Kids don't listen partly because their brains are wired to focus on caregivers they trust, they can't pay attention to two things at once, and they need to say no to process their thoughts. Defiance is developmental, not personal.
Chapters
First of all, children have the instinct to defy us because their brains are literally wired to not listen to those that they don't feel connected to in the moment. This instinct is meant to keep them safe from harm, from strangers, and we want them to have this instinct. This instinct is stronger in young kids because they don't have the ability in their brain to focus on two things at once. For example, Nate was so focused on his toy, he actually couldn't hear his mother. He wasn't lying. Also, there are just times in children's lives where they're going to need to say no in the moment just to have time to think about what they think or what they feel or what they want. This is important for their development. Even if their life is good, they probably have to do what others tell them to most of the time, and they need opportunities to develop their own individuality and voice. Both of these instincts are natural and not personal. And when they first occur, they have very little to do with you, but you can make them worse.
