When parents let kids call the shots, kids get bossy. Your job is to meet their actual needs, not their immediate wants. A child asking for ice cream for dinner needs food, not dessert.

One of the main messages I find myself giving the parents I work with is that it's not their primary job to make their children happy, it's their primary job to take care of them. Of course we want our children to be happy, and of course we want to treat them with love and respect. Just as a practical matter, it's important and essential to understand that our top priority needs to be what is it to take care of them in this moment, not what's going to make them happy in this moment. Sometimes when our children are not feeling quite right inside, they are going to come up with some crazy or at least childlike ideas about what's going to make them feel better, like certain foods or certain activities. They're going to be completely sure that an ice cream sundae for dinner is going to make everything okay. The thing is, a child is never satisfied when they're the ones taking the lead in getting their needs met. We need to figure out what is it they really need and then deliver it and really make sure they feel feel it. We don't leave it in their hands.
