Child defiance often comes from lost connection, not willfulness. Before making requests, briefly reconnect: enter their space warmly, get a smile or nod, show genuine interest. Ask for what you need when they already feel close to you.
Chapters
Most of the day to day defiance that parents experience is because their child is not feeling connected to them in that moment. The trouble is, most parents just assume their child is feeling connected because they're their parents or because we were feeling connected a little while ago. That's just not how relationship works. We should never assume connection or take it for granted. Kids lose their sense of connection with us in the moment for a lot of reasons. It doesn't mean they don't love us. No one feels connected to another person at every moment, all the time. The way Neufeld describes it is that we're meant to get in our kids faces, or at least their space in a friendly way that encourages connection. Get them to smile, get them to nod, show interest in what they're doing, and then if sometimes you need them to do something, that's the right time to bring it up when they're already feeling connected.
