Dr. Kim Sukum explains that babies are born without a gut microbiome and acquire microbes from their mother during birth. The microbiome then matures over three years, shaping the immune system, vision, heart, and other major systems during the critical first thousand days.
Chapters
During the first thousand days of babies life, they have a lot of developing to do. They're developing their eyes, their sight, their heart, but they're also developing their immune system and their gut microbiome. I'm Dr. Kim Sukum, I'm a microbiologist. Babies are born without a gut microbiome, which means they have no bacteria in them in mom and utero. But when they're born, they get all sorts of bacteria just from birth, from mom, from the environment, from friends and family, all sorts of places. And all of this can seed baby's gut microbiome. And it'll spend the next three years maturing and growing until it looks like an adult gut microbiome.
