7 Things I'm QUITTING To Grow My Business

Trena Little shares seven things she quit to grow her business, from her agency role to perfectionism and comparison. She discusses how panic attacks and guilt held her back, and why joining a mastermind group became crucial to her progress.
Let's face it, there is a lot of crap that is spewed out there into the world about how to successfully grow an online business. And I'll admit I was guilty following some of these gurus advice tips as well. For far too long. I had my first ever panic attack two years into my business because I put so much stress on myself. Again as an enneagram3 to do it all and do it all perfectly. And guess what I've come to realize. It's taken too long to realize this though. Hustling and working more hours does not equate to success. Nope. Just does not compute. In fact, when I started doing less in my business in 2020 because the children were home and we were all at home, my business actually thrived. And I'm here to tell you today, you don't have to do all the things in your business either. Course creation, coaching, done for you, services, speaking on stage, consistent social plan, and on and on and on. Does not need to be done to have financial stability in your business. And I don't know about you, but that's the main reason I created my business to have some financial stability. And it hasn't been easy for me to figure this out either. In fact, I had to really take a step back at the end of 2021 and reevaluate where I was even going with my business. Because let's be real, the last two years have been pretty freaking hard. And while I still found myself working half of what I used to work, I was still doing a lot. Not just in my business, but outside of my business as well. And all of that didn't really catch up to me until the summer of 2021. I had another panic attack. And I think that panic attack over the summer last year really caused this kind of spiral for me. I felt like I fell into this funk. Things were going amazing in. I had the best business year ever last year, but I didn't feel that passion anymore and I wasn't excited for my content anymore. I started to honestly feel like a fraud. I even went to my mastermind in November, which I've talked about quite a few times. But what I haven't shared is I felt in a funk there as well. And it caused me to really pull back from everybody and kind of hide in my room most of that week because like I said, I was really feeling like a fraud and not really myself. So I took a step back in December, in January. So in January, in February, I had to really check myself again and realize I needed to be focusing on the things that were passionate for me that I loved to do because I had gotten away from that. And I ultimately believe that's what caused that panic attack spiral is not leaning in not to doing the things I love for the whole reason for me creating this business. So here are the things that I've been committed to quitting in my business that has really allowed me to not only elevate myself, but take my business to that next level. Oh, and make sure you watch this entire video because at the end I am going to share one thing that I've actually added to do better in my business. First up is my agency. Yeah, I had to quit my agency now. Yeah, we still have the agency, but in December I took a lot of time with my team team to systematize and process and sop the crap out of it. And now my team does it all. I'm hardly in my agency. They know exactly the way I think because I took that time to train them to think just like me. And it's going great. We've had two clients just this month hit 10k YouTube subscribers and they are doing it all on their own without me. I check in on them every Monday during a team call. But I've been able to take myself out of that agency workflow and it's allowed me to have more time to have fun with this content here on YouTube. Next, I had to quit certain people. So this just means following certain people on Instagram or on Facebook or even on YouTube. And it's not that I don't like them, it's just as an enneagram. Three, I continue to spiral into comparison factor for me, just eliminating that option at all to even seeing it, to compare myself with certain people, that was what was going to work best for me. So I could keep my blinders kind of like on my own paper. And it's really allowed me to again feel myself and not allow that imposter syndrome to creep in because I felt like that's where it was mostly popping up when I was following people that I felt like, wow, they're doing so much better than me. They started after me and I must really suck at life. So just taking that off the plate helps. I've also had to quit perfectionism. And you may have noticed my YouTube videos are a little bit differently here. I'm trying to keep these YouTube videos much more simple, much more raw, much more me sharing about this process that hopefully you can learn from and not making these videos super perfect. Can I ask, do you relate with me if you feel this sense of perfectionism in your business too? Type the word perfectionism down in the comments below. So I'm not alone. But I had to accept that. Listen, I wasn't going to do my launch perfectly. We launched back in February and I had so many big ideas and so many things that I wanted to do through the challenge and the launch that I didn't get off the ground. And for a while that would have caused me to spiral. Like, this launch wasn't the best it could be. This challenge wasn't the best it could be. I didn't have this, this and this that I wanted to have. And so I have really try to, when I hear myself saying that, take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Which also leads into if you caught my podcast episode the Video refrain podcast a few weeks back, I share all the details about my launch and how it was the most successful launch we've ever had. And we hit our first six figure launch and I had to actively tell myself that this is great, great job. Because for me, typical Trina would have been like, oh, again, spiraling. I could have done better. You only hit six fig and three year ago Trina, two year ago Trina, that's all she ever wanted was to have a six figure launch. And here is 2022 Trina saying, oh, that wasn't good enough. You weren't good enough. You could have done better. And so, and just accepting that perfectionism is going to rear its ugly head at one point in time and I have to actively quit it and tell myself I am doing a great job and to stop thinking about that because perfect doesn't even exist. Okay, let's talk about the next thing that I had to quit because I'm almost certain you are a sufferer of this as well. And it is Shiny object syndrome. Go ahead, tap that like button to admit you suffer from Shiny object syndrome. And what that means is you're going along, you're doing your thing, you're working on your project and then bing, somebody mentions a new strategy or a new platform or reels, and you're like, okay, I gotta go do that. And it deters you away from what you were initially planning to do. Been there. I actually talked about how in my last video I did that last year around Cyber Monday when I heard my friend Christina talk about Black Friday sales and it totally messed up our plans and our business for the end of the year and our Christmas vacation because yeah, I suffer from it as well. But I've been actively trying to quit it because it doesn't allow me to give my full focus on an actual project. So while yes, I would love to be utilizing TikTok right now in my business and I would love to be utilizing reels right now in my business, I have decided for me, focusing here on YouTube, you can see this year we've doubled up to two videos a week is what my plan is, at least for the first six months of the year. Then we're going to look at the first six months and see, okay, do we have a system and a process down? Do I have enough time now in my schedule that I can add TikTok or Reels without stressing myself out? Because YouTube has been the 1 driving factor in my business that has grown my business. It is where I've stayed consistent to grow my email list, grow my client list, grow my student list, make digital product sales. And so if I am not focusing here on YouTube, I am not going to make that revenue in my business that I want to make this year. So my little tip here is if you hear about a new social media, a new feature or something pop up and you're like, oh, I need to do that to see success. Pause. I've had to do this with purchasing courses as well. Pause. Sleep on it. Take a day or two to sleep on it and if it's still nagging at you, then maybe it's okay to take a look at it. But don't just think jumping on that next social media platform first is going to allow you to grow exponentially. It could, but it could also take you away from the revenue generating tasks that you were doing and lose out on money that you could have made if you just stayed the path. Who next up was a hard one to quit. But it is guilt. If you are a parent, you can totally relate to the balance of mom guilt as well as business guilt. And I have a five and a seven year old. It is my five year old's last year home before kindergarten and there have been some Fridays that I've had to work to catch up on a few things. And to tell you the guilt is real. Like right now I'm filming this on a Friday and I had his grandparents pick him up from from preschool. I felt guilty. Then I realized it's a bigger picture here, right? We need to realize there are going to be times that we need to focus in on our business because I know we just had a full week in Disney one on one time. Without me even doing my business right. I was at a conference for two days. But the first three days, all my family and I know we have another trip booked in April, and I know we have a full vacation, June. And so I have to really start to balance that. Like, these little Fridays aren't necessarily going to be the thing that makes our breaks everything but the full picture, the fun times. The reason I'm building this business is so we can do these trips and we can have these longer weekends and we can have this vacation. And so I've had to actively talk to myself when I feel guilty, especially. Oh, let me tell you, the guilt really comes into play when I'm up here in my office working and my kids and my husband are downstairs and I can hear them and, oh, the guilt is real. But they're having time with their dad, they're having fun. They probably won't even remember this when they get older. What they are going to remember are the fun times that we actually have. And so I've had to actively quit letting that guilt sink in. The next thing that I had to quit, and it's been hard. I'm still working on it is devaluing myself. Luckily, I've had a coach that has been able to remind me things like, Trina, what you do is great. You are smart. You aren't, you know, this fraud that you think you are. Because like I said earlier, I went into the spiral at the beginning of the year and that was kind of part of it. It was me thinking, you know, I am not worth what I am charging. Nobody's going to want to buy anything for me. Nobody's going to work with me. And I had to. I actually have a mindset call with a mindset coach as well, and to talk to her through it, because it's a hard topic for me to talk about. And I'm sure you can relate as well. But for some reason, if we don't get exponential results or we don't get our clients exponential results, sometimes we feel like then we aren't good enough. But when we see other people talk about exponential results from their clients, those tend to be outliers. And when I take a step back and I look at all of our clients, we do have clients that had exponential results, but there's an average there, right? And so I've had to stop devaluing myself and stop thinking that my time wasn't worth it and that, absolutely, I will give you some free feedback in a DM or absolutely, I'll do that for free, because my time does matter and my expertise is good. And even though some conference organizer may say there that there were no qualified YouTube female educators, that to speak, we are qualified. And again, I just have to remind myself that. And I have to quit thinking like that. All right, Remember I told you there was going to be a bonus and I was going to share the one thing that I have added to my business, and that's been taking a leap, taking a chance and investing into a mastermind with people who are much freaking smarter than I am. Jumping into a mastermind is something that I did at the end of 2020, and it was freaking scary because it was the biggest investment that I have ever made in my business, ever. And I had had quite a few bad experiences with business coaches and masterminds, but fortunately enough, the mastermind that I joined was beyond valuable. I know for a fact that I made back my investment on that mastermind tenfold, not even in actual physical money, but in mindset, in education, in personal growth, because I learned all these other people that were doing online business and growing as two were struggling with the same things that I was struggling with, and then I wasn't alone. So that tied back into devaluing myself and the perfectionism and the guilt, because we were all talking about these issues and we were all dealing with them as well. And I truly believe that mastermind, not even like the actual education and the feedback from the coach, but the community, the connection, the conversations that I've had with these people were really what allowed me to elevate my business to this next level that I never thought was possible. Not only am I quitting things in my business, but I'm really taking a more minimalist approach to my business as well. So make sure you watch the video that's on your screen right now, because I walk through all the things that I'm actively doing and I've been doing for the past year to really take a minimalist approach to business, because I believe that's another factor to me leveling up my business and being able to double my revenue for over four years now. So click that video and I'll see you over there.
