Is a Lifestyle Business Still Possible in 2026? My Honest Answer After 11 Years.

In this solo YouTube monologue, Trena Little reflects on her 11‑year journey building a lifestyle business, challenging the popular myth that such businesses can run on autopilot and generate seven‑figure passive income. She recounts starting with online courses in 2015, shifting to a YouTube‑focused agency during COVID, and ultimately burning out before rebuilding a coaching practice that aligns with her life. Trena identifies three critical, often‑unspoken components for a sustainable lifestyle business: (1) calculating a personal “enough” revenue number based on real expenses and desired take‑home pay, (2) accepting a slower, individualized growth pace rather than chasing viral success stories, and (3) establishing firm work‑hour boundaries and response‑time expectations with clients. She also shares her simple marketing system—producing one YouTube video per week—as the engine that consistently attracts clients. Throughout, she blends personal anecdotes with actionable frameworks, urging viewers to perform a financial baseline exercise, set clear limits, and focus on steady, realistic progress.

I keep seeing this topic come up online and it's about, is a lifestyle business still an option? Like, can you actually build a business that funds your life without it taking over your life completely? And I feel like I have the answer to this one because I bought the original lifestyle business way back in 2015. But follow this framework, buy my thing, and I'll show you how to create a business that lives on autopilot while you go sip Mai Tais on the beach. And I chase it hard enough to almost wreck myself. But 11 years later, I'm still here. Last year I had the best year in my business yet. So yes, I believe a lifestyle business is still very much possible. But there are 3 things that nobody who's selling you the dream is actually telling you. I'm gonna give it to you. Let's talk about what we were told about this dream lifestyle business: passive income, the courses selling while you sleep, having a laptop sitting on the beach making 7 figures because you decided that's what you were gonna do. I drank all of that up back in a webinar in 2015. It's actually how I started this whole thing out, but it's not how I'm ending it. But let me break down what actually happened for me to get where I am 11 years later. I started selling online courses just like everybody says, and I thought a course would get me to that 7 figures in no time. In fact, It's probably the reason why my husband agreed to actually let me quit my job because I sold him the dream as well. But I couldn't do it. And part of it was just life. I had little kids at home when I started my business. I had a 1-year-old and had my second child that first year in my business. So for the first 5 years in my business, my work consistency was up and down because babies, toddlers, they're gonna wake you up throughout the night. They're gonna wake you up random times throughout the night. They're gonna wake you up early morning. And that's not really a great environment for deep thinking and strategizing in your business. So I had very limited hours those first couple of years, and not a lot of peak headspace to work on it. That dream they sold never told me about a 3-year-old that would get out of his crib 7 times a night. So then the next piece, I went from courses to building an agency. It actually started during COVID People suddenly had all this time, they were ready to start a YouTube channel, and they asked me to just do it for them. So I was full YouTube strategy, scripts, editing, uploading, optimizing thumbnails, monthly reports. And I grew to a team of 5. In that year that we took the agency to a team of 5 was the closest year I ever got to 7 figures. But here's what people don't tell you: my profitability was garbage. And a lot of agency models' profitability is garbage as well because you have so much overhead because as you're scaling it, you need to hire more people and there's a higher turnover rate and you're training them. Agencies are just brutally hard to build profitably. And then the lifestyle that happens with an agency, you no longer get to become like the content creator. You are now a manager. You're managing a team, you're managing employees. And I wasn't doing the strategy anymore, which is what I loved. And what I loved doing was having that one-on-one time with my clients talking about their YouTube strategy. During this time in my agency era, I was so stressed out I had panic attacks, and my face eventually broke out in rosacea. And I really believe the cause of the rosacea flare-up had to do with all the stress from the business. So at the end of 2022, I burnt the whole dang thing down. So is the lifestyle business era dead? No, the lie version of it is though. The passive, effortless, manifest a million version, that's what's dead. A real version is still possible here in 2026. I am living proof, but I found there are 3 things that you have to get right to make it happen. And the first thing is what changed everything for me. You have to find your enough number. If you don't know how much you actually need to make in your business, a real number tied to how you want to live your life and run your business, you will be on a treadmill forever chasing sales, never feeling like enough is enough. Because more never has a finish line. And take it from me, for example, I never knew how much I wanted to make. I just assumed 7 figures, but I never really got into the nitty-gritty of what did I really need to make. Because somewhere along the line, this messaging between manifesting 7 figures and also like a 7-figure is the definition of a successful business has been hit across our head. And if someone is telling you to manifest your way to a million, Girl, run as fast as you can the other way because that is not going to happen. Every single dollar you make in your business will take work, and to get to 7 figures is going to take 7 figures worth of work, no matter whose system or framework you're gonna buy. Anyone's telling you install this system, use my framework, and instantly make a million is lying, and I'm going to say that plain and simple. So this is what you need to do, and this is what I do every year with my clients when we're planning for the new year. I force them to sit down and answer what do they actually need, real expenses they have in their business and in their lives. What do they want to take home? What is their take-home pay? And you know what happens when I force them to do this exercise? The number is a lot smaller than what they initially had in their head because we always think we need more because That's what's instilled in us at the moment for some reason. My number, when I finally sat down to do it honestly, it broke down to closing around 100 clients for the year. That's less than 2 clients a week. Just 2 yeses a week is what runs my entire business. And once I realized that, the panic and the stress of it all was gone. So do this exercise, whether right now or tonight. List all of your expenses, business and in life, what you want to take home, maybe what you want to save, save what you want to retire. That is your number. Then you need to divide it by your offer, whether that's coaching clients, one-on-one services, courses, and that's all you need to sell next year. And I'm going to guess, tell me the number down in the comments. What is that number? How many things do you have to sell? Because I'm going to guess it's a lot smaller than you initially thought. Now, the second thing that you must do is about accepting the speed it's going to take you to get there, because comparison is where this whole thing almost broke for me. The hardest part for me was watching people who started their business the same time that I did, or after when I started, and to see their business blow up, but also what they were showing Instagram-wise. Maybe not what was really happening behind the scenes, but let's pretend they were actually getting really successful because during COVID times, there was a huge boom in online courses because so many people had free time and they were investing in online courses and doing online courses. This is where I was spending my time being a mom with no child care and not being able to put any time into my business because I was with my kids 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, locked up. But now here we are, 6 years after that, and things have really changed online. People aren't home anymore and have extra time. AI has totally changed the online business space. A lot of those COVID boom models are struggling hard right now while the turtle is still working and moving forward. Now when I look back to all those people who started when I did back in 2015, 2016, 2017, a lot of them aren't still even in business anymore. They've pivoted, they've folded, they've gone back to traditional jobs. 10 years in and I am still here. I'm not running the hare pace, I am running the turtle pace. And I've accepted that and I've realized everybody's going at their own pace and you've just got to kind of keep your eyes on your own race or your own paper. The third thing that you need to do to have a lifestyle business that's realistic, and this one is going to protect the other 2 that we just talked about, because your number and the pace that you grow this business at means nothing if that business can reach you at 9 PM. So the biggest thing that separates my agency life from my coaching life Our boundaries. And these boundaries were set on day one, and they are very loud and very clear. My boundaries specifically, I let my clients know I am online Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 3 PM. Clients can get unlimited questions, audits submitted, and I will respond within 24 to 48 hours during that time period. I'm usually pretty quick, but you never know if I have a kid sick at home or what's going on. So there is very clear I have 24 to 48 hours to respond. And it's not that I'm giving them less service. My clients get more of me because I'm not fried and burnt out. My boundaries aren't walls against my clients. They're the structure that lets my business hold my life so everything doesn't come all crashing in. So I challenge you to do this exercise now. Write down the hours you want to work, put them in your welcome emails, and be very clear with your clients about those hours. Clients respect your boundaries when you state them loud and clear. I had somebody DM me just the other day and we were having a conversation about building a business that we actually loved. She said she wants to build a business that's retirement-proof, meaning she loves working, she loves her job, she still wants to be doing it in retirement. She just doesn't want it to run her life so she can be nana or go on vacation. And I think that's really important to think about, to build a business that you love at a pace that doesn't burn you out with the revenue that you actually need to get to go do the things you want to do. Starting to get pretty warm in this car. So I'll tell you the biggest reason why my lifestyle business works. I focus on making one YouTube video a week, and that is my entire marketing strategy for my business. It is the system that runs my sales engine. My YouTube videos are how clients find me. They binge my content, and that's when they show up ready to work with me, wanting to apply because of the strategic videos here on YouTube. Now, if you're wondering, Trena, what does this entire system entail for you to be on YouTube once a week? I did an entire 22-minute training for you, and that training is on your screen right now to go watch.
