Why MOST New Insurance Agents Go BROKE! (The Netflix Theory)

YouTube video (Timothy Schucker) explaining the main mistake new insurance agents make: treating life insurance like a one-off sale rather than a recurring subscription. Schucker argues agents should focus on client retention, servicing policyholders, and generating referrals—comparing insurance to Netflix—so commissions earned up-front are preserved and chargebacks avoided.

What's going on, guys? In this video I'm going to show you the number one mistake that 99% of agents make that cause them to go broke and fail out of this industry. You're going to be learning the exact way how to basically avoid this mistake so you can guarantee your success in the insurance business and ultimately, you know, get on your way to making that coveted six figures that every insurance agent wants to make. My name is Tim Shooker. I run an insurance agency called Zoosurance where we provide free leads, daily training and everything that an agent needs to get them to be able to write six figures over the phone. So without any further ado, let's go ahead and jump right into this video. Right, so the number one mistake that insurance agents make that caused them to go broke, it all starts with the way that they think about the product, right? And I have Netflix written up here. You guys may be confused why I have this, but it'll all make sense in just a second. So most agents, they think about final expense, right? So they're doing telesales. I'll draw a little phone here. They're calling up all these people. This is probably the worst phone you've ever seen in your life. More like a banana than a phone. They're calling up all these people. Yes, this is a phone. And you know, they talk to them one time, they're going for that one call close. They get them to buy whatever. Yes, that's a phone they get them to buy. And then all of a sudden, you know, you never like they never call this person ever again. They just sell them, get them signed up, move on to the next and they just repeat this process over and over of like sign somebody up, right? And then go and find somebody else and then sign them up and then this person charges back and then they go and they find somebody else and then this person charges back and they're just on this vicious cycle of signing and charging back and signing people up and them charging back and all this crap that happens, Right? So how do you avoid this? And what is the right way to think about the business so that you can avoid all of that BS and actually see success? So.
Life insurance is more like a Netflix subscription than it is like a car, right? Or a one off purchase. Because the tricky thing, and this is where people get messed up is they get paid all up front when they sell a policy, right? So if I sign up Ms. Jones, I'm going to get my nine month advance. It looks like I just made a Thousand bucks. But really I'm getting a loan from the insurance company, right? So it looks like I just sold. You know, it's like, it seems more like the commissions are like a car selling a used car than Netflix. You may be confused. Like, how does this make any sense? Well, Netflix, what is Netflix? Netflix is a subscription, right? Insurance is literally just a subscription, right? It's like a Netflix subscription to peace and security for their family. So how do you retain clients instead of just going out and acquiring new business? Right? How do you retain your clients and get referrals from your clients and get them to stick on the books and get them to recommend their friends, Right? How did you hear about Netflix? Probably wasn't from an ad, it was probably from a friend, right? You went over to your friend's house, they put on Netflix, you watched Breaking Bad or whatever and you're like, oh, shit, I need to get this too. So Netflix is getting referrals. Netflix is getting referrals, right?
And so basically, if you can treat the sale more like a subscription, okay, I need to get you to pay this for 12 months. I need to get you to stick on the books. I need to service this client. I need to provide them with value, right? I need to actually focus on them, focus on the consumer.
Instead of focusing on the sale. And this is why everyone, like, everyone messes this up is they get paid like they're selling cars, but they're selling a product that's more like Netflix. And imagine if Netflix got you on a seven day free trial and then all of a sudden it sucked. You could just cancel Netflix. And that's exactly what happens, is people just cancel their insurance policy. And that's why all these agents get dozens and dozens and dozens of chargebacks and they end up underwater, right? So what I want you guys to do is really have a frame shift of instead of selling, focusing on the sell, focus on the consumer and focus on keeping them happy for at least 12 months and servicing that client. And if you do that, you will be avoiding the number one mistake that 99% of agents fall into, because most people don't think about it like a subscription. Hope you guys got value from this video.
