Thomas Anglero uses a basketball coaching story to show how the energy you give out comes back to you. He argues that showing up prepared, smiling, and bringing consistent enthusiasm to work and relationships creates a cycle where others match your energy.

Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast.
I am Thomas Anglero, and I was at a basketball game, coaching a basketball game yesterday, and I realized that as a coach, that the amount of energy I gave during the game to the players, yelling at them, play defense, run, screen, box out, all these things you do as a coach, running up and down the court, literally almost running up and down the court, jumping up and down, doing everything I can, just screaming, yelling, doing everything as an active coach, that it was proportional to the energy of my players.
What I realized was the energy we give in life is proportional to the energy of the people around us.
That is true not only for me, but it's definitely true for you. Think about it. Think about all the people around you. Do they stimulate you? Are you frustrated that you're surrounded by people who are kind of boring? Or are you happy that the people around you are kind of boring? Do you feel that you want to be around people who energize you, who motivate you, who inspire you to get there? You cannot sit on your butt and wait for these people to show up. You cannot sit there and wonder, why don't these people do that for you? Why Why don't my friends inspire me? Why don't my colleagues who sit near me next to the cubicle get me all excited? Why don't the people who I drive with the truck with, because you maybe work at a delivery service, they don't talk about anything interesting. It's not about them. It's about you. You gotta be on. You have to be game time, right? You have to have game face. You gotta be 100% the whole time to inspire everybody around you so that what you get back, it may be 50%, but that's better than zero that you're close to being at now. It hit me yesterday. For the whole year, for the rest of my life, for me to have the most exciting life as possible, I gotta be all in all the time. Yeah, there's gonna be bad days. Yeah, you could be tired. But if you want to have the most amazing, most exciting life possible, you gotta be on. I mean, you gotta be excited. You gotta be into it. If you are now disgruntled, lazy, um, not into it or whatever, don't expect anyone to pick you up.
Nobody wants to pick you up. Probably nobody wants to be around you. You are the catalyst for your own life. If you're not excited, then your life's not going to get exciting. You have to be the excitement.
For your life, not others.
If you're married to somebody now who's not exciting, you haven't told them that.
You will never tell them that because it will probably break their heart, and that's not the way you are.
Respect. They're not exciting because you're not exciting.
Got it?
You don't have an exciting job. The job's not exciting because you're not exciting. And think about this: if you were excited at your job, if you were energized—
I'm not asking you to jump around, you know, like a clown. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying for you to be excited about your job, whatever way you are excited about your job. And even though, say, you're in a situation where you don't maybe like your job, then the right job will find you.
Somebody will say, "I want that person with all that energy.
See that person? Look how excited they are. Look how much energy they got. I want to bring that into my company. I want to have that energy around all my people. I want her to be infectious." with all our energy around my people, right? Think if you're a student going to school right now, right? You're excited, you're energized in class. Okay, maybe you're in a big classroom of 300 people, you can't really show, but it shows. You can see the student who's lit up as a teacher, right? I've done enough speeches that I know I can see people in the audience who is fired up and who's with it and who's not. Those people who are excited by what I'm saying, hopefully is good, Those are the people that I'm going to pay attention to. Those are the people I'm going to give extra attention to, and those are the people who I will give the opportunities to. Every one of your professors has opportunities. They know because the previous graduates, the alumni who they taught, are now running companies or working in companies who are hiring people all the time. And those alumni are going to professors, "Hey, professor, if you ever find, you know, if you ever have one or two star students, let me know." What do you think your professor is doing every time your professor is standing in front of the stage—
standing in front of you, sorry? She's standing up there lecturing you, teaching you, and she's looking all the time going, who is it? Who can I give this incredible opportunity to?
Who is it?
It's not going to be you if you're the person who has their head on their hand and on the elbow on the desk, leaning sideways, looking like they should be in bed. Half-dressed like a bum, looking like you haven't washed forever. Okay, maybe I'm pushing it too far on this one, but you know what I mean. As a student, you go to school like you're going to work. You don't have to be in a tie and jacket, but you go clean, you go looking sharp, make sure everything is ironed, and you're there to impress. And you're going to feel good about it. You're going to feel good about yourself. And you do that fired up and energized. Do you understand? You go to work, you don't go to work dressed up with dirty clothes, or you don't want to go to work wrinkled. You can, but then you have to tell some damn good stories. Don't make them up, right? People want to be around people who are infectious. Are you infectious? Are you the person that people literally wait for at lunchtime?
Are you—
think about—
I like to say that one again. Are you the person that people wait for at lunchtime to go to lunch? Do they say, we're going to lunch, you go, I'll be there in 10 minutes, oh, we'll wait for you?
You're the one.
Do you understand that? Are you that person? If not, get there. Get there about being excited about your life. How do you do that? You wake up in the morning with an agenda. You wake up in the morning with an agenda. I am so happy. I am so grateful. This is going to be a great day. My transportation to work, that commute to work, it's gonna be fun.
It's gonna be great. The people want to meet, phenomenal.
I'm gonna smile.
I'm gonna smile more and more every day. I'm gonna smile more and more.
I'm going to start keeping tabs on the amount of times I smile at everybody. I'm infectious.
That is your attitude.
That's what you tell yourself.
If you're driving a car, you got a commute, smile at the people next to you. You're passing people all the time.
Smile.
Matter of fact, even wave. You can get away with waving to kids. You see kids in a car, maybe they're playing on their mobile phone, they lift their heads, wave at the kids. It's completely allowed socially. It's not weird. Practice being happy.
Being infectious. Practice being infectious. That's who you are. Your life, the excitement in your life, the opportunities in your life are proportional to the energy that you give into your life. Be infectious. I think that's just— I think that's so powerful. Go forth, spread beauty, light, and be infectious. Until the next time.
