Trena Little, a YouTube strategist, covers five quick improvements: live streaming, channel banners, end screens, homepage optimization, and bingeable playlists. She answers viewer questions in real time on what actually moves the needle for channel growth.
Thank you for catching the replay. If you're watching this now in today's show, I'm going to be sharing with you five things that you can do right now that are going to improve your YouTube channel. Or in other my goodness, we can tell it's the end of the week here or in other words, help you get more views and more subscribers. First, before we jump into this, I would love to know where are you watching from and what is your biggest struggle right now when it comes to YouTube? And if you're not here live right now and you're catching the replay, go ahead and hashtag replay with that question and we're going to dive in in just a moment. I'm doing something a little bit different. I got a standing desk over the weekend, so I'm standing while I'm doing this live stream. So you may see me moving a lot more if we have not met or if this is the first time you're catching one of my live shows. My name is Trina Little. I am a YouTube strategist and I run a YouTube management agency for online entrepreneurs who are ready to get serious with YouTube but want someone else to manage all the stuff and all the strategy and editing. Basically all our clients do is film the videos we tell them to film and we take care of everything else. I'm also the founder of Video Strategy Academy, which is my signature program that is part course that will teach you all the processes to creating a strategic YouTube marketing plan. And then we have weekly calls as well. In fact, today we're having a call with some friends of mine. They're going to teach us about getting camera ready with makeup. And so if you're female and you're wondering or male and you're wondering how to do makeup, that's what we're talking about today in our Video Strategy Academy call. Remember, you can catch me live here every Thursday. Today is Thursday at 11am Eastern here on YouTube and Facebook and you only need to save 30 minutes for me because I like to make these live streams short, short, sweet and impactful. Each week we are covering things like Getting started on YouTube, how to grow your YouTube channel, how to use YouTube in your business and how I how you can level up your content strategy as well. Now you heard me mention that I'm live streaming on Facebook and YouTube at the same time and this used to be such a pain in the butt for me to do. There was too much tech involved. I don't know much about obs and I don't want to figure it out. And my computer couldn't handle all of that either. So the solution that I found was restream. Restream sponsors this live show every single week. And it can actually allow you to stream live on up to 20 different platforms at once. If you have LinkedIn streaming, you can do that on LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube all at the same time. And I just love the ability to log into the website. Restream hit live and here I am coming at you. It's so super easy. I can even use Restream to scan schedule these videos in advance. So yesterday you probably saw that I mentioned this, promoted it and so if you want to try restream and save $10 on signing up, go to trina little.com restream and the link to that is also in the description of the YouTube video or in the comments of the Facebook video. And live stream is live streaming is actually one of the things that you can do to make your YouTube channel better. Before I talk to you about that, I want to say hello to some people. Hello, Double A's Crazy Gaming. Hello making to Holland. Hello Gary's Videos. Hello, it's just heaven. Hello, Deborah. Thank you guys so much for showing up here today and taking some time to watch my live show. I know you're all busy. I know you got things going on. I can currently hear children screaming about lunch downstairs. So if you hear like what sounds like children being murdered, it is just my kids trying to figure out what is for lunch today. Hello. Peanut plays thank you all for being here. So thank you. Feel free to. And the child is walking in. Honey, I am on a call. Okay, I am on a call. Okay, I gotta go. This is all about live streaming, you guys. You just gotta roll with it and make it work. Okay, I will get it when I'm done. Go. If you guys have questions about growing your YouTube channel or fixing or improving your YouTube channel, feel free to leave them in the chat. I will be answering them at the end of this video. So as I was saying before that four year old rudely interrupted me, one of the things you can do to make your YouTube channel better is live streaming like this and using a platform, a restreaming platform like Restream because it makes a connection with you all. I know AA scheming, you had an issue. How can you get your audience engaged? Well, they need to feel like they're seen by you and they need to feel like you get them. And by going live, by me connecting with you all here and saying hello to simply inspired and hello Emily Grace design. You all feel heard, you all feel seen and this really builds a loyal community. People that want to engage with you, want to talk with you, want to continue that conversations in the comment sections as well. And so I would highly recommend if you want to get some more engagement, try incorporating a live stream into your either monthly content plan or weekly content plan. I will tell you, going live every single week can get to be a lot of work, especially if you've got client work and mom duties and things like that. But I have noticed here with my live stream, more engagement, more people commenting, more people liking because I feel you all feel like we're connected. I'm trying to get the right words out again end of the week, but I can also show more my personality here in the live stream too. So you kind of get to know me on a different level. I'm not going to cut out my kid walking into the room. So you see how real this is. Whereas with pre recorded videos obviously that would have been totally cut out when I'm making mistakes over my words or I'm trying to figure out what to say like that's left in here on these live streams and you can see how you can relate how I am literally just like you as well. And so I highly recommend one of the things that you can do to make your YouTube channel better is to start doing a live stream. And restream is a great place to do it. And like I said, you can save $10 by just going to tr a little.comforward/restream to try it out, even just for one month. So the second thing that you can do to improve your channel as well is your channel banner. So I'm going to show some examples here. I think this shall work and I want to walk through kind of the best practices of your channel banners. Remember, next week is channel reviews. So if you are watching live and you're commenting and you're subscribed, subscribed. We will be dropping a form for you to submit your channel to be live reviewed by me next next Thursday and I'll pick two to three channels to review and I will always, always look at the channel banner. So I'm going to go ahead share my screen and show you what I look for with channel banner. So share my screen here. All right, so this is my channel banner. You probably recognize it, you've probably seen it and I want to point out the key elements and then show you some different examples. I'm waiting for my computer to catch up. So I can see if y' all can see this. Okay, it looks good. So with a channel banner, you need to have yourself highlighted, because when you're on YouTube, people need to feel connected with a human. They need to know who they're learning from. And that's why you will see that I am right here. You also want to highlight what value or what's the reason people should subscribe to your YouTube channel. This is your billboard. This is your marketing material. This is how you're going to convince people that this channel is for them and to click this subscribe button. And so you can see right here, when you come to my channel, it's all about helping you organize, plan, and create video content that drives traffic to your offers. Right? So I am focusing a lot on business owners and how to use YouTube for organic traffic. All right, so those are things you want to think about with your banner. You also want to make sure you're highlighting when you are posting that you are posting consistently and weekly. In fact, new videos every Wednesday at 9am you all know that. You all know I have a new video every Wednesday. You can play with your upload schedule and figure out what you want that to be. And you can say new videos weekly, but just promise then you know that you're going to have a video every single week. Another example is Mallory, who is a student of mine. You can see right here she is, she has herself on her channel banner here. Um, you can see what you're going to get when you subscribe to her channel. Improve your mental health with Mallory Grimsky every Thursday at 10:00am Boom. You know exactly what you're getting and when you're getting it. Just by landing on her channel within three seconds. A client of mine, Virginia Kerr's. You can see, there she is again, highlighting her. This is Virginia Kerr, video marketing coach. You know exactly what she does. Convert followers into customers with video new videos every Wednesday. Again, all three of those main points are highlighted in her channel banner as well. I've got two more quick examples for you. This is Hope. She is a student of mine inside the video strategy academy as well. Again, you're getting a picture of her and her husband who are the co hosts of this channel. You're seeing a new video every Monday and Friday. Living with joy and abundance on a shoestring budget. Right in your face. What you're going to get. And finally, another client of mine, Ashlyn writes a copywriter. You can. You can see weekly copywriting and creative business tips New episodes each week. She's also highlighting her expertise here. She's been seen in Creative at Creative Live, Forbes, Gold Digger, Self and Style Me Pretty. So those are some ways that you can start to improve your channel banner to get people to really understand what your channel is all about. Should they subscribe to you. I was trying to turn share. There we go. I turned my video off instead. So that's the second thing you should do is take a look at your channel banner and figure out how you can improve that. Simply Inspired said that would exactly be my kids doing that, which is why I never go live. It also makes that connection. You know that I feel you on that because it happens and so it does. It just makes you seem like a real life human. It means people really trust you more because you let those little things creep in. So what questions do you have right now about live streaming or channel banners? I do want to answer some questions before we jump into the next thing. I want to make sure you that are here or if you're watching the replay, if you feel comfortable in understanding these two steps. Because I really want you to have a better YouTube channel and reach your goals here on YouTube. So I'm going to take a minute, see if you got any comments, drop them into the comments real quick. Hello and Alaska Homestead. Nice to have you here. All right, so if you guys feel like you're good with that, the next thing that we are going to talk about are end screens. Let me know in the comments. Say yes or no if you know what end screens are. Do you all know what end screens are? Because this is really critical for growth on YouTube because you need to be recommending videos for people to watch. You need to get people to binge watch your channel because if you can get people to watch video A, all right, they sit down, they watch video A and you can get them to watch another video, video B. YouTube's going to recommend video A to more people because they then watch another video. So YouTube knows if we recommend video A, that person would then watch video B which is more watch time on YouTube. And that's what YouTube wants because the more watch time that they get, the more ads that they can put on your videos and the more money YouTube is going to make. So you really need to make sure you're incorporating end screens into your videos. But more importantly, you need to make sure you're pitching what video they should watch next. You should by no means wrap up your video and then leave 20 seconds of a blank screen just to Another video like that's not the way to do it. I can show you for example, what I do. And so if we. I'm going to pull up a video real quick. It's probably going to play here, but I want to show you what is the right way to add end screens. Okay. Because there is a right and a wrong way to do end screens. You really want to be pitching what they should be watching next. So again, I'm going to get it pulled up here and share my video, my screen real quick with you. All right? So and if you listen to what I'm saying right here, you will hear me tell you to watch a specific video. So I'm going to turn this up a minute so you can hear it every single week. And if you are ready to commit and show up consistently, watch the video that's on your screen. Did you hear me say if you're ready to continue to commit, watch the video on your screen right now? Because I'm sharing the five things I do every single week to help me continue to grow my YouTube channel. So you see how I'm pitching it. I went right from that last point, right from that last teaching point without giving any signs that my video was over, not saying in conclusion or in summary or that's it. I went from teaching that last point to then pitching that video. Because the more verbal calls action you can give them the the more they're going to click on that. And what we have seen is if you can get end screen click through rates to like 10 12%, we really start to see a snowball growth effect on your channel. Because YouTube sees that you're getting people to binge watch YouTube and they're going to recommend more of your content. So I highly recommend you taking a look at your end screens. You can even go into your analytics. Let me see if I can pull that one up quickly. I think I am logged out of my account. I'll see if I can get in real quick. But it will show you your end screen click through rates and how well you're doing. There we go. We got that popping up how well you are doing at converting people to watch another video. So I think I have my analytics pulled up here real quick and I will show you. Let me share my screen again. This is quite interactive here. You will see right here in this particular video I showed you, if you go under engagement and you come down here, my end screen Click through rate was 6%. My channel average is about a 3.9. That's like for all of my videos across my channel. And this video had a 6% click through rate, meaning 6% of people that saw that end screen click to the next one. And that's what you really want to be looking at. And you can see that for every single one of your videos when you go into the engagement tab. And like I said, you want to be shooting. If you can get a 10 to 12%, YouTube is going to start recommending this particular video because this video gets them to watch another one. Let me make sure. Are you guys tracking what I'm saying? Are you following what I'm saying here? Because this is really key to making your YouTube channel better. So I see. Emily says these live streams and your videos are very helpful as I'm getting my YouTube channel relaunched in August. Congrats. Deborah says, love end screens but can't use them in my videos for kids. I definitely need to think ahead. Yes, absolutely. Kyle says, Yep, I finally put them in. Awesome. Kyle making it in Holland. Great tip. Hi. Hello there. Okay, good. It looks like we're all crazy Double A's. Crazy gaming. Yes. I have created an end screen graphic for my videos recently. That's fantastic. All right, awesome. It looks like we're all doing well with that. So you need to be making sure you're including end screens at the end. The fourth thing that you can do is update your channel homepage. So let's walk through what that should look like again. I'm going to pull up those examples that I shared with you and we're going to go through what should your channel homepage look like. So if we go back to my channel and we look at my homepage, what you want to be doing is really highlighting this value proposition. Right. I'm telling people you're going to learn how to help. I'm helping you organize, plan and create video content that drives traffic to your business. So you want to have playlists featured here on your homepage. So you can see I have growing a YouTube channel for beginners. How to start a YouTube channel for the most success. Everything you need to know for your first YouTube videos. This is kind of like if you think of like the Disney Channel, all the different shows that Disney has, you can tell I have kids and I'm on Disney. Or if you think of Bravo, which is mom's channel, you can think about all the different cities of Real Housewives would be what you wanted to feature here because this gives people a quick glimpse again of the type of content they're going to get Here, let's show again Mallory's for example, you can see the latest from Mallory instead of just saying uploads, she says the latest from her how to improve your mental health for 2021. And my best tips from 2020 managing your anxiety when you're stuck at home and bored. How to talk to your parents. You see how she's creating these series of videos so somebody who comes to her channel can quickly see what they can expect from her channel with Virginia. The same way we've got uploads, we've got the Instagram strategy. You need to grow your Instagram account, make your first Instagram reel, everything you need to know. And then we have all her shorts down here under the median. The same thing. Organizing and making the most of your pantry. Extreme frugality tips for saving money fast debt free living again. We're categorizing and naming these things. Searchable titles, searchable playlists because these playlists can show up on the homepage insert and suggested. And finally, Ashlyn is the exact same way. We have the secrets behind email marketing and writing better newsletters. Setting up a client management system your clients love how you can write better website copy. How to become a better copywriter for your business. This is how you want to start organizing your channel homepage so you can really feature the types of content that your viewer can expect from you. Do you make your end screen template? So Shira says, do you make your end screen template on Canva? I have, but I have a video editor that does it now. But 100% you can make it in Canva. Students of mine have made them in Canva. Just use the thumbnail dimensions and then edit that in when you are editing your videos and your editing software not on YouTube. So that should answer your question. SF Dream Beauty making a Holland says my end screen strategy needs improvement. Yep, I always think about my end screen strategy when I am doing my video game plan. And so before I even turn on my camera, I already know what I'm going to be pitching at the end of that video. Born Victor says, what are the end screens? I'm failing to add end screens and cards. I'm using a smartphone. End screens are clickable videos that people can watch next. So that's definitely something that you want to be looking at as far as SEO score, YouTube keyword research keyword research is such a small portion of what's growing YouTube channels right now in 2021. It is really important to make sure people are clicking on your video. So click through rate Audience retention are people actually watching your videos and that end screen element as well. So I would actually spend more time doing those three things than keyword researching. Let's talk about this last thing that you can do to make a better YouTube channel, because these are things you can do right now. Obviously we can't fix your audience retention on older videos, we can't fix your content strategy on older videos, but these are things that after we get off of this live stream, that you can do right now. Creating bingeable playlists. You want to think about creating these three to five video playlists that your audience would want to watch back to back to back to back. Because again, the more you can get people to watch a bingeable playlist, watch one video after another, the more YouTube is going to push that content to more people for you. You don't have to do the work if you're making YouTube happy. And what makes YouTube happy is that you are getting people to watch multiple videos. So again, you can create as many playlists as you want. We'll go back here to my channel real quick and I will show you, for example, my calendar is telling me it's time for lunch. You'll go right here to playlists, and you can seriously make as many playlists as you want. So if we look at all playlists, is it going to let me created playlists, all of my created playlists, most of them have between two to six videos. And I'm pitching them, right, how to manage a social media strategy in 2021. So that has all of the videos you'll see right here. You'll come up here, and because it's in a playlist, it automatically dumps you in from video to video to video to video. And I'm making sure this video makes sense for them to then watch this video, which then makes sense to watch this video. And we're getting text messages, then makes sense to watch this video. Okay, so when you're making these playlists, it doesn't mean you have to strategically be creating like video one, part two, part three, part four. It's just thinking about the viewer and what's the viewer's journey going to be? What would they like to watch one after another? We also have another one right here. Let's say take these steps to start your YouTube channel again. If you get dumped into this playlist, you will see that video, then the right way to upload your video and then how to set up your channel. Make the perfect YouTube banner in Canva. So when you're thinking about these playlists and you're featuring them on your channel homepage. Like I talked about before this, that's how you can start creating these bingeable playlists, these bingeable videos that is going to get YouTube to recommend your content to more people. So with that being said, I am going to open it up to questions trying to get caught up here on where we're at. Alright, so we were there. Double A's Crazy gaming says yes. Trina, my channel exactly looks like this. Thank you. It has my playlist channel channel perfect. That's amazing. How to make a good intro channel trailer for a vlogging channel. So with a channel trailer you just really want to feature in 30 to 60 seconds or what the viewer can expect from your content. You really need to pitch the value. They don't care about you right now. They want to know what are they going to get from watching your videos. And you need to do that in about 30 to 60 seconds. Let's see what else. Tripping with tea. We create playlists. Fantastic. You can promote them, you can share them on social media. When you have playlists, you can create pins on Pinterest for them. You can put them in your blog post, you can put them in your description box of your videos to really get more traffic to them as well. Mickey in Holland I love that Alarc's ads have been taking over your YouTube as well. Yep, they know who I am. SF Dream Beauty says, how would you make the end screen videos clickable? If you use a Canva template. So what you do is you put the Canva template when you're editing. So if you're editing an imovie, you edit your video, you put that Canva template in your video for the last 20 seconds. So the Canva template would be on your timeline, your editing timeline down here and your video would be up top so that you could shrink the rest of your video to fit on top of that graphic. When you upload it to YouTube, that's when you add that clickable video. You can't add that clickable video until you upload it to video to YouTube. That is a YouTube feature. Emily says when do you need to start creating playlists? Is it when you first start or when you have a few videos on your channel? When you, as soon as you have enough videos, start creating a playlist, even if it's one video and you know you're going to add to this, create it with that first video. Guri videos. Can I add a playlist from another channel if I don't have many. Yeah, because if that person starts in your playlist and you created this binge session because you created this really great playlist that your audience loves, you'll get credited for it too. All right, trying to check. See what else questions that we have. Trippin with T. So should playlist about the hotels. I'm not sure what you're saying. I may need a little bit more information on that to answer that question. Roxanne says this is very helpful. Thank you. I'm so glad that you found this helpful. If you want to go do these things on your YouTube channel here today and tomorrow, and then when I drop the form for you to submit your channel to be reviewed, I'm doing channel reviews next week so you can maybe make these updates and have me give you feedback on these updates next week. So keep that in mind. Take action here and get it reviewed by me. Kyle says I have basic titles for my playlist, like games, for example. Do they need to be better? Yes, absolutely. You want to think about playlist titles the same way you think about video titles. Now. What do we think about video titles first? Video titles and need to be clickable. When we're creating video titles, we aren't creating it for the algorithm. We don't want it to be how to write a blog that doesn't make your video stand out. And amongst all the other videos that talk about how to write a blog, you want to think about how can you make this title cause people to click on your video? Right. How to write a blog in 10 minutes or less. Write a blog that gets more traffic to your website. Write a blog that sells your services in five minutes or less. Right. Those are more clickable. There's more value there. You don't need to worry about SEO as much in the title because we aren't creating videos for robots. We're creating videos for humans. Humans are the people that are clicking on your videos, and if they don't think your video looks enticing from the title, they're never going to click on it. So you want to think about playlist titles the exact same way. Okay, well, we're almost at 30 minutes already, and it looks like I got most of your questions answered. If you got more questions, feel free to leave these on the replay of this live. I'll get back and I'll come through to answer questions. I did do a complete compilation video yesterday on my channel all about the things that you should be doing on your YouTube channel. Right now to see success, I go into more detail of these things that I talked about. It is about a 50 minute video, but it's literally got four of my best videos in the past three months to help you grow on YouTube. So if you're trying to figure out how to get more views, how to get more subscribers, make sure you check out that video and watch it the whole way through. Because it's got everything, literally everything that you need to know inside of there to get started. And then if you want the steps that I go through with every single client to make their YouTube channel better, you'll want to go to trina little.com roadmap to start improving your channel now. In fact, I would highly recommend getting that, check that roadmap, doing everything in that roadmap. It's about 15 pages. It's got video tutorials on it as well. I think the end screen question is answered in a video tutorial. Inside of that, go to trinalittle.comroad because that's going to give you everything that you need to do. Okay, y', all, I think that just about wraps it up. Remember, if you want to start, if you want to start streaming and doing live streams like this, making a connection, answering questions one on one with your audience, this is how you're going to get engaged. Go try out restream. Save $10. Go to trina little.com forward/restream.
