Could be the key to your YouTube success. In this video, I'm going to show you how to read your YouTube analytics and the most important numbers you need to be looking at if you want to grow your YouTube channel. Now, you might have looked at your analytics before and not known where to get started. You may also not even know you have this analytics section in your YouTube channel to really help you understand how your audience is responding to your content. One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first got started on YouTube was not understanding my analytics and, and learning how to read them so I could improve my content for my viewers. One of the biggest pieces of analytics on YouTube is audience retention. The better your audience retention is, the more YouTube is going to suggest your.
Video, the more they're going to get.
Your video out to new people. So I want to show you some of the four key metrics that you need to look at in YouTube analytics so you're not overwhelmed by all the numbers. And you can look at the most important numbers to help you shift your YouTube channel strategy. So I'm going to flip it to my screen and walk you through how you can look at these numbers and.
What you're actually looking for. So once you log into your YouTube channel and you go to your creator studio, you want to go over here to your analytics. This is where you're going to see all the important data that you want to track that I'm going to show you how to. Now, you can track your data by the last 28 days. You can track it for the lifetime of your channel for the last 90 days. I generally like to do the last 90 days because it gives me a bigger time frame instead of the last 28 days is a kind of short glimpse. So the first thing I always like to look at is audience retention, and that's right down here. And then you can select the video that you want to check out the audience retention on. So I tend to like to look at my most recent videos. So I'll go in here, I will go to the upload date so that it shows me it in chronological order. And let's say I'll pull up this video. Let me make sure I hit pause here so you don't hear me talking. And this is going to show me where people start leaving my video. So you'll see I am 2 minutes and 10 seconds into my video and I still have 70% of people watching my video. Now what I could do is I can go to these dips and see what I'm doing. So if I click right here, I can see. Go down here and push play and see maybe what am I doing? Search. Maybe I stuck on this frame too long. But try to figure out why you're getting these dips in audience retention. Now, your goal is to hit 50% of audience retention at the end here. So the last 20 seconds, because that means they are seeing your suggested video and your subscribe button. So that's a really important number to look at and strive for. You can go in here and just make sure that you understand what your audience is not watching. So the next one you want to look at is traffic sources. So make sure you exit out. Otherwise you'll just be looking at the traffic sources for this video. So x that out. And then you'll go over here to your analytics and go to traffic sources again. This is for the last 90 days and you're going to see YouTube search, browse features, suggested videos, external and channel pages. You can go into each of these and play around with them. But the ones I'm going to show you are search and external. So by going into YouTube search, you're going to see the exact phrases people are searching to watch your videos. So they go onto YouTube and they search YouTube video ideas. They're watching my video and in the past 90 days, people who search that term watch my content 424 minutes. So this is going to give you some good content ideas. So time blocking is a video idea. I'm thinking about YouTube ideas, 2018 powersheets, how to write a video script, calendar blocking again. So these are all different ideas that people search and then ultimately watch one of my videos. Now if you want to go back and look at the external traffic sources, you'll go to this top level link and you'll go down to external. And this is how I determine what platform that I focused on. So the top five external sources bringing me traffic are Google, which means I'm obviously doing a good job of optimizing my videos because I'm showing up in Google search. So somebody finds my video on Google. And from that I'm getting over 7,000 minutes of watch time just from Google. There's my website. I embed my videos into my website. Every single video unknown is always probably going to show up. That's not a big deal. You won't know where that's coming from. But here were my big deciding factors when I was figuring out what platform to focus on. Pinterest and Facebook are bringing me traffic. Pinterest and Facebook are the platforms that I spend my time and my strategy on, whereas say ConvertKit or even Twitter. I don't know what that Pinterest is, but I also like to show sometimes Instagram is on there. But like Instagram isn't even in the top, what, 25, so. So it's not really bringing me a lot of traffic as it is. Well, linktree is. That could be coming from Instagram. You can also see if there's potential websites that have your videos linked into it. So. Savvytechtraining.com Megan Martin Vidpromomm I did collaboration videos with all of them, so they are also bringing me traffic. Now this is a really cool feature that's brand new and you got to click over to your YouTube Studio beta app. Now this is probably something that you want to get familiar with. YouTube is testing this as your new creator studio. Whether or not they decide to make you force you to come over here or not, I'm not sure. But what you can do is go to analytics here and one really interesting one is reach viewers. So what this number tells us again, this is in the last 28 days. So what this number tells us that in the past 28 days, my videos, my thumbnails came across people 187,000 times. So my videos had 187,000 impressions from that number. I had a 4.6% click through rate, meaning that's how effective my thumbnails are. So you can find out how effective your thumbnails are by this number right here. And if you click on this, this will tell you a little bit more about click through rates and it will tell you that an average click through rate can range between 2 to 10%. So I'm not doing horribly, but I could definitely increase that number. And I'm going to do a little bit of studying my thumbnails to see how to make that number bigger. This is how you can tell whether or not your thumbnails are being effective.
