Thomas Anglero argues that constant mobile phone use destroys your ability to think, daydream, and connect with others. He urges listeners to reclaim idle time, look at clouds, talk in person, and exercise their minds to recover creativity and wellbeing.

Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero, and I want to share with you an epiphany I've had. And I'm not proud of what I've figured out, but I think it's going to help you. Let me ask you a question. When was the last time you just spaced off Spaced out, just stared out into the skies and thought big heavy thoughts, challenging yourself, questioning yourself, thinking really, really hard. And then afterwards you catch yourself going, "Oh, that was kind of weird. People don't do that." Maybe you were even talking to yourself, and then you probably were told when you probably were a kid, "Don't talk to yourself in public. People think you're weird." Let me tell you something. There's nothing weird with you. Matter of fact, you should be doing it more. Why? Because I realize that idle time, daydreaming time, fantasy time has been replaced by that damn mobile phone. Time when we should be contemplating the universe, where human beings innovate and start challenging things and saying that 1 1 does not equal 2. And over time, they're right, and it shifts our planet, it shifts us to another level. We all benefit from that genius, from that moment of daydreaming, from that moment of challenging the universe. I look around, And I see everyone on their phone, and it is actually the prevention of using your mind. We're not exercising our mind. How much time do you set aside every day and you say, I'm going to exercise my mind today? Probably not much to— what is he talking about? What am I talking about? The reason why we haven't elevated— we being everybody on this planet— the reason why you haven't elevated— you being your career, your love life, your marriage, your ability to be more talented— is because you haven't embraced that inner you. You haven't had a conversation with that inner you. You haven't spent time looking into the sky and letting the thoughts just flow. I remember being a kid with me and my brother. We would lay down, and my friends in the neighborhood, we would lay down on this abandoned car in front of the building, the apartment building we all lived in, and we would talk about the shape of the clouds. The shape of the clouds. Do you know how stimulating that conversation is? It— this is decades later and I still remember those conversations because we were creating reality. We were talking about things and thinking things we have never thought about before. We didn't judge each other. We were in awe of each other. We were embracing each other. We were creating life. We were creating shapes. We were creating friendships, we were creating bonds. If we would have had mobile phones, we'd have been laying on those abandoned cars in front of the building, but we'd not been talking to each other. And yes, our heads would have been looking up, but in between our heads and that beautiful sky would have been a mobile phone, and we would have missed that precious moment of building friendships, of curiosity, of innovation, of thinking. I'll ask you again: how much time do you spend training your mind, thinking, Not thinking about celebrities, not thinking about food, thinking the big thoughts. It is a muscle that you must train. Just like every day you should eat well, every day you should go for a walk, every day you should exercise, every day you should drink water, and every day you should sleep, every day you should train your mind to benefit you. Have you ever noticed that some of the healthiest looking people in the world, they train their mind. They allow their mind to come out in a physical form and they smile a lot. They go for runs and they're just giggling the whole time. What happens is their mind has taken over to the point at which they are always happy. And the end result is when you're in a state of bliss, you physically don't age, or at least it slows it down. And people wonder what is their secret. Do I have to run a marathon? No, train your mind. Put down the phone. Pick up the phone to talk to a friend. Matter of fact, put down the phone and go walk over to the friend's house and say, "Let's talk." And if that friend says, "Talk about what?" Go find another friend. And if there's no friend to talk to, there's always the clouds. In the sky. Prior to recording this podcast, I was looking in the clouds, and it always puts a smile on my face. It's my happy place, and it's free, and I could tap into it anytime I want because I know when I'm looking in the clouds, I am in my zone. I'm training my mind. I am filling myself with happiness. I am stopping the aging process, and all I'm doing is looking into the sky. Go forth and spread beauty and light. Lift your head, lift your spirit, lift your soul, and look into the sky and train your mind. Don't blame anyone. You're not a victim. I don't care what your situation is. Your bliss is right above you. Spend your time on you, loving you, and having fun training your mind. I'm Thomas Anglero. I implore you, don't take life so serious. Have fun with it, and you'll see so many solutions to things that you thought were so insurmountable, insurmountable, so difficult. It's right there in front of you. Let you help you. I love you. Until next time.
