So those are the five mistakes that I see parents making all the time that lead to bossy behavior in their kids or that make the bossy behavior worse. A key here is to understand that we are supposed to be our children's North Star. We are their compass point. We are the sun and they're rotating around us, not us around them or them around each other. And this is because that's how they need it to be. It is us being in this position of being the compass point that allows them to rest and play and feel safe and have the time and space to grow. This is what Neufeld calls being an alpha parent. We are the natural authority. We are in the lead. We are the ones who are taking care of them and we must take the lead in responses to their difficult behaviors that actually are effective and help lessen or eliminate these behaviors. And if we are not the ones in the lead in these things, our kids will try to be in charge themselves.
