Social Media Stopped Working, Here's What To Do Instead

In this presentation, Trena Little explains why relying on social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc.) is ineffective for business growth. She argues that these platforms operate in "entertainment mode," where users are not in a buying mindset, leading to low conversion despite high view counts. After quitting social media in 2025, she experienced her best business year, attributing the success to focusing on buyer‑intent channels such as Google, AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini), and especially YouTube. She contrasts the fleeting, pressure‑filled cycle of social media posting with the evergreen, compounding nature of YouTube content, which continues to attract discoverable, high‑intent traffic over time. Little highlights the rise of AI‑driven search, noting that AI tools surface expertise from long‑form YouTube videos rather than short reels. She introduces a "trust triangle" (searchable content, AI recommendation, and YouTube) and stresses that business owners need a niche, conversion‑focused YouTube strategy rather than chasing virality or subscriber counts. The core tactical framework is a playlist‑funnel system: weekly long‑form videos organized into playlists that guide viewers through education, trust building, and ultimately to email sign‑ups and sales. She provides a free training at treanalittle.com for implementing this system and urges entrepreneurs to shift their content effort from entertainment platforms to durable, buyer‑mode channels.

I quit all of social media in 2025. And that probably sounds wild because I have been in this online business space for over 10 years and when I tell you I've tried everything, I jumped on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope, TikTok. There are so many other ones that just don't even exist anymore. But here's what shocked me most. Looking back on 2025 after quitting social media, 2025 was my best year in business to date. Not just revenue wise, but mentally. The chaos was gone of trying to figure out what I needed to focus on. The overwhelm was gone because it wasn't constantly getting on social, seeing all these other things people are doing and that constant feeling of being behind, like I needed to post more, like I needed to do more because everybody else was doing more, was gone. Now this video isn't about quitting social media or telling you you should go delete all your apps right now. It's about realizing business owners aren't being told right now social media is the worst place to grow a business right now. Because people go to social media in entertainment mode, not buyer mode. Think about yourself when you're opening up Instagram, when you're opening up TikTok, you're not there to solve a problem. You're sitting in the school pickup line, you're watching soccer practice, you're trying to waste time by entertaining yourself. You're there to scroll. You're not there to solve a problem that you have other than being bored. Which means when you're creating content on those platforms, you're creating content for people who were never planning to buy from you in the first place. And this is why social media feels exhausting. You're posting more, you're trying harder, you're doing everything right. And still crickets or very slow momentum or maybe even no sales at all. Because when people are actually ready to buy, when they have a real problem and a credit card in their hand to solve that problem, they're not scrolling social media. They are searching Google. They are asking ChatGPT or Cloud or Gemini. They are watching YouTube videos. That is buyer mode, that is intent. When they go to Google or AI or YouTube, that's the moment decisions are getting made. Buying decisions. So if you currently feel like everything you're doing in your business is kind of chaotic and you don't know what to focus on first or you have all of these things, you're wondering what's the most thing, most important thing to focus on. And if you're feeling guilty that you're not posting enough. That's why you're not growing. That's why you're not getting more people watching your content while you're getting more sales, building your email list. And if you're tired of creating content that disappears after 24 hours, this isn't bad marketing. It's just you're building a content strategy in a place designed for entertainment, not discovery and buying. Because social media trains people to consume content casually. 5 seconds, 10 seconds, scroll. Like scroll again. Think about your own behavior on social media and there's nothing wrong with a good old doom scroll down TikTok. But it's the worst environment to help you grow your business, grow your audience for your business. Because as I mentioned, when somebody actually wants to solve their problem, who's ready to invest in a solution, they are not scrolling, they are searching. So I want you to think of it like this. You have the entertainment box, you have the buyer mode box and the entertainment Mode. You've got TikTok, Instagram, Facebook. People use those platforms by scrolling, getting a dopamine hit short attention. They're watching it really passively in the buyer mode. We've got Google, we've got ChatGPT, we've got YouTube. And this is where people are searching their specific problems. They are aware they have a problem, they have an intent to get their problem solved. And they are decision ready. Because if they can find somebody that can solve their problem fast, they're buying. So if you've been wondering, like you're posting content on social media and it's getting views, but you're not getting clients, you're not making sales, you're not even seeing people get on your email list. It's usually because your content is living in the entertainment box. This is why social media feels so hard to you. Because you're having to start at zero. Every day you wake up, your post expires. Every day, every day you wake up, you need to do it again. There is no compounding effect. There is no momentum on these social platforms unless you're posting every freaking day. What that really comes down to you is just the pressure. The pressure of what to post, the pressure to get the next post right, the pressure to get the next reel with more views on it. And that pressure shows up for you as guilt. Guilt you're not posting. Guilt for not keeping up, guilt for not doing what everybody says you should be doing. Let me know in the chat if you currently feel guilt around social media. Just comment. The word guilt so that you can see you're not the only one that is feeling this right now. If you look at this as a diagram, here's the cycle that you're currently in. You post, you try to get engagement and then your content disappears and you start all over again at posting. Trying to get engagement and then your content disappears. This is where most business owners are stuck. Here's what business gurus or business coaches aren't telling people. Growing your audience Growth in your business will not come from posting more, it comes from you being discoverable. If new people aren't finding you consistently, you will always feel like you're pushing uphill. Because social media is not built for discovery. As I said, it's built to entertain those people that open the apps, which is great for nurturing your audience and letting your audience get to know you, but it's not great for getting a new audience aware of who you even are. But YouTube is different. It is the only platform that you can be discovered by brand new people years after you've made a new video by someone actively looking for what you do, what problem your offer solves. What this looks like is when you post on social media, you immediately get a spike in views and then you immediately get no views, right? But when you post on YouTube, it's a slow simmer. You're consistently getting new views throughout time and it never stops. And this is what's allowing you to consistently get new leads, make sales, get new clients without needing to post every single day. This is what compounding looks like. This is what building a sales asset looks like in a business. What even matters more now in 2026 where we're at is AI. We are in this massive AI world right now. So people trust people less than ever before. And I'm not going to say trust recession, because everybody is saying this right now, but people just don't know who is real. They don't know who actually knows what they're talking about and who's just copying what AI is saying. They don't even know if the person they're actually following sometimes is a real person or if they're really an expert at all. But when you can do long form content like YouTube where you're potentially watching 10, 15 minutes of me, that solves that trust problem. And when you build a YouTube strategy the right way for business owners and not for YouTubers, you get people binge watching your content in a playlist funnel strategy. Because when somebody can watch you think, thinking, explain, teach and connect with you for those 10, 15, 20 minutes. Trust is built not in a 15 second reel. And nobody is talking about this part right here. AI chatgpt Gemini Perplexity does not recommend Instagram accounts. It does not crawl TikTok captions. AI will pull information and experts from YouTube content. And if you want to stay relevant in this new world, not just visibility, you need to exist where people are searching and where AI is going to go to recommend authority figures. You want to think of this as a trust triangle. Let's get real generic here. But you will build trust at the top of this triangle when you have content that's searchable in places people commonly go, like Google and AI and also YouTube. This is the triangle that you need to realize is going to keep you relevant and you need to make sure you're trusting the right people to teach you how to do YouTube as a business owner. And this is really important YouTube success for business owners, course creators, coaches, service providers, VIP day people. Success in is not reaching a hundred thousand subscribers. It is not trying to get millions of views on your channel. These numbers may sound impressive to anybody out there, but for somebody who Truly understands how YouTube works for business owners, for the main purpose of using YouTube to generate your leads, grow your email list, get sales gets clients, these numbers do nothing for you because they do not equate to sales. When YouTube gurus tell you I can get you to 100,000 subscribers, I would pause right there and back up. Because when you're creating a viral channel or a channel with 100,000 subscribers, you're going to be attracting the wrong people. You're going to be attracting DIY viewers, casual viewers, and you're not going to be attracting the people that will actually buy from you. Because small, niche, very specific content attracts buyers. When you are creating a strategy on YouTube for business, not for YouTubers for business, the goal is not virality, it is about being found by the right person at the right moment. In fact, I talk more about how going viral absolutely killed my channel and it was the worst thing that I did for my channel. You can watch that video next. But I'm telling you as a business owner, you do not want to listen to the people who are telling you I can help you go viral. That is the worst thing you can do. If we look at a viral channel, it is a broad topic channel, mostly people are watching this to DIY their problem themselves. They're not going to pay for their problem to be solved. It's an entertainment channel. People come to watch it with low intent. But when you create a niche channel, you're creating content that's for a very specific person at a very specific buyer journey. They are problem aware, they are buyer ready, so they're looking for very specific topics. And this is how you're going to make your sales from YouTube. This is why small channels outperform large channels financially. Every day I have a client who had less than 200 subscribers. She had a video that got 19 views and she made $15,000 from that one video. After 16 videos, again less than 200 subscribers on her channel, her videos getting anywhere between 50 to 100 views. A video had made $152,000 from a channel with less than 200 subscribers. So when somebody tells you they can get you to 100k or they tote that they are at 100k, that does not mean they understand the right YouTube strategy for business owners for conversion. This is why I teach business owners to use YouTube as a system, not a content platform. In fact, if you want to hear more about how I build a playlist funnel and what goes into the strategies that I teach my clients, I have a free training. You can totally jump into the next one. It's@treanalittle.com class. Like I said, I will show you the exact playlist funnel structure and what each video in this playlist funnel does. You can come for totally free, but you need to be thinking about your content on YouTube as pathways, as journeys, as lanes that gets people to binge, builds that trust and can see that the solution you're offering is exactly what they need. This is how you start to turn views into email list signups, into clients into core sales without needing to post every day. Because I recommend my clients. All you need is one video a week and that is how you escape that cycle, that hamster wheel of posting, engaging, expiring and starting all over. So if you're feeling right now that social media is exhausting, it's not a sign to try harder, harder. It's not a sign to buy another Instagram course. It's not a sign to dive into ChatGPT to find the best social media strategy or Instagram strategy TikTok strategy. It's a sign that you need to focus all that time you're spending on these entertainment platforms to a platform where your content lasts, where people are in buyer mode when they go to that platform. If you want an overview of how this system that I talk about works for business owners, watch the video that's on your screen right now because it walks you through everything you need to know about how YouTube is different for business owners than for YouTubers or influencers.
