?
And then we have all these people who came out of nowhere and all of a sudden they're super popular, massive influencers, never heard about them before because they answered the calling to themselves. They go, yeah, why not me? That's all it took was that and the confidence to go, why not me?
Why not me?
Yeah, I'm more than good enough. And that's it. And that's it. And I guarantee you, when they're not on TikTok or Instagram being this powerful influencer and the camera's not on them, they probably have a husband, a husband or boyfriend or girlfriend who's annoyed at them, a mother or father who's pissed off at them. A teacher who thinks they're an idiot, because that's just the way it is. It's never perfect behind the scenes. So you're perfect. You're perfectly positioned to be that person.
Why not you?
It is you. Go forth and spread beauty and light in yourself. Because it is you. It really is you. You are the one we've been waiting for. You are the one who's going to lead us out of everything. You are the one who's going to solve and find a cure for cancer and COVID. You are the one who's going to blow the lid off of COVID You are the one who's going to solve the food shortages of an entire planet. You are the one who's to solve climate change. You are the one who's going to make sure that no one, no child goes to bed hungry ever again. It is you.
Why not you?
It is you. Just make that mental decision. It is me. Say it right now. It is me. It is me. Say it. It is me. I am that person. Say it. I am that person. Yes, I am that person. That it is me. Mm-hmm. Say it. It is me.
Yeah. Why not you?
Because there's nothing to stop you. I love you. I'm waiting for you. I'm waiting to follow you on Instagram and TikTok. Why not?
Why not you?
There is no reason why not. I love you. Take care of yourself. This is Thomas Anglero. Until the next time.
