Thomas Anglero argues that how you start your morning shapes your entire day. He recommends practicing gratitude when you wake up, standing in the sun, and walking barefoot on grass to ground yourself before the day pulls you in different directions.

Welcome to the Soul of Innovation podcast. I am Thomas Anglero, and this morning I changed my routine. I got up this morning and I went out into my yard because it was a glorious morning. As it is in the summertime, the sun came up super early. Maybe too early, shining hard, shining bright. And I told myself, I want to walk in my yard on my grass. I want to ground myself. I want the morning sun to warm me up. I want the morning sun to give me a morning hug and greet me with a day of endless possibilities, endless potential. No thought, no thinking about anything I thought about yesterday, no thinking about the dreams I had last night. It was and is beautiful. So let me ask you a question. When you wake up in the morning, do you think about changing your routine? What is your routine? As soon as you wake up in the morning, what is your routine? And when's the last time you changed your routine? Why do you do the same thing every morning? It's probably comfortable. Is what you know. First thing in the morning, gotta turn on that coffee machine, gotta have that cup of coffee, or at least start thinking about that morning cup of coffee, that they can't start my day without a cup of coffee. Who owns your day, you or the cup of coffee? Why don't you change your routine? So don't you want to be better? It's not that your routine is wrong, but don't you want to be better? Don't you want to find things in your life that are right in front of your face that you don't see because you haven't changed your perspective? Changing your day, your normal standard day, the way you wake up— when you wake up Do you give gratitude to everything and everyone? The most powerful way to wake up in the morning is as soon as you realize you're waking up or you are awake, before that first thought kicks in about the day, you give thanks. You say, I am grateful for waking up in the morning. I am grateful for breathing. I am grateful for existing. Then the second thing you do is change your routine. Look out the window. If it was a beautiful, glorious day, go outside. If you can't go outside, you live in an apartment building like me when I growing up, you open the window and you let the sun hit your face. Just stand there or sit there in your room at an angle where the sun's hitting your face, those morning rays that are absolutely beautiful. There are many cultures around the world that the entire community got up for the morning sun as it crests over the mountains in the distance. And as it came up, those first morning rays are said to be the most powerful, life-giving, DNA-changing, soul-blessing rays of the sun for the entire day. And entire communities would stand there with their eyes closed and allowing the first rays of the sun to bless them, to warm them, to reignite them, to put them on the path where they belong to be, to give them the mindset, this positive mindset, to remind them that life is about love. It's not about bills. It's not about neighbors. It's not about projects. It's not about bosses. It's not about kids. It's not about rushing off to work. It's not about cooking, it's not about cleaning, it's not about making the team. Life is about this moment. This moment that the sun, the sun's rays are warming you up. When was the last time you felt that? When was the last time at any time of the day you stood still and let the sun change your routine. I remember taking the train to work, and I would stand on the train platform, and as I walked to the train station, I would hope— and this is an above-ground platform— but I would walk to the train station and hope that I had just missed the train. And yes, a few times I could have made it if I ran, but I purposely missed that train to work. Why? Because the sun was blazing in the morning and I wanted to stand there on that open platform and now for the next 15 minutes or 14 and a half minutes until the next train came, I got to stand there in the sun with my eyes closed, no thoughts, no sounds but the birds in the trees. It was beautiful. I loved starting my day with that. If I didn't have a chance to do it when I got up, I'd make sure I did it at the train station on my way to work. And as the train pulled in, every single time, every single time, I would take a step back so I wouldn't get hit by the train. And I would look to my left and I would look to my right down the platform, and I would always see 2 or 3 other people doing the same thing as me, allowing the morning sun's rays change me. Go forth and spread beauty and light. Your life does not have to be complicated. So many of the most beautiful things, the most simple things that will bring you incredible pleasure, are as simple as changing your routine when you get up and allowing the sun to warm you on the inside. Warm you on the outside. It's free. I forgot how powerful it was this morning. Within seconds of standing in my yard on the grass with the wet morning dew between my toes, the sun's rays warming me up, I realized, God, what an incredible way to start a day. What an incredible life I have. What incredible opportunities are in front of me, and all I had to do was go outside and walk on the grass. I want you to go outside and walk on the grass and realize how blessed you are, how fortunate you are. It's not about money. It's not about all the thoughts that are in our head. It is about the moment that is right now. You taking care of you, for you. I love you. I'm Thomas Anglero. Until next time. Thank you for listening to that episode.
