Thing is, to be on video, you actually have to be seen. Hi, my name is Trina, and on this channel, I help creative entrepreneurs like you get on YouTube to grow your business. YouTube has been the number one platform for me to grow my business, and I love the power that video has for my brand. But the thing is, to be on video, you actually have to be seen. And for me, I never know what to wear. I'm a mom of two. I don't really like go to work. I work here at home. So having Megan on my channel today to walk us through the things we should not wear on camera are going to be very helpful for me, and I hope they help you as well. So take it away, Megan.
Hi, everyone. I am Megan Vanderbond of MVP Style. I am a personal stylist, and I just wanted to thank Trina so much for inviting me to to share some of these style tips with you. What not to wear on camera. This was a really fun project for me to put together because, frankly, there are so many things that don't really translate well to being shot on screen. So I'm going to kind of show you what I have in my closet that I love to wear, but that doesn't look great on camera. And maybe this will help you figure out a little bit more easily what you can wear when you're on film. So let's get started. I'm going to just go ahead and grab from my rack behind me. The very first thing is a dark color. This does not translate well on film. While this is a really great top and I love wearing it, it's just a big, solid blob of navy on screen. I love accessorizing when I am filming, but I don't think that you should just drown yourself in all dark colors. And this with long sleeves just makes it so that your whole body kind of fades into the darkness. This top is another navy option, but the reason I wanted to show this to you was because it has a really high neckline. And when you're filming, you want to keep your face and neck open. So a shirt that hits you at the collar or a slight V neck is a little bit better of an option than something that is a mock neck or a turtleneck that just makes you look like a floating head. So stay away from that. My next tip is, ladies, watch your undergarments underneath your tops when you're filming. And look how this is a really light color that just kind of blows out on film. You don't want to do this But I have kind of given myself a little reminder here. Look how this bra strap is showing. And this shirt has a see through quality to it. You definitely want to make sure when you look in the mirror before you film yourself that all of your undergarments are in place and that your top is. The next one is little stripes. This is an adorable top, but they make the camera go crazy. So this is definitely something to avoid. Even though it's a really great top to wear, you're not going to want to film yourself in it. Next up, I just have another dark shirt. This is like a dark green color. Again, it's just not doing anything for your face on film. You definitely want to be showing up in more of a jewel tone, like what I'm wearing today. This fuchsia top is a great choice and I paired it with a blazer because I think it gives me a more of a sense of authority. Maybe you'll agree, but I like how I've got this bright color on and I put on a light colored jacket over it to kind of tone down the brightness. But I don't think that there's anything wrong with just going for an all over bright color. Next up, just more dark colors that you think might work, but you really have to do a camera test to see. This could be beautiful, but it's not quite as good. See how close it is in color to the shirt that I'm wearing. But again, it just looks dark on film. And then the next step is black. You're going to want to avoid black and white. And then I wanted to show you something about fit that I think is really important to note. If you're the type of person who's going to look at yourself on film and be self conscious if you're not looking your best. I know that's most of us, but sometimes we just need a little response reminder about why maybe this wasn't the best choice. So look at this great top. This blue color is beautiful. I really like that it has a nice open neckline. I paired it with a small necklace just to bring a little bit of personality to it. But here's what is the problem with this top. I'm going to bring it over so that you can see a little bit more closely. It is very wide through the chest area and it's got sleeves that cut off right at like the widest part of your arm. And then it's very roomy through here. So this is not going to probably be the most figure flattering option for you. It's something that I would steer clear of unless you wanted to throw a jacket over it again for filming. I hope this helps. I'm really excited to bring to you my quick tips for looking better on camera. This is what not to wear and I hope that you have been inspired and seen something here that maybe you were doing and you weren't quite sure why it wasn't working for you and now you have an explanation and you know what to look for next time.
