DON'T Make THIS Mistake When Generating Life Insurance Leads

Tim Shilker breaks down five mistakes life insurance agents make with final-expense Facebook ads: weak creative that ignores pain points, not testing enough variations, killing ads too fast, scaling budget too quickly, and going solo without help. He stresses testing and consistency over rushing results.

Alright, what is going on? Ladies and gentlemen, in this video, I'm going to be overviewing the biggest mistakes that agents make when trying to generate their own final expense leads on Facebook. Now, if we haven't met yet, my name is Tim Shilker. I run the Life Insurance Sales channel. We put up free content to help insurance agents make six figures working from home over the phone. Now I also co own a company called Advanced Agent Marketing where we basically help insurance agents generate their own leads. And over the last three years or so, I've literally helped hundreds of agents start their own campaigns, run their own ads. I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Facebook myself. So I know a thing or two about how to generate leads and how to do it specifically for the life insurance industry. So what I'm going to be talking about here is five huge mistakes that I see people make all the time that, you know, kneecap them and cause them to not see as much success when trying to generate their own leads. Right? And ultimately, if you are able to figure this out, if you are able to generate your own leads, it looks like massively higher. Prof. A much better business and much more control over your lead flow, which ultimately will make you more money and give you more peace of mind. So without any further ado, let's dive into it, starting with the first mistake that I see people make, which is that they simply don't pay enough attention to the ad creative. Right now Facebook is a very visual platform. If you think about, you know, the last time that you went through Facebook or went through and scrolled on Instagram. It's not like it's all about the images and the videos and the things that you see, right? So your ad, when you run it on Facebook, is competing with all those other things, right? You're competing against a news article with a bullet flying past a former president's head and then the headline says, you know, assassination attempt on Trump. Right? Your ad is in the same place as that, right? And so in order to stand out and get people to pay attention to your ad, click on your ad, become a lead so that you even have a chance to sell them. You have to pay attention to your ad creative and you have to be really a master at capturing attention and converting it into a lead, right? Which takes a lot of, a lot of knowledge about your market and understanding what their needs are and what their pain points are, right? So, so what I see a lot of people do is they'll go and watch like, you know, a YouTube video like this, for example, there's one YouTube video in particular that's out there where, like, the guy that makes the video just gives you, like, a picture of a casket that just says, like, seniors. At the top, it's like a casket, and then up top, it's like a red background and just says seniors. Right now, I think everybody and their mom has run that ad at this point. And so if you're just literally running a photo of a casket that says seniors, you're not calling out any pain. You're not, like, really speaking to a specific market. You're not, you know, you're not. You're not speaking to their fears, their pains, their hopes, dreams, desires, which is ultimately what causes people to act and causes people to fill out a form, is when you tell them that you're going to help them not have something happen that they don't want to happen, or you show them how you can help them achieve something that they want, right? And these garbage ads that people run, they'll spend $20 on that ad. And then they wonder why they didn't get any leads, and they're like, oh, Facebook doesn't work. Right. But the key is the problem is if you want to see success on Facebook, you have to focus on the ad creative, and you have to spend time really getting this down and getting it right. And most of the work for ad creatives really comes in the research and the understanding of your ideal avatar, which is this just the person that you're actually going to be marketing to, like the. The customer you're going to be selling to, Right? So understanding who are they, where do they live, what is their age, what do they like, what do they don't like, right? What are their fears, what are their hopes? All of those things. And then crafting the message of your actual image or your video all around that, right? So people just throw up some random crap and they don't see success. That's the first big mistake that I see a lot of people make.
The second one is once they get, you know, maybe they'll. They'll launch a campaign and they'll test, like, you know, two ads, three ads, whatever, and then they'll just run that for months and months on end and their lead cost slowly starts to creep up, and they wonder why, right? If you want to see continued success on Facebook over a long, extended period of time, you have to be testing new ads always, right?
In my experience, running ads, you'll have. Usually what happens is you'll test, you'll Test. You'll test. You'll find, like, one or two winners that really, like, carries the performance and gets you tons and tons and tons of leads, right? Like, I'm talking hundreds of thousands of dollars of annual premium from just a few ads. But then over time, those ads will start to fatigue and die. So in the meantime, while you have these new big winners, right? It's kind of like the 8020 principle. 20% of your ads are getting you 80% of the results, but you're having to test to find more of the 20, right? So it's like you find this one ad that's working. That's the control, if you want to call it that, and then you're testing against it to find a new, better winner. And that, like, that process is what you have to do in order to see sustained success. You can't just rest on your laurels. Once you have one ad that's working, you want to continue to be testing to find those new ones so that you can consistently and constantly have a low cost per lead. So most people don't really test enough ads. You know, they just. Because, again, most people that are running ads on Facebook for life insurance are just life insurance agents, and they don't really know what they're doing. So they get one thing that's working. They have a great cost per lead, and then they just leave it alone, and they don't touch it for months. And then all of a sudden, like, their campaign stops working, and they wonder why, right? And so the key is, again, testing those ads consistently. I would recommend at least testing two to three new ads per week, even on, like, a low budget of, you know, 80 to 100 bucks a day. That way you can always have something new kind of like coming, right? So you're always working on finding the next best ad, the next new winner that's gonna carry you into the months and years forward. So the second mistake is people don't test enough ads. This third one is really funny to me.
Because just from my experience running Facebook ads and spending hundreds or even sometimes thousands of dollars on something, and then just to prove a concept.
I'll talk to people and be like, I spent $10 and I still haven't gotten a lead, so I shut my ass off, right?
This happens all the time, right? People spend $20, $30, and they go, it didn't work. Nope, I'm done. The thing about Facebook is you really have to spend money, right? And it sucks. But that's the game that you're playing. Facebook wants to make money. And they don't always just like give you great results out of the gate. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time. It has to optimize, whatever, what have you. And you really want to let your ads run for at least three to five days before doing anything as far as turning it off, right? Especially, especially if you're spending like $40 a day on a low budget. Like if your cost per lead is a little high, just give it time and just test and cycle in new ads. Right? But what a lot of people do is they'll just throw up a few ads. They turn on their Facebook ads, they maybe even let it run for half of a day and it spends a little bit of money and they're like, I haven't gotten any leads. What did I do wrong? It's not always something that you did wrong. It's the only thing that you're doing wrong is just not being patient. Right?
So that's something that I see people do a lot. And then the other thing too is a lot of times people will want to turn off the ads when they're like.
Not working on the weekend or something. The thing about Facebook is it rewards consistency. And if you are constantly turning off and then turning back on and then turning off and then turning back on, it causes a lot of issues with the algorithm and it gives you a lot of inconsistency. Oh, thumbs up gives you a lot of inconsistency with your lead flow, right? So if you want to see success long term, sustained, like you are getting leads to put into your business, just leave the campaign on. Unless you're like going, you're stopping work for like a month, right? But if I went on a week vacation, I wouldn't turn my ads off. I would just leave them running. Because when I come back, I'll have all these leads to work. I'll have a ton of people to call. Why would I turn my ads off if they're working, right? If something's working, just do more of it and keep doing it. Right? You don't want to shut your ads off because you go away for a weekend, or shut your ads off because it's going to be Christmas and you don't want to. You want to save, you know, $80 of the daily ad spend on Christmas. Like just leave your ads running and just leave them on consistently and just work the leads and sell policies. It's just that simple, right? You don't want to be flipping it off and then flipping it on. It's just going to totally ruin your performance, right? So don't turn your ads off.
Don't turn your ads off, basically is the point of that message.
The fourth mistake I see people make is they'll raise the budget too quickly. So a client of mine the other day was having great cost per lead. I mean, he was getting, I think it was like sub $8 cost per lead. It's like $7 cost per lead consistently on a fairly high budget, spending about $120 a day, $7 a lead. So he's cranking leads, getting a ton of leads. They're coming in at a really reasonable cost. And he's like, okay, I need more leads. So he went from 120 and then in one day went from 120 to 200. And it just destroyed his campaign. Like the cost just skyrocketed. The lead flow dropped. It was just a really bad situation, right? And what happens when you make these like drastic swings, these huge, like turning the campaign off or boosting the budget a hundred dollars, right? You get a lot of inconsistency in the results because Facebook likes consistency and they like people that spend money and slowly spend more money over time. But if I'm going, it would be like, for example.
If I'm buying something at the store, right? And every day I go into, let's just say I go to a restaurant. Every day I go into a restaurant and I buy one meal, right? Or let's say I have a family of four, I buy four meals for my family of four. Every single day I go in, buy four meals, buy four meals, buy four meals. And then the next day I go in and all of a sudden I'm like, hey, I need 500 meals. Like they're not going to be able to supply that and the quality is gonna go down, right? So you want to slowly increase what you're buying so that Facebook can adjust to it, right? So I recommend like scaling your budget like 10 to 20% a day instead of just doing like one big massive jump from like 100 to 200 or 200 to 500, just slowly doing these small incremental jumps, right? That's the fourth mistake. Now the last mistake kind of covers all of these things is a lot of people, they'll just like start running ads on Facebook from like one YouTube video. And they've never done it in their life. If you want to see success with something, you need to be working with somebody that has experience right? Now, this is something that I've personally done A lot in my life, and I had to learn it because at first I didn't do it. I was like a straight DIY guy. Like, I'm just gonna figure everything out, and that's the way it's gonna be. But over time, I learned that you can either spend time or you can spend money.
And I have. This is something I learned from Alex Hormozi, is like the fastest way to shortcut success is just buying experience and buying knowledge, right? So what I've done personally in my own life is invested lots of money in courses, right? Over the last two years, I've spent over six figures on courses and programs. That's no exaggeration, I promise you.
And that has allowed me to improve my success and improve my skillset in different areas of my life. Now, if you're trying to learn how to do Facebook ads, particularly for final expense, and just find somebody that knows how to do it, copy their formula, and then just use it, and then now you have that skill, right? So that brings me into my next point here, which is if you want to have us help you with Facebook ads, right, we literally set everything up for all of our clients with proven ads that we've already used ourselves. And no work proven ads, set them up inside of our client's account and then run the ads for them so that you can only. Only just focus on selling, right? You don't have to do any of the marketing. You don't have to run your own ads. You don't have to set it up. You don't have to do all of the techie stuff. All you have to do is just get the set up one time and then just work the system and sell policies. So if you guys are interested in, like, generating leads on Facebook, but you don't want to go through the whole process of having to, like, learn it and do this and do that, and you'd rather just have somebody do it for you. I'm going to include a link down below in the description where we'll literally again, set up your ads for you, run the ads for you, and all that you literally have to do is just call the leads and then work on your sales skills. I'll include a link down below in the description if you guys are interested in that.
