Business owners who want to use their YouTube content to grow their business or in otherwise generate more sales and book more clients from their YouTube content should not be following the YouTube ranking factors that you hear from most YouTube educators here on YouTube. If you are listening and implementing what they're saying, don't expect to see those leads and those sales that you are hoping to see. Putting time into your YouTube content because business owners need to use a different tactic when it comes to ranking ranking your videos on YouTube. And that's the tactics I'm going to share with you in this video today. Hey there. Welcome back. If you're new to my channel, my name is trina. I'm a YouTube strategist and I help course creators and coaches use their YouTube content to generate more leads and sales in their business. Let's not waste any time and get into the YouTube ranking factors you should be focusing on. As I said, my goal is to help you get more sales for your digital products and courses and book you more clients. What you're generally going to hear on YouTube when it comes to ranking in YouTube is you want to find a keyword that 1 has low competition and 2 high volume searches. Well, it's just not that easy to do on YouTube anymore. I'm not saying that YouTube is saturated, but that is not the tactic as a business owner that you want to go after because you are trying to be strategic and get ROI out of every single video that you create. And just picking one topic and doing keyword research to find the best keywords isn't what's going to feed your business the best. As a business owner, you need to be creating specific content that your ideal viewer is searching for. When I say ideal viewer, I mean that person who is most likely to buy your, offer your course, your digital product, your one on one services. And if you aren't sure what an ideal viewer is yet, I highly encourage you to watch this video next because I deep dive into figuring out your ideal viewer and the importance of knowing that here for YouTube to make sure you're not wasting your time on videos that won't make you sales. So let's get back to this keyword ranking thing. As a business owner, you should not be creating one off video. So searching one keyword, coming up with that video title, writing that video, pumping it out, next keyword. You instead need to be thinking about a series of videos that easily feed in one to one to one to one. There's two reasons why you need to be thinking about this. The first reason Is obviously the algorithm. One of the most important keyword ranking factors that YouTube is looking at for overall your channel is are you creating a binge will series on your channel? Are you getting people to binge watch stay on the platform longer? Because if YouTube sees that people go to your video and they only watch 10 seconds and they leave the platform or they go to another video, your content isn't serving YouTube. And while you may have the best keyword or you've set up your video for the best ranking on YouTube, YouTube is still going to bury it. Because just the perfect keyword isn't the only piece that goes into these YouTube keyword ranking factors. The other piece of this is creating bingeable content to make the algorithm happy. So instead of, like I said, creating one video at a time, you want to think about a series of videos that you can create. If you look at my channel, we are currently in a YouTube series, more specifically a YouTube series on how business owners can use YouTube. So I started way back with why it's important to use YouTube, the biggest mistakes business owners make on YouTube. I also talk about the keyword research process that you should do. I'm going to be talking about the script writing process, the planning process, the filming process, the promoting process. And so you can see how this takes any viewer who's thinking about getting started on YouTube through this entire journey that they're going to want to watch each video that I come out with, or when I lump it together into a playlist, they're going to binge watch kind of like Netflix video edition after video after video. So this makes YouTube happy, right? Because you're creating bingeable content, you're keeping people on the platform longer. The second thing that it does is it warms up your potential lead. If you can get somebody to watch more than one video from you, each video they watch, they become warmer and warmer and warmer. This increases the likelihood that they are going to want to go to your offer page or opt in page or lead magnet, wherever you need them to go to help you grow your business. So again, instead of thinking about keyword research and the ranking of one particular word, we want to be thinking about the keyword research process of an entire series. And again, since I've been building this series out for you, I did a video. The last one that I published was all about how you should be digging in to building keywords based on a series. I'll link that video up here. You can watch next. The next thing I want to talk about, keyword ranking factors is as a business owner, it is not your goal to go viral. I know that seems like what you're heard and people say, you know, once you go viral, all your answers, all your prayers are answered, right? Unfortunately not. The thing is, as business owners, we've created an offer for a specific person. And what happens when we try to be something for everyone? We end up being no. 1 for everyone. So what you are even trying to rank on YouTube for should be very specific. And it shouldn't be this very general topic that can go viral because let me tell you a little story about my current channel. It is dead. 100% dead. I am trying to bring it back to life. And let me tell you why it died. Back in 2019, I got into this mindset that I had to prove my worthiness here on YouTube. I was talking about how to use YouTube as a business owner, and I had less than 40,000 subscribers. And in my mind, in this YouTube education space, I felt that people didn't take me seriously. The thing is, with my less than 40,000 subscribers, I was making half a million dollars. In my business, the goal was to get leads to my YouTube production agency where I planned all the content, the strategy for my clients. I edited it up, edited the videos and uploaded them. And I was doing just that. We had over 10 clients in my agency that I never spent a dollar on ad promotion for this. It was all coming from my YouTube channel. But I got in my head, imposter syndrome started to sink in. So I started to find keywords that I could rank for and grow fast. Well, these videos took a little bit of time to take off because again, I created these in 2019. And here's the bad news where we stand in 2023. There are about 14 videos pretty much from 2019, where the sole purpose in me creating them was to grow my channel to the masses. And this totally took my channel off the trajectory of. Of attracting business owners who wanted to use my YouTube agency. And what has happened now that these 14 videos have accumulated over 1.7 million views, it has moved me in the algorithm to attract the wrong people. Instead, what has happened is YouTube has now put me in this little bubble in the algorithm for beginners wanting to start a YouTube channel, like anybody wanting to start a YouTube channel. And more specifically, people who basically want to start YouTube to make quick money. And this is not my audience at all. So as these 14 videos continue to get views into the end of 2023, right now, those videos keep telling YouTube these are the people watching my content. These are the people watching my content. So it keeps putting those old videos in front of new people, driving the wrong people to my videos. So as I create my new content, speaking specifically to business owners, when I put this video out, the audience that I have now, the majority of them aren't interested. YouTube says this content is no good because your audience isn't watching it. But I have built a channel for the wrong audience because of my imposter syndrome of needing to grow more views and more subscribers to look like I know what I'm talking about. So I took a big step in accepting the direction my channel has gone. And a few weeks ago, I deleted or privated all 14 of those videos and got rid of 1.7% million views on my videos. Because these videos, these keywords that I was ranking for, was not driving potential clients and potential sales to my business. This is why you can't just pick whatever keyword you think you can go viral for. Because if you go viral for the Wrong person, your YouTube content is not going to pay off. Because the people watching your videos are not going to want to work with you, are not going to buy from you, because they aren't the right person. So I share this cautionary tale with you. To get very clear here in the importance of understanding your ideal Viewer here on YouTube and not worrying about going viral or every time you publish a video on your channel, it hits number one out of 10 in your analytics, you need to really be thinking about what is your audience searching that you need to be creating and then find the keywords around that. An even better example is, here's one of the videos that I created to go viral. And it did. The problem is, if you look at the comments of this video, it's full of crap comments, negative thinking, YouTube is out to get it. Just not my people, not the people who are going to work with me, not the people who are going to realize we have to adjust strategies when we need to. We need to give YouTube what it wants instead of complaining about what YouTube is doing to us. Instead, this particular video I put out performed below average across my channel, but it was targeted for my ideal viewer. Not only does this video have amazing comments on it from my people, this video generated $24,000 in revenue in my business in 48 hours. So again, I really want you to think about the YouTube ranking process that you hear across YouTube and think about how is this ranking on YouTube going to affect your content in a way that you're going to attract the right people, the people that are going to buy from you. Because you're not creating content here on YouTube to just create content for fun. You're using this as a sales generating machine, a lead generating machine. And when you're just picking haphazardly a keyword that you research and you try to rank for virality on YouTube, it is going to kill your efforts of getting leads and sales. Now deleting these views to get the algorithm to reclassify me isn't going to happen instantly. It's going to take me proving that this is the right person for me as I put new content out as it's not collecting any more views on those older videos. But I did see pretty much within 48 hours. One of the big signals that YouTube was understanding this change for me is I went from making about $2 a day on YouTube with those extra 1.7 million views to making about $9 a day in monetization even after deleting all those views. Because instantly YouTube started to see who was better for my channel once those videos were removed. And that signals to me that YouTube knows my audience is a higher quality viewer now because brands are going to want to put ads on my videos now that I am readjusting it more for business owners as opposed to those people that are trying to start YouTube to just start a YouTube channel to get rich quick. So we will check back in about 90 days. Hopefully by the end of 2023, we will definitely see a change in my YouTube channel and I will keep you updated. But let's talk about the specific metrics you need to be looking at as well to help you understand how to rank in YouTube specifically for your ideal viewer. When you go into your analytics, one of the first metrics that you should be looking at is your click through rate. Now this is going to tell you how well your title in your thumbnail is. Getting your ideal viewer to click. This means you need to really think about how you are titling your videos. So when I work with my clients and my coaching program and they provide me a thumbnail and a title to look at, one of the biggest mistakes that I see is we just have a general title like five dating tips. All right. Five dating tips for who? Five dating tips for high school kids. Five dating tips for college girls. Five dating tips for single men. Five dating tips for women over the age of 50. Right? Just putting out a video five dating tips is not going to tell your audience, hey, this video is for you. Click on this and watch it. So when you're thinking about your title and your thumbnail, you need to be thinking about how you are marketing your video. Basically, your title and your thumbnail is your marketing package to scream out to your ideal viewer, this video is for you. When that person clicks on that video. And the second metric we're going to talk about is audience retention. And YouTube sees this is the person most likely to click on the video and watch it. The algorithm is then going to be able to find more people like that. If you are just saying five dating tips, anybody's clicking on that video and they may be leaving within the first five seconds. Because maybe you're creating a video on five dating tips after the age of 50 and a high school girl clicks on it because she sees five dating tips and she's like, well, this content isn't for me. And she's gone in five seconds. So the algorithm thinks, okay, this video was only watched five seconds. Maybe the quality of the content just isn't there and it can't figure out who is the best person to watch your video. So you have to do that in your title, in your thumbnail. Now, before I move forward with audience retention, I will tell you, best click through rate range, YouTube says is anywhere between 2 to 10%. Our goal in my channel right now is a 5% click through rate. It's going to be different depending on every niche. In fact, I would love for you to share down in the comments what is the click through rate of your last video. But what I will tell you your goal is going to be figure out, look at your last five to 10 videos and get an average. What is your average click through rate? Then I want you to focus on making that next video like 0.2% better. So let's say your average is 4.5%. I want to challenge you for your next video to be a 4.8%. All right, so you're going to be competing with yourself on your click through rate and not worrying about what other people are doing, but finding a way to improve your click through rate. All right, Audience retention is the second metric that you should be watching to help you rank in YouTube better. Because again, YouTube is going to put videos at the top of search that people click on and people watch. Even though you may have all the best tags and keywords to rank in search, if people aren't clicking on your video and people aren't watching your video, YouTube is going to bury it. So you have to be thinking about these other ranking factors. When it comes to your content, ideally, you want to see about 40% of your video watched in your average retention. And this isn't always an easy feat. I see different ranges of audience retention for all of my clients. I was looking at one of my clients, Jane's channel the other day, her audience retention of Chef's Kiss, immaculate. But then when you look at my audience retention and I've been doing YouTube for, you know, seven, eight years, it can be better. But again, I really contribute that to having the wrong audience being sent to my channel. So I'm hoping as I readjust in the algorithm, I will see that audience retention get better. So again, something you need to be thinking about if your audience retention isn't doing so well. Is your title in your thumbnail attracting the right Viewer? Right, the five dating tips for women over the age of 50 instead of just five dating tips. And are you sharing really good content? Are you getting to the meat of the content quickly? Within, you know, 10 to 15 seconds? I'm going to be sharing how I write my script in my next video to make sure you're thinking about audience retention as you're planning your videos. So make sure you're subscribed for that video next. But you need to get people to the end of your video if you want to continue ranking in YouTube search. Generally, the next question that pops up is, well, how long should my videos be? Well, the other metric that YouTube is looking at is overall watch time on your channel. So let's say you put a three minute video out and people watch 100%. That's only three minutes of watch time. As opposed to, let's say you put a 10 minute video out and people watch 50% of that video. That is now five minutes of watch time on your channel. So there's no like perfect length. You just want to think about how long does this video need to be to deliver on the promise of your title and your thumbnail? There shouldn't be fluff, there shouldn't be, you know, chitter chatter or whatever you want to call it. You should be giving your viewer pure value to show your authority and build trust with them that you know what you're talking about and you can help them get a win. So that was that third metric you want to be looking at too is are you accumulating more watch time on your channel with each video or each month? How are you collecting watch time now? Another metric that people will generally look at are views. But again, more views don't always equal quality views so what you need to be looking at when it comes to videos getting the most views? What's the audience retention look like? Are people getting to the end of the video or not? Maybe the title and the thumbnail was attracting the wrong person. What are the comments of that video? Are they engaging comments? Are they comments that you can have conversations with if you're not getting comments? When I share how I write my script, I'm going to share different ways that I add engagement into my script. So maybe there's a way for you to ask meaningful questions in your video to get people engaging in the comments. Or you can also pop your own comment below your video that ask a question to get people engaged. You're not going to want to just say like subscribe and comment because nobody's going to do that because they don't have a reason to. Again, just because you're getting views doesn't mean it's from the right people. Because remember my cautionary tale of my channel? 1.7 million views had to be deleted because this is attracting the wrong people. So what's the best way to build your YouTube content strategy? Knowing the importance it takes to rank in search for the right people? Watch the video that is on your screen right now. Because I deep dive into specifically how I build a content strategy for my right people for an entire year's worth of content ideas. And make sure you are subscribed to this channel if you want to continue using YouTube to grow your business and make more sales from your YouTube videos.
