3 Ways To Get More YouTube Subscribers | Channel Review

Trina Little reviews Elle McCann's YouTube channel and shows three concrete ways to grow subscribers: improving channel banners, trailers, subscribe buttons, and playlist thumbnails. She answers viewer questions live throughout the session.
Sometimes we can get so wrapped up into our work and think it is super amazing. But the one thing that holds us back from actually making our YouTube channel better is getting some outside perspective. So that's what I'm planning to do today. In this video, I'm going to be giving a live channel review to someone's channel to let them know three things they could do today to make their channel better and get more YouTube subscribers. Hi, my name is Trina. If you are new to my channel, and I started this channel to help creative entrepreneurs like you get on YouTube to grow. And having a YouTube channel will help you grow that business because being on video just facilitates that relationships, lets people get to know, like and trust you a lot faster than any other platform out there. So I have already picked somebody to review their channel. So I'm going to share my screen for, flip it over to their channel and give you the three things that I see right off the bat. I think that she could do to really reach more people and grow her subscribers. I already know that she has a goal, a subscriber goal to reach in quarter two, and so I want to help her with these three tips. So let me go ahead and share my screen and as I go through here, feel free to ask me questions because I will be answering at the end of the why. So this is Elle, and she does Shopify optimization. And so when I first go to her channel, the first thing we're going to see is the channel banner. Right? And so what I would definitely suggest right off the bat is Elle needs to have some kind of value proposition on this channel banner. Yes, it says Shopify tutorials, but what's the Shopify tutorials going to do for me? Why do I need to watch her Shopify tutorials? What value are these tutorials going to bring to me? Because that channel banner is your number one first impression. So you've got to be very, very clear in that channel banner so people understand whether or not this channel is for them. Now, your channel isn't going to be for everybody. You want to have a niche channel, which I think Elle has a great opportunity of having a niche channel, but she's got to make that very clear clear in her value proposition of her channel banner. And so the next thing, Elle does have a channel trailer. So let's just go ahead and watch this.
Hi, My name is El McCann from Curious Themes Web Development Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. I've been a Shopify expert for over four years now, and I produce weekly videos for YouTube every Tuesday and Thursday each week that show you step by step how to do different things with your Shopify store. I also will go into how to further market your store and drive traffic and sales to your site.
So she's doing pretty good here. I like to keep channel trailers under a minute, so she's good at 46 seconds. I think for Elle, one of the first things I would do to update this channel trailer is to give a hook or address a pain point to your audience. So what is your audience struggling with that they need you for? What's that first pain point that's really going to grab their attention because the next thing people are going to see after your channel banner is going to be your channel trailer and it's going to play automatically as soon as people click on your channel. So what is that pain point going to be that's going to make people listen to you and actually watch your channel trailer without clicking off of it. So think about that pain point, introduce yourself and then get into that value proposition again that you are going to highlight in that channel trail and that channel banner. Right. So unfortunately people really don't care about who we are. They want to know what you're going to do for us. And so by sharing that blatantly in your value proposition, that's one way you're going to instantly get more subscribers. One other thing, a side note that I would do is I see Elle has her branded watermark right here, which means people can click to subscribe. But what I would do is this is going to stand out for people. Like they see this channel icon but they don't really know what it means. What I suggest doing is making this look like a subscribe button. So create a branded watermark that is 800 by 800 pixels, make it this YouTube red color and have a play button there and write subscribe. People are going to see that and it's going to feel like it's a built in YouTube element. And so they're more likely to click on it and hover over it than just a photo of yourself. So the third thing that I would suggest for Elle to do is take a look at the highlighted playlist that you have. So this is kind of the second, the third impression people are going to get of your channel homepage. And she does have playlists, which is fantastic. But, but you can see how they can kind of blend together. They're not very enticing. I know these are some older videos of hers, but the thing that people click on the most is thumbnails of people where they can see the whites of their eyes. Very saturated thumbnails and very crisp thumbnails. These types of thumbnails are not going to grab people's attention by adding photos of yourself or making brighter colors in the background. That's what's going to grab people's attention when they come to your channel to want to watch more. And as far as playlists, the playlists have got to, yes, have keywords, but they've got to be enticing as well. So could this be shopify tutorials to grow your revenue or Shopify tutorials to grow your website traffic? Just categorizing your playlists like this isn't really going to grab people's attention. And. And when you suggest these playlists in your videos through cards, it's not going to grab people's attention either. So having some playlists, overall titles that grab people's attention, is really what you need to make your playlist stand out. So the three things that I would suggest for Elle to really focus on here on her channel homepage is updating her channel banner to have her value proposition again, addressing a pain point at the very beginning of her channel trailer, and incorporating that. That value proposition again into her channel trailer, Adding her subscribe button right here, Just adding a quick little image that you can make in Canva or Pic Monkey, and then updating her thumbnails for her playlist. So I'm going to stop sharing my screen so I can jump on here and answer all of your questions. So why don't you guys go ahead? I'm going to pull up the video to see what questions we all have. So go ahead, pop them in. I'm going to get to them here in a second. All right, let's see. Am I on the right video? Sorry, guys. I had, like, a meltdown right before this, and so things changed up. Here we go. Here's the right video. Okay, so feel free to pop in questions if you are watching the replay again. Leave me questions as well. Hello, Stephanie, how are you? Uh, so, yeah, a lot of the times we can get hung up, like I said, in our own box, and we don't think outside of the box. And so that's what I'm trying to do with these channel reviews. If you would like to be selected for a channel review, let me know down in the comments below. Also, let me know in the YouTube, the Facebook group. So I have a Facebook group called Video for Biz Crew. Feel free to join that. And that's how I'm really grabbing people's channels from there. So this is going to be happening every Wednesday. No, today's Thursday. This, these weekly reviews are going to be happening every Thursday at 1pm Eastern Standard Time. Now, I know today is 10, but I have an appointment later on today. So this is happening at 1:00pm Eastern Standard Time. Stephanie says I missed the bit about channel banner. What do you suggest? I suggest having your value proposition. So what value are you going to bring to a person who comes to your channel? And it's got to be very, very clear, somebody's got to land on your channel and think, this channel is for me, this is the value I'm going to get out of them. Kalista says, what are the best ways to create a channel banner? So you could use PicMonkey, you could use Canva, you could use Photoshop, and I know this gets a little tricky. The best suggestion I have for you is to grab the template off of YouTube. So I don't know, I'm going to go ahead and click over here to show you how you can do that. So let me share my screen and show you how you can get YouTube's template and talk about this a little more, because I had quite a few questions about this. I'm going to share my screen again. All right, so when you go to YouTube and you go to your channel banner right here, you want to go up to the pencil guide and you want to edit channel art. And what you can do is click on this and it's going to show you how to create channel art. And it's going to take you to, to the YouTube help page. And what you want to do is grab the current version of YouTube. I think this is it. It's been a while since I've done this. Here we go. So you want to go down to the image and size file guideline. You want to click on channel art template. It's going to go ahead and download. What you want to grab is this Fireworks one. And so you see right here, this is the template for a channel banner. The hard part about channel banner is optimizing it for tv, desktop, tablet and mobile. What I want you to focus on is this little guy right here. It says text and logo safe area. Just focus on getting your logo in here, your upload schedule in here, and your value proposition. So don't really worry about all of this back here because a lot of people are probably watching your videos and checking out your channel from the mobile, from a mobile or from a phone. So just focus on making it look best on mobile and don't worry about making it for a tv if you see mine. If I pull out mine. Let me see. Go back here. So for my photos, let's see. For this one you can see it's hard to see there. But for it to be on a TV you can see I have it's not actually fully out to the full TV image, if that makes sense. So just focus on this middle area right here because this is what people are going to see. Okay. I know it can be difficult. Just mess around with it. It does get easier. All right, let me pop over here if we got some more questions. Hi, Ross. Hi, Emily. Always looking for Insight. I'm your 4001 subscriber. Thank you so much. Fox Gaming legend. Okay, guys, so I hope that helped you out. I'm going to go ahead and wrap this video up for today. Like I said, I will be back here, oops, every Thursday at 1:00pm Eastern Standard Time. So I hope I will see you back here. In the meantime, you can catch me on Instagram at Trina Little or over in Facebook at Video for Biz Crew.
