AI Todd argues that connecting with your kids before disciplining them reduces defiance and escalation. Make connection a regular part of home culture, not a one-time trick, to build strong bonds and cooperation.

Getting connected with your children regularly, but especially before trying to get them to do something is one of the smartest parenting practices there is. And not doing so is part of the biggest mistakes that I see parents make with discipline. We're not supposed to assume we are in connection with a loved one, especially our children. Children have strong instincts to not listen to somebody if they don't feel connected to them in the moment. The biggest day to day behavior problem that I hear about from my coaching clients is is when their children defy them or refuse to cooperate with them when they need them to. And most resistance comes from not connecting first. And I recommend to parents that they don't see this as a parenting trick, but rather a practice that they make part of their home culture. If you regularly take time to make sure that your kids feel connected, everything will go better. If you don't take the time to get connected first, expect to have a lot more problems with your kids and that often these problems are going to then escalate.
